Fun fact, the Menos Forest arc was intended to be in the manga originally, but Tite Kubo had to cut it for pacing issues, in the Viz Media releases of the manga he put in concept designs for Ashido and the Adjuchas

Thing is Ashido (the hollow slayer guy at the beginning) is technically canon. He was originally set to appear in the manga during the same part in the series, but had to be cut by Kubo due to time constraints. So really Kubo added him in the anime where he couldn't in the manga making him pretty much canon.
