Blender 2.81 Tutorial -- Cloth Bed Sheet

Hello internets! Here is a beginner Blender 2.81 tutorial for creating a bed sheet, using Blender's cloth simulation physics system.
This is a beginner level tutorial, albeit assuming you have a basic knowledge of Blender's shortcut keys, etc.
PS. Forgive the baking taking forever. You can just hit play/space to run simulation, and stop where you want. I learned to bake, and pass it on to you. It has its pros and cons. Just run the sim live and stop where you want. Cheers!

the difference between guru and him is guru's videos account for you being slow at following the steps because you may be new to blender and so on, i myself find me stoping and rewinding for most blender content creators. With Michael if made it slightly slower , maybe 25-30 minute videos then his audience would widen up because he would make simple things step by step a lot slower thus catering to the wider community of new comers and intermediate modelers. Like i speak for myself when i say i could not watch Michael on my first day or 2 of blender experience. i hat to go do the donut with guru to learn that basic stuff. So what Michael needs to do is design some projects that would take the " idk wtf im doing in blender" guy and put him through a mini course... like guru's donut series. something on that style to cater to the guy learning the ui all the way to basic shading and stuff. Doesn't have to be the primordial donut, just something like it

Hey Thanks! ;) That's really odd. Smooth shading should fix that. And if your SbD is enough, with the smooth shade, definitely shouldn't be polygonal. Try it with another SbD plane that isn't cloth or anything.

I'm using it on a model im doing my self and the mattress and base of the bed have collision. I set everything up the same, but when i bake it and play it the Bedsheet just crumples toward center the flys away. Any tips on why its just crumpling in and crawling away instead of just falling?

That's because your subdivision are too close to each other. You should reduce the distance on the self collision section

Ya, the cloth brush could have been used here, but I wanted to keep it simple and under 10 min. It's one of my first early vids. Believe it or not, I edit as well, just didn't do any for this first tutorial. Thanks man!

Thank you for the tutorial. When my blanket falls on the matress it works but there is a gap between the blanket and matress if i get close with my camera, is there a setting to get rid of the gap?

Yes, it's collision distance--the cloth will be default distance 0.015 m. You'll want to change this to 0.010 or less. The lower you go, the closer it will be, but at some point it might become unstable. Find a good number. Also, make sure self collision is on, with a good distance too. Also, if things slip, up the friction to 15 or 20. Good luck.

Make sure you are done with your simulation with your pillow. Then freeze that...convert to mesh or whatever it is. Then make that pillow mesh a collider. Then do your blanket/cloth sim.

Hey thanks for the question--I would first make sure the mattress has a collision on it. Next I would make sure the object collision distance is lower than the default (0.015) and try setting this to 0.001 or something. You can also increase the quality of collision from 2 up to 3 or something. Good luck!

Hmm. It's just a plane correct? You chose 'cotton' from the presets I showed ya? Gravity and world scale are normal? You could add thickness (by making a super thin box, or using solidify on a plane), but we just went with a plane for this tutorial.

Make sure that when you have proportional editing on, and you begin your scale or move, that you mouse wheel up and down to see the circle of influence...that circle sometimes is so big it's off camera, or it may be tiny. Roll up and down to find it. Also, you can choose in the proportional options to manipulate 'connected' or not...try that sometimes if you don't want to manipulate nearby mesh. Cheers!

That sounds very odd. Since this setup is very quick and easy, I'd say start from scratch. If you follow the tutorial, this really should not happen. Good luck.

@@Glowbox3D I checked the world scale and field weights, everything was normal. I did, however, find a setting I can work with. I adjusted the Friction to 4. Distance to 0.1m and impulse clamping to .1. It's still going through a bit, but at least it's something I can work with. Thanks again for this video!

Try decreasing distance in the self collision tab. It worked for me by decreasing the default distance of .015m to .0015m. Hopefully this helps anyone that comes across this problem.

Hello Maddie! Not if you followed the tutorial step by step...then I have no idea why it does nothing. Make sure your plane is set to cloth first of all...if it is, and you hit play (space bar or bake), it should react to gravity and fall at least.

Hmm. You have collision on your mattress? Your sheet is set up just like I did? As a test, do everything I did, except just before you subdivide, add a solidify to the plane/sheet. Make it super thin. Then subdivide and turn it into a cloth and continue. Good luck.

Hmm, the object is set to not-render? It should not collide with any object that isn't set to collision. Why do you have an invisible object set to collision? That could yield cool results, but if it's not what you want, just make sure said object isn't a collision.

Make sure you have 'self collisions' on for the cloth object, and on the collision object it self, maybe UN-tic the 'single sided' setting in 'soft body & cloth.' Good luck.
