Reviewing the Bambu Lab P1P that I bought late last year with their surprise announcement of this newest addition to the Bambu Lab X1 3D Printer Lineup
I originally bought 2 X1 Carbon Printers from their Kickstarter then preordered the P1P once it was announced. This machine definitely has its quirks but Speed & Print Quality aren't one of them. Honestly tempted to buy a 2nd P1P 😂

Pro Tip. Add an "Old" folder where your print files are, and move the files into that folder once they are printed. It keeps the active folder almost empty.

The fact is that below 5k no other printers in the market can achieve this level of part dimensional accuracy out of the box. That was a major advantage we saw when we got these printers. We printed our in house tests and all of them came out great. The X1 Prints the Taulman and 3Dxtech nylons so well that we haven’t had to use the markforged mark 2 for months now.

Most of the things are justified but some are just wild. I think you just got a bad printer. This is exactly what its supposed to be, a stripped down X1. All these people complaining about the screen, you guys want all the upgrades that the x1 has without paying for them. this is what you get for the price you pay! If you have a bigger budget and want all the upgrades, GET THE X1 it’s that simple. The whole purpose of this is to get people into a bambu printer, someone who wants speed and precision, and doesnt care about fancy screens and side panels, but doesnt have the budget for the x1.

I've had the P1P now for a few months. It's my 1st and only 3D printer. After a fairly quick learning curve getting it working properly I've had no issues with it. I have the light, fan and camera and installed (the camera sucks and no timelapse recording available but I've read it's coming). The WiFi has worked perfectly for me every time. The speed has toppled a few project and created a mess so I've had to use a brim more then the default to prevent it, but once I add a brim it works. I'm considering getting the AMS soon too. I'm glad I waited a little longer to purchase my 1st printer and very glad I choose this on.

I have both printers and I would say I’ve had most of the same experiences between the two. If you’re only printing PLA and PETG, as I mostly do, the P1P is wonderful and there isn’t anything really “bad” about it. But using the X1C is just nicer, quicker to transfer and start initiliazing. I have the P1P early bird fan, light and camera add-ons, but the camera is disappointing. I think the lag issues on the display and the camera lag on the app have to be related to whatever control board they are using, and that could be why it takes so much longer to unzip and process the models as well. I’d like to see a better, faster control board that boosts the performance of those things. I’m sure some of them can be tweaked or optimized by firmware updates to be improved, but if it’s a hardware limitation, it’s not going to be quite enough to match the X1C. I’m planning to do more printing for commercial purposes, and I’m still torn between buying more P1Ps or getting more X1CCs. I love the AMS but it’s not critical for commercial printing of single color items. From a purely dollar perspective, getting two P1Ps for the same price as one X1CC is a no brainer, as you can print almost double the amount in the same time going with two P1Ps. But the user experience of the X1CC and the ease of loading and changing filament on the AMS are so enjoyable, it’s making the decision harder:) Head-to-head comparisons printing full plates of identical print-in-place models, I have found better results with the X1C. That could be because of the better filament extrusion tweaking, first layer monitoring, or even just the enclosure of the X1C. Kind of ironically, the better results aren’t significant enough to justify the X1C cost, but like Uncle Jessy said, it’s the little things that just make the X1C more enjoyable to use. Regardless of which you buy, 3D printing is so much more enjoyable because of these printers, and I highly recommend them.

great write up. I have an x1cc w/AMS and need another to expand. Can't decide between p1p and x1cc + AMS, at double the cost its tough but like you said the conveniences add up. Plus if i stay on x1cc i dont have to carry spare parts for 2 different machines.

I am wondering if some of the transfer speeds etc have to do with the touch screen vs "90's radio" maybe some of the compute for that is done with the board running those. Not likely but thats the only real difference between the two that i can see.

@Uncle Jesse try a better SD card, you might find that suddenly the screen is a lot more responsive as a result. Especially when you have the camera installed. First of all, thank you for your update. I appreciate your viewpoint as a business owner selling goods manufactured with 3D printers. As a business owner too, I find it disconcerting that we would spend $700+ or $1500 and don't get any information on the motherboards and modules, except 'motion controllers = Dual-Core Cortex M4.' You buy a laptop at these price points and the hardware descriptions are the very first thing you see. So all I know is anecdotal evidence that the P1P does not have the same motherboard and wifi, that these are stripped down too. Even another "walled garden" company, Apple, shows specifications. The 'Right to Repair' is now law in some states and hopefully soon as national law. By this I mean we should expect full descriptions and layout diagrams.

I don’t mind WiFi, but I’d still prefer having an option for Ethernet instead. 3D printers typically sit in one spot, and I generally try to wire my stationary devices. I haven’t had any issues with my P1P’s wireless, but I do lack the ability to connect natively. For some reason, my network code option is just completely missing. The spot where it should be is just blank… not even a header title. I think the biggest thing that Bambu needs to work on for connectivity is the ability to intelligently circumvent cloud connectivity if you’re on the same network. All of my Ubiquiti gear does that if I’m on my home network and it’s much nicer avoiding the cloud.

Great Review. I have the X1C and love it. I truly wish all Printer companies would go to a USB drives. Resin printer companies seem to adopt but FDM haven't even started. Also I wish they would all have an actual network card not WIFI. Wifi has a ton of redundancy built into the protocols and I believe that is part of the reason that most of them suck at file transfer. Hard Wire doesn't have that issue. I think I will stick with the X1 for now. Unless they come out with a larger format version of the X1.

Well we can definitely relate to your P1P love/hate (for us love=85% / hate=15%). We have not had wifi connectivity issues but we do just end up saving the print files directly to the sd card which works so much better than sending the file wirelessly. The control panel...ugh. We had the same exact issues with it just not responding to presses and lagging so much. We discovered that if we disconnected the crappy camera and deleted all the video files, the lag went away. Whatever magic controller they're using with the P1P seems to be way underpowered and can't really handle video at all. We also wish it just came with the side panels. Obviously we can print them, but from day one these printers are running paid jobs 24/7 so we really don't have the time to print the panels. You are awesome, UJ, we very much appreciate your contributions to our community.

Been running the Anker Make and while they are constantly making firmware/app/desktop app changes (mostly) for the better, we are having a lot of frustrations with it. Considering switching to this printer here shortly. Although- the Anker make wireless print transfers/control is near flawless, very fast, responsive, camera seems to work well, AI functions are lame, though.

I agree that the control panel sucks on the p1p but making changes to the printer are easy with the Bambu handy app or the Bambu slicer. Also I almost wish I hadn’t put the aux fan on mine. Since 80% of the time I’m printing pla you don’t need the aux fan at all. The camera works on both mine but I almost never use it. I also didn’t waste time on the lights since my workshop is already so bright I don’t need it. Overall I wish I wouldn’t have waited to buy a Bambu labs printer. The ease of use, speed, and mostly the quality far outshines my other printers. For the first time since I’ve been printing I actually have idle printers from time to time which never happened before. Yeah there are a few minor annoyances, but the positives are way better then the negatives.

Great review! Funny though that at 11:30 mark in the video there are 2 audio files of you playing at the same time, one of them sounds like you talking in the video itself while filming and then your other audio is the voice over, dont know if it was intentional. But i've been thinking of purchasing the P1P to pair up with my X1C as the cheaper option for 1 material printing but the cloud print speed is my biggest concern if they will be able to improve that further as i love how fast the X1C is after i send the file, all in all i think i wait mabye 2 minutes and i'm in the live camera watching the print start.

You can get microSD to full-size SD adapters(bangood/ali etc) that are basically a SD dock with a microSD plug at the end of a ribbon.cable, making a housing for one of those and just gluing it on is quick and easy and makes a world of difference.... Have one that I got for my first printer which was a fiddly wanhao duplicator which has long since (thankfully) given up the ghost, once I get a P1P(within the next few months) I will be using that(full-size SD's are also often cheaper than the same size microSD's)

hey see you growing fast but I have a tip for making your screen run faster Find in slicer option named resolution under quality tab and set it to 0,05 - No need to thank ;P For curious people - CPU is struggling with PA, IS these are really demanding jobs + probably high microstepping rates makes it worse - cpu is lacking of power for gcode reading, anyway gcodes sliced in lower res such as 0,05mm are not problem in real life but that can make your life really better working with that printer, smaller files, less lines, more responsive printer

@UncleJessy, coming from an Ender 3 and wanting to upgrade I’m looking into the P1P. Is it worth it as a next step? I liked the price point over the X1C since the P1P just seems like a bare carbon and I feel like it’s getting a lot of firmware updates to keep pushing it better each time.

Your print time and order all show on the app. Use the app and some of these issues go away. The face place controls do stink however. Also, your inability to reprint is all in the app. Seriously, use the app. It will change how you interact with the P1P. Best FDM printer I have ever used.

@@kcaudle52 Apps don't automatically mean better. I don't need an app to get more control and information from my other printers. I have my doubts there. The P1P uses the same metal parts they already designed for the X1 and allows way cheaper mass production than ex. aluminium extrusions. Most other Chinese printer vendors have no history in that direction. Similarly the mechanism to make the moving parts light-weight enough for this fast movement isn't something other manufacturers will just be able to pick up. That said, this competition might cause Chinese manufacturers to focus more on somewhat decent Voron-like printers at competitive prices ... But I would not hold my breath if I were you ...
