Not hypocritical but logical, India, the worlds second largest steel producer is adding millions of tons of steel capacity annually since the country is gradually industrialising, Europe on the other hand have their own green agenda which India couldn’t care less about since we aim for at least 250 million tons a year in output by 2030. Maybe in 50 years we Indians will care about the environment, but now the focus is the economy and rightly so since we are a poor country.

@@sanjitbolina7481 We in the UK had to bow down to the clean air brigade and close our blast furnaces down, whilst in India you don't give a toss about clean air, so yes it is an irony and hypocritical.

@@3967742 I fail to see the irony/ hypocrisy in India’s desire to industrialise when the UK has had her industrial revolution. The UK has been deindustrialising for decades and that is a structural problem of the UK economy and the impact of globalisation. India in contrast is in a completely different stage of economic development, it’s akin to early to mid 19th century Britain, the country is gradually industrialising. Indeed what you’re saying is akin to me saying to some 19th century British company “why are they building a new steel works” That’s an absurd statement to make since they’re expanding because the UK is industrialising. Similarly today India is industrialising and thus there will be many more steel plants coal mines etc to meet the needs of industry and infrastructure development. Yes the environment is not our main concern, getting rid of poverty and economic development is the priority for at least the next 50 years. We don’t buy into Europe’s green politics because we can’t afford to, India is a poor country so our focus is industrial development and infrastructure build out. 2070 is our target for net zero when hopefully India at that stage will be a far wealthier country and thus can afford to take the path that you and the rest of Europe have embarked upon, to do so now when India is relatively underdeveloped will mean entrenching poverty for generations, again akin to me saying to 19th century Britain ‘stop your industrial revolution for the sake of the environment”

The workers should have just walked away and left the Indians to it. After all, that is where it is more than likely going to end up. Point in fact is Shepcote Lane, Sheffield which used to be BS Stainless. Decommissioned it and shipped the lot to India. Nice shiny big sheds there now. Only the EAF is left, I believe. I wouldn't hold my breath about seeing another EAF built in the UK ever again. Site will be cleared and big shiny sheds will go up to hold Amazon products. R.I.P British Industry.

UK iron ore is far too low in iron content and chemistry /phosphorus content to use in modern day steelmaking.. And coking coal has to be imported as opencast extraction is far less expensive than deep mined coal. Then you have the government imposed carbon levy. And as for the term 'green' steel... ridiculous misnomer.
@PhilipShakles2 ай бұрын
UK iron ore is far to lean in iron content and the cost of fuel for the blast furnace would make the steel hopelessly uneconomic in the market place. UK taxpayers cannot be expected to bankroll an uncompetitive industry through subsidies for ever and a day.

Got a query: is it true that the new electric furnaces cant produce certain alloys because of the EAF process?
@TataSteelUK2 ай бұрын
At the moment we could create around 90% of our portfolio by using EAF technology. The products you get out of an EAF depend on what you put into it, so the challenge is more around scrap management. This - and more - is discussed in our latest episodes of SteelCast, recorded at The UK Metals Expo.
