Wow. I love this! The most comprehensive rigging video I've seen! Bypassing the weightpainting is super clever. I'm going to put this to good use. Merci! Subbed and faved.

thanks for this this and the insect walk cycle tutorial man. came very handy to me, because all other rigging / walk cycles tutorial was for bipeds or 4 legged animals. Keep up the good job.

Not sure if you are aware but your tutoring skills are excellent! Also helps a LOT that you have the keyboard/mouse clicks displayed in the recording! Subscribed and hope for more content like this, hopefully more blender->unity :)

Thank you for this! Great teacher and tutorial. At timestamp 31:13 when you grab the bones and move the whole bug without moving the legs. I'm not understanding how you did that. Did you add a constraint to those bones. My dragonfly goes crazy when I do that. Cheers! thanks again. Morgan

Nice tut, thanks. Interesting technique with extra bones rather than having to correct weights - never seen anyone do that before, but makes perfect sense. When parenting armature to mesh, you mentioned to ensure to 'apply' the transforms - which makes sense - but was wondering if you are sure about the "location" transform, as often that's not needed to be applied as it resets object origin (I'm thinking in terms of having multiple things in scene and all can't be at origin) - does it need to be at origin for the parenting? If so, how do you handle when you already have a bunch of other objects in the scene?

You should specify that adding more bones is not recommend if it is going to be exported in a game engine.

I came to the comment section to say the same thing. I think he added a lot of bones to take care of the extra weight painting work for him. With a hardshell creature like this, the extra bones will play no role in the actual animating work, unless the insect is crushed or something.

Not trying to be rude, and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you probably have learned better since this video, but this is a bad way to rig something like a beetle. First, one bone per one solid moving part, that means one bon for the head, one for the thorax, one for the abdomen (unless you want to do some abdomen flexing animation), one bone for each mandible, etc. You are putting way too many bones and over complicating things for a workaround that you don't need to do. Beetles are hard in most areas, that means for a leg segment for example, you would select in edit mode just that leg segment and create a vertex group, then go to the bone for that segment and in the setting just choose the whole vertex group for that bone to weight to, now you don't have the unwanted extra weighting and its much faster. Secondly, unlock the upper leg bone from the root or thorax bone, and have its origin where the leg starts from the body, you don't need a bone in between connecting to the thorax bone, the upper leg bone will just be parented to the thorax bone and you'll see a dotted line denoting it.

cheers, its rigging that is stopping my complete change from ZBrush/3dcoat/Maya L to ZBrush/3DCoat/Blender for assets.
@kullenberg5 жыл бұрын
Just curious, what does 3dcoat have that zbrush and blender/maya does not?
@sqwert6545 жыл бұрын
@@kullenberg I got coat for retopo mainly and 3DMouse works with it. Watched a lot of twitch game dev channel starting 4 years ago to learn . Chat was useful, meet nice people and chat whilst they work. Useful for everyone. Coat is useful as it uses voxels in some cases. Moving to Blender/Zbrush as much as possible now. Maya only useful for speed rigging now for me. Need to learn to rig in Blender. Also learning Houdini, the procedural workflow saves time. There is a free Apprentice version that is the full version for learning. Houdini is the future, mostly widely used for film making. Zbrush 2020 auto retopo is so good now it saves most of the hand retopo, its 90% as good as I can get it for stuff like the cow. And saves a few hours of work
