There aren't very many tutorials that go into digitigrade type legs, so I thought it was important to have this tutorial for those of you who need it -

The bit about digitigrade legs going forward first is important. Digitigrade animals have the same high-level leg bone structure as humans: thigh, calf, foot, toes. The difference is that their thigh bones tend to be relatively short and their foot bones relatively long, and they walk on their toes (their _digits,_ hence the name) rather than their feet. What appears to be "a backwards knee" is in fact their ankle.

My ex loved Louboutins and would occasionally walk around the apartment barefoot on her tippytoes. This made her look like a raptor in my head. Now I know why. Humans walking on their toes make them digitigrade walkers!

i always get aggrovated when characters who clearly are supposed to have digitigrade legs are constructed in a way that they have two heels; walking plantigrade but also having a "dog heel" off the ground lol

to add onto that pivot control, you can make it pivot on the heel with some more parenting, constraints, and control bones. 1. directly after making the first pivot at the toe, and parenting the toe bone to it, create another bone with the origin at the heel pivot point. 1.1 Select the foot bone first, then the ik bone and CTRL+SHIFT+C+T to add a copy transforms constraint (the ik should already be aligned with the foot bone). 2. parent the toe pivot to the heel pivot. 3. create a master pivot control bone. 4. select the master first then one of the pivots, then press CTRL+SHIFT+C+R to add a copy rotation from the master to the pivot bone, and change it from local space to local space. repeat for the other bone. 5. Again for both bones, CTRL+SHIFT+C and add a limit rotation constraint, then fiddle with how far each bone should go by first checking it yourself by just rotating it. 5.1 if your bones are going in weird directions, it's at this point i reccomend aligning the bones in this mechanism to the world axes and resetting their roll ALT+R in edit mode. 6. when youre happy with your limit rotations, create a big master ik bone, and parent the ik target bone, the heel pivot, and the master pivot to the master ik. this allows you to control the whole foot's position again. 7. add a copy rotation from the toe pivot to the toe bone and invert the proper axis, usually X, local to local, and select offset. now the toe should follow the rotation properly. 8. send the ik target, foot bone, toe pivot, and heel pivot to a separate layer , since you wont be animating them. enjoy your toe and heel pivoting! dont forget in edit mode to SHIFT+W turn off deform or in bone properties uncheck deform for the bones that arent deforming it, so Blrenmdber doesnt export those bones.

I didn't even know how those were called, so you can imagine the struggle I faced when trying to learn how to rig animals! awesome and straight to the point as usual :)

One of the biggest hurdles to learning is terminology. Not knowing the right words is enough to keep you back from the tiniest discoveries that would help enormously.

i was actually watching one of your tutorial playlists for rigging in unreal and i thought damn that looks easy but then realised i need digitagrade legs, so search google found the top video and bam, im back with you. looks like uve covered every corner haha. but i do want to use the unreal rig to steal all its animations, can i just do some back and forth i,port export and then once i have the animations start changing things like this and keep the animations applied to the new skeleton mechanics or would this screw up the animations?

I've found the first joint in digitigrade legs like this don't like to rotate much. The IK seems to load a lot of the rotation on the joint closest to the target, leaving the later joints more for once the leg is more compressed/stretched.

Do you have a video for exporting FBX from unity and importing it into blender? Having a hard time getting models to import correctly into blender from unity.
