Just a tip mate when you replace the nozzle holder put a smear of silicone on the hose before fitting it will help with the seal, a lot of the problem comes from the screws that can just puncture through the hose & form a hole. I have had the media cut right through the hose & the plastic. But I do use Garnet, somewhat more aggressive on the equipment..
@Mobileblaster3 жыл бұрын
Yeah when changing the nozzle holders I normally use swafeega on the pipe on this job I swapped the full pipe for the spare on the van 😂 luck would have it I had a spare 40m pipe sitting in van. Very lucky that day or I would have had to cut and move holders not something I want to be doing with limited hand tools 😂

@mick when you have a blockage in your hose and it starts to whistle fold the hose while under pressure it shoots air back in the last pot 2 thinks happen one your hose is getting freed up and two the cone in your blast pot is getting dislodged as well and blast media will fall down and you start blasting again till your pot is empty
@Mobileblaster3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I try not to use this because I have a valve I can shut and open the grit at my finger tips this tungsten plunger smashes the clog and reopened under my control on my older pots this would work perfect but doing it with this is pushing air back past a 1 way valve under normal load. Also check my latest video on the green wagon towards the end watch my pipe bleb this is from doing just that 😂 What also works if you have another man drop the choke leaver when your blasting for 1 or 3 seconds this diverts more air into the pot pushing the crap down and out that's the most effective way but means paying another wage 😔
@ianinnes80633 жыл бұрын
What mediums are u using mick when i did blasting on the wagons etc i used like a metal filling compound it was disposable stuff . Came from machine shops . It wasnt bad stuff it had bn dried but u still got damper stuff amongst it from the cooling fluids used during the milling process it certainly took the crap of . But wore out nozzles quickly . It left a nice surface to paint . The first etch coats just dissapeared into the metal . Prefer power washing to the blasting hated wearing the helmet . . Love watchin ur vids . Just come across your vid Mick it brings back a lot of memories from when I used to sand blast stuff. I started after getting made redundant and my father in law had all the gear but had just been diagnosed with sarcoidosis of the lungs . ( being a farmer he always had bad lungs ! ) So he said I could have his gear and carry on . So started doing stuff on farm with old ingersoll rand vane type 175 cfm compressor and old swedish egg timer blast pot 😅 he'd been using sand straight from Rainfords sand winning plant on s'port coast so it'd rotted the inside of pot real bad. I was blasting an old trailer one day when I heard a big POP ! The bloody pot split in 2 😲😮 right round the mid section 😅🤣😂 Anyway I decidef to invest in a new robsons 2 bagger and carry on. THEN THE damn compressor started pushing oil through in air so that was that with that compressor too !! SO I shopped around and eventually found an atlas copco 250cfm with 600hrs on it so I did it up serviced it and changed tyres and brake cable and was back blasting. I really enjoyed it and bought new lines new air lines a secondary moisture capture pot and new gear (hodge clemco helmet @ppollo, and air breathing filter and new overalls and gaiters and a load of 1/2" nozzles, carbide ones. I found it very therapeutic and in a funny way calming. 🤔 wish I'd have carried on with it but no fun all that downtime in winter when weather was sh1t 😅🤣 I'll subscribe and keep watching bud 👍 oh and make sure your compressor is well up wind of your blasting amazing how quick you learn that one 😅🤣😅🤣 Steve. 👍
@Mobileblaster2 жыл бұрын

Hi Michael, new subscriber, silly question? Do you recycle any of the sand you use?
@Mobileblaster3 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question it could recycl but I tend to use the media 1x because once it hits it brakes up a small % so not a uniform finish not only that I once was 2 bags shy of finishing a job so I scooped some up. Well I spent the next 8 hour with the pot in bits trying to service a stuck bit of crud. Ever since that I only use fresh media just for the speed aspect and I know that the start of the job will end the same way (profile wise) thx for the sub its appreciated 💞

Gday mate, great channel. have a rip with an xl or a double Venturi nozzle at the bore size your compressor can handle. Maximises your air efficiency, bigger blast pattern and cleaner cut on hardcore corrosion/coatings like this. Less time on the hose means sooner you can knock off and get a cold one 🍻cheers Matt Hydra blast restorations
@Mobileblaster2 жыл бұрын
Thanks appreciate it 👌 I find the xl only added extra reach but I'm a very big fan of this style nosel just sometimes the length and extra kgs on the longer shifts I perfer to use a general clean nosel were I don't need the extra reach plus they only cost a fraction of the xl 😬 I find the double venture spreads the hotspot and in turn showing the cut I would only pick this style if light fast prep is needed along with the fan nosel similar effect.

bottom plates aren't generally cleaned or even painted / blacked. They are thicker so a little corrosion is less of an issue. They are far enough below the water that there is little oxygen to promote rusting, and in any case narrowboats regularly scrape the bottom so any coating would soon be compromised.

On a previous video you mentioned that you were not a fan of soda blasting. I had read soda blasting was good for boat hulls as you have a longer period of grace between blasting and painting without rust reappearing on the steal. I’d be grateful for your opinion/view just out of interest. I had my NB grit blasted 3 years ago prior to it having 2 pack epoxy applied.
@Mobileblaster3 жыл бұрын
Soda wouldn't bite through the rust scabs well possible it would but take a very long time and use a lot of media. Soda is very much like a fine paint removal kinda like taking paint off a can of coke without damage to the alloy prity much useless in my line of work. And time before paint totally depends on humidity could last weeks before paint could be hours soda will put a very slight extra lee time but nothing to right home about infact I don't fink anyone would notice its only what you know what it dose that would make you thing its giving more time if you get me? Soda on hulls possibly talking about fiberglass boats? Soda on steel huls would be very costly and not make a nice job like glass 👍

Richard, it can be painted either way. I did 35 years in Ship Repair and after they were blasted they were normally given an undercoat straight away. These days with the modern paint they often let it dry and spray straight on top of the plate. Painting Ships is now a highly technical process and the paint is expensive. A clean hull can save enormous amounts of money on fuel. I remember in the eighties when the complete hull of a Tanker had been blasted and painted. I was talking to the Ship Superintendent and asked him how it was cost effective. He told me they would gain one knot. Working out, 1 knot at 24 hours running, multiply it by 10 days, 240, multiply that by 100 days, 2400 extra nautical miles, think of the fuel saved in a year of running, 7200 extra nautical miles. Then go two or three years, it's amazing isn't it, all achieved by blasting and painting!

Hi. I'm watching couple of your clips. Got question. Why you don't use quartz sand for that job or other more abrassive media?? This will geave you faster work and problem with mild scale will be solved. I'm think glass for that job is waisting your time. I use glass only for aluminum and other soft material. For wood and brick etc I'm suggested use soda. Soda don't make that dirt. Btw. It's onlyy my suggestion. I'm blasting in Poland and we have different sandblasting standard 😁😁 All the best for you 👍👍👍👍

Sand is band hear in the UK due to the free sillica 😒 I use glass for the cheapness I know that j blast (copper slag) is good at removing milscale ornevwn steel shot but the cost involved my customers don't want to pay the extra involved also the glass washes out of the Dock easier than a hever grades so the pros are better than the cons with glass hence why I stick with it. As for milscale if it was so important to remove why is it on when I get to the boat? If they can release the boat with it still on why dose it then become my job to remove?

@@Mobileblaster First I'm hear about sand it's ban in UK. For me it's no point ban natural sand. I'm would say ban glass but not sand. Anyway abaut mild scale. Basically it's hard to remove mild scale on plate this take lot of time. Eaven remove with angle grinder it's slighty hard when you don't push hard to the material. It's lika a steel sheel. It's that beacouse steel is cold rolling. It's hard to explain. Remove mild scale it's basically long and costly process. And don't make this in shipyard when make narrow boat for one reason. Money. They put paint on the plate to reduce costs and time. Later people like you and me spend time and clean all crap plus mild scale to new paint coat but for correct material preparation. When I'm working in shipyard in UK we clean aluminum haul with angle grinder for better surface to paint. Without this paint just go after couple months beacouse surface is too shiny. An it's reason why in Poland we use sand. It's cheap and more effective. Some company use other abrasive but glass we use like I'm mentioned for aluminum cleaning mostly. Btw in Poland we charge 30 to 50££ per working hour or for square meter biggest jobs. Smaller its depense how time is cleaning. Most popular nozlle start from No 4 size for bigger jobs 10 or more 😁😁 Regards

@@marcinlisiak700 yeah I understand how milscale comes about but we need to ask ourselves why should we have to remove something that's on a boat that's been released from factory and they deem it to be acceptable so why then dose it become my problem to remove it? It's not my problem and I don't get involved trying haha sand has free sillica in and once its blasted and becomes airborne it becomes very dangerous to anything and anyone that breather air. Its been banned since the 60s in the UK not banned as a product but banned to blast with.

@@marcinlisiak700 nosel size is determined by the flow and psi you cannot just pick a bigger nosel because its a bigger job. To get optimal 100psi at the nosel you need to know the cfm and the flow rate of the pipes and distance of the pipe you plan on using to know what nosel you need. 😉 👌

@@Mobileblaster I'm blasting one year + 😁 When I'm work lika a welder in one company I'm make small construction and this what I'm make later I'm need sandblasting. Now in Poland I'm work two months like a sandblaster in company what they make LED mirrors. But don't invest for better compressor, sanding pot and want on me to use crap staff so i give awayaway and say good bye. Basically I'm still learn some things about sandblasting 😁😁😁 I'm wish have enough money to bay my own sandblasting setup but is expensive. New pot and compressor is at least in pounds something like 20+k ££ . Used compressor they start 1000 to 6000£ and new pot 1500 to 4000£.😁😁 Probably price is similar. Do you can use soda in your pot?? Or just only glass?? Beacouse for me on my knowledge it's doesn't matter what is in pot. Most important is working pressure is that right??

So it's hardly worth power washing my barge as soon as it come out of the water when the crud is soft if I'm gonna be sand blasting anyway, is this correct??thanks
@Mobileblaster2 жыл бұрын
Jet washing will help because it can stay wet for longer and water on fresh blast steel isn't good but not a major problem for me it makes no difference because the way I hit it I try to push it off into the damp areas but some blasters may not have the hindsight to think on
@derrickmurphy77292 жыл бұрын
@@Mobileblaster I was going to get barge lifted first maybe power washed then it would be a week later before it would be sand blasted primed and painted.what I mean is there would be no blasting done the day its lifted out of the water,so will I just leave it and let the sand do the work or power hose it as soon as its lifted. Thanks
@Mobileblaster2 жыл бұрын
@@derrickmurphy7729 yeah that moss stuff stays wet for a long time it will help to wash it and leave to dry or like ya say just save ya self some effort and let the blaster do the work it really don't make much difference. To be honest I like it as it makes for a better before and after photos haha

Would putting on more Zinc plates help...and could the anti rust plates be put on the inside
@Mobileblaster3 жыл бұрын
Duno I'm no scientist 😂 my personal thoughts they do were quicker than the steel but I'm yet to see a boat that's got less corrosion near the plates so I'm totally unsure if they actually work or do what they suppose to do. Every boat has them so I've yet to blast a boat without them I've seen em worn to a point the is nothing left but same again normal corrosion patterns so unsure
