I think Twilight was actually in character this episode, as strange as it sounds. We've seen it before with Discord after he was 'reformed' and even with Sunset Shimmer at first in Rainbow Rocks when she hesitated to take her hand (even if it's not officially canon), Twilight has trouble letting go of the past when it comes to characters that have wronged her and her friends. I like this because even though this forwards Starlight and Trixie's character development it also gives us even more depth on Twilight; a character we thought we already knew everything about. The duality of growth between Twilight and Starlight is really fascinating and I can't wait to see more.

Teleportation seems to be a very high level spell. Trixie was very reckless, but the manticore seems to be friendly so I guess it would vomit her up.

This gives me a lot of insight into how Starlight ended up the way she did. She's a control freak on the same scale as Twilight, but unlike Twilight, seems to have almost no restraint. As soon as a thought pops into her head, she just throws magic around... regardless of how disruptive or invasive, with no further consideration as to anypony else's feelings on the matter. With her prodigious magic skill, there are few problems she can't instantly 'solve', and when she does come up against a problem she can't instantly solve, she gets really frustrated really quickly. Seeing this, it's easy to see how she how she got into the brainwashing buisness. It was so much easier for her to get along with others when they didn't have their own thoughts and opinions getting in the way of her ongoing life management.

+funcoolfunfun Time for another comment chain? I disagree completely. This is probably my least favorite episode of the season as of now. I mean, Starlight and Trixie were both very well-done and if it was just this, the episode would've been the best for me too. But the story/writing is so goddamn stupid in places that it brings the whole episode way down for me. - why is Twilight such an absolute idiot? How the hell is she the princess of friendship if she sucks so much at it? This is a whole new level beyond "hooffields and mccolts" or the yaks or the premiere. - what sense does a unicorn stage magician even make? I assumed their shows in this universe were based around being flashy and original/funny and something, but a whole super-fantastic magic trick, the ultimate magic trick of all time, is done with simple fucking teleportation? Who would ever be surprised by a unicorn appearing in another spot in Equestria? And Trixie doesn't even try to hide that Starlight helped her, not even from the crowd. And Twilight says she couldn't have done that trick? What? - why was Trixie still intending to perform the trick after she learned about Starlight's dinner? I don't believe the "suicide" idea for a second, and anyone who thinks that's what writers intended are being silly IMO. She behaved like she was obligated to do it: clearly afraid of the manticore, hoping Starlight would save her anyways. As soon as Starlight suggested helping, it's as if Trixie added that trick to her show without being able to remove it, even though in the span of five minutes it was revealed Starlight might've not been able to make it. - hell, why is Fluttershy afraid of the manticore? Minor among other things but also really annoying. These plotholes or whatever you call them completely ruin the episode for me.

Antroid Twilight's the princess of friendship because she's good at it overall. She tends to fail when she actually tries teaching it. It's the "Kung Fu Panda" effect. When she doesn't deliberately try teaching frienship, she's great at it. Considering that Equestrians seem to react differently than we would, it does at least make sense that unicorn stage magicians exist. As for the next two things, I just draw upon the MST3K mantra: "It's just a show, I really should relax". In regards to Twilight saying she couldn't have done it, I think she means that she wouldn't have been able to work up the courage to shoot herself out of a cannon and into a monster's mouth. There are two ways to look at it: 1. She WAS trying to commit suicide, and given her tone and just overall behavior, it would make sense. 2. She DID feel obligated to go through with it, and was hoping she could improvise/ Either one is plausible, but if 1 was the case, then there's only one thing to say: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: a FAMILY show. Fluttershy wasn't necessarily afraid OF the manticore, but she was afraid FOR Trixie's safety.

+funcoolfunfun Well, I suppose, if there's a flying team that just.... flies and are celebrities about it, a unicorn magic show would also make SOME sense. I'll give you that. Though earth ponies are getting shafted again. Unless rodeos are their variant of this?.. I'll also give you the kung fu panda effect, though I've never seen those, I can understand that teaching is a lot different from learning, but the point of a princess of friendship was to spread friendship, which she sucks at, not to make friends (which she is alright at I suppose, still worse than Pinkie though). I find it hard to believe that after all she's been through Twilight would not have the courage to do something Trixie does. But this is a fairly minor thing. I simply can't accept any explanation for Trixie doing the trick without Starlight's help, though. First of all, nothing about her tone and behavior makes it seem like she's attempting suicide. As I said, she is obviously and openly afraid of the manticore and also praying to Starlight. Even if she could expect Starlight to save her life whether or not she considered her a friend, she saw Starlight run away, so she coudn't rely on her either. And as for feeling obligated, that makes no sense either, because she seems as if she was contractually bound into doing it the second Starlight agreed. A minute later Starlight mentions the dinner and Trixie already goes "welp I'll just have to do it alone then, I hope I survive!". I could see that being emotional manipulation, but that would not explain the show itself, when there was noone to manipulate. Just, not a single explanation for why Trixie felt the need to go through with the trick makes any sense to me. And as a final note, Fluttershy was afraid before Trixie mentioned going into the manticore's mouth. You could say she guessed that the presense of a manticore on stage put Trixie in danger anyways, but that seems farfetched. But whatever, this is minor compared to the main point, with the trick itself.

Antroid I'm pretty sure rodeos ARE their variant of this. Though that would be interesting to see an earth pony magician... To be fair, she hasn't had many opportunities to actually spread friendship, though she has succeeded at it before. On a side note, you should see the Kung Fu Panda movies. They're great. Considering that Twilight was also afraid of Starlight (at least for a bit) in "The Cutie Re-Mark", it would make sense. This might come down to a difference of interpretation, but given how monotone (by her standards at least) she was speaking when she was introducing the trick to the crowd, it seemed like she was pretty depressed, to the point where she'd be willing to commit suicide. For feeling obligated, it was a sense of obligation to herself to do it. Lastly, sure, it might seem farfetched, but the same could be said for a ton of things in the show. Despite your points, you at least have to admit that the comedy in the episode was great.

+funcoolfunfun Comedy was great, that's true. Really, for the most part the episode was great. I guess the part that many people choose to see as a suicide attempt is just stupid enough to bring it down. I did think the monotone introduction and its wording were very scary coming from Trixie (scary as in making me scared FOR her, kinda like you say Fluttershy was, heh). But it's a far cry from suicidal IMO. Even if it looks plausible (you could make the argument that Trixie became truly afraid after being shot from the cannon, much like some jumpers instantly regret jumping right after they do so), I can't believe that the writers would ever intend that. Plus, if it WAS intended, it opens up a whole other can of worms with how nonchalantly Twilight and Starlight were watching Trixie almost kill herself and how neither of them rushed to her side with panicked WTFing as someone would a suicide survivor. As for kung fu pandas, sadly it's just not my cup of tea. I highly dislike 3d animated cartoons, apart from Toy Story. And I've also lost all ability to care for a story and characters during a single, two-hour long piece of storytelling. When I was a kid I would worry for the characters, fear the villains, hope for a good outcome, be amazed by a fantastic setting or just immersed into the atmosphere, but these days I can't bring myself to care most of the time. Same with movies, too.

This was definitely a very well written episode. I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad they're being more freeflowing, meaning how they have DJPon and Derpy, along with having these meetings with the princesses. It just makes it feel like there's more happening in equestria. On another note, great commentary as always! I enjoyed it.

The reason for Celestia and Luna's hair being the way it is: Young Celestia originally had pink hair, and young Luna originally had blue hair. After Luna turned into Nightmare Moon, her hair transformed to look like the night. As did Celestia's hair, to look like a rainbow, as a result of when she wielded all the elements on her own to defeat Luna. Luna's hair continuing to look like the night can be seen as a sort of remnant of nightmare moon that will always be with her, seeing as she IS Nightmare Moon. She is both Luna, and Nightmare Moon, and therefore, a part of Nightmare Moon will always linger with Luna. As is the same story with Celestia. She wielded all the elements, and therefore, the element's power are now a part of her.

It's interesting how things have been changing these past few seasons...Season 4 added a whole lot of new ideas, and premises for the show...Well season 5 was a mix of refining those premises, and ideas further. As well as improving upon the animation, and overall stylistic feel for the show... That's not even mentioning the fact that they were testing out ways to structure the show for the future (Better script, better stories, and more slice of life.)!This newest season however, has shown a further refinement for the show, and in some ways, they are still trying to find the "recipe" to making a good episode that balances the fantasy, and slice of life elemants. I hope to see them continue this pattern, and make the show really awesome for the future! And, sure ... we might not have too many more seasons, but at least we can feel at ease, knowing the show is only going to get better! *knock on wood*

One of my new favorite episodes in the show, and tied for my favorite of the season with Gauntlet of Fire. This episode started with a great bit of humor with Twilight suggesting Starlight go make some new friends, and Starlight cracking a joke about maybe she should enslave all Ponyville to do so. Just from her voice, you could tell she was kidding, and it was glorious. However she makes a friends and behold the return of the Great and Powerful Trixie! I love the gags of her trying to make new friends, ESPECIALLY the bit with Miss Cake! That was genius! I love the bit about Starlight having never heard of the Wonderbolts, and Dash's reaction! "YOU NEVER HEARD OF THE WONDERBOLTS?!?! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!?!" "I guess enslaving villages...hehe..." I love the bit with her and Trixie at the spa, and how Trixie hates that no one is giving her a second chance. She comes off as very genuine, and sincere. Also, I like how Twilight is learning to be a teacher. She has a good point about being worried about Starlight's past and Trixie's past causing both to go evil again. It is Twi being paranoid, but for good reason. Twi fucks up their friendship......and....Trixie actually CRIES...about how her heart is breaking into a thousand pieces. Twi was selfish and overprotective of Starlight, but she regretted it after she saw how she had hurt Trixie and Starlight. She fixes it...after Trixie.....seemingly tries to attempt suicide during her magic show I might be interpreting the Manticore scene wrong, but did anyone else get a feel that Trixie was trying to commit suicide after losing Starlight? If that was the intent the writers had....they did a VERY good job pulling of an attempted suicide in the show. No jokes, it being played strait, and in a context that works well.First I congratulate them on having the balls to even have a character attempt suicide, and 2nd..it was so well done! Trixie had finally made a friend, and after losing her she felt like she would never be able to do it again is how I saw the scene....if this was the intent, kudos writers, you tackled attempted suicide with tact and grace, and did so well in a context that works! Of course it fails and she and Starlight are friends again. But damn...this was an amazing episode.

Twilight really seemed off in this episode. She seemed perfectly okay with Trixie by the end of Magic Duel, and then suddenly decides to distrust her again. Not only that, but it seems that she has completely forgotten this friendship lesson from "Gryphon the Brush-Off": "Today I learned it's hard to accept when somepony you like wants to spend time with somepony else who's not so nice. Though it's impossible to control who your friends hang out with, it is possible to control your own behavior. Just continue to be a good friend. In the end, the difference between a false friend and one who is true will surely come to light." Twilight might as well have just set that letter on fire.

+Curly Q Also consider that Celestia is involved in the situation. As we've seen multiple times now, rationality has a habit of leaving Twilight entirely when Celestia is in the picture. How she was stressing so much over silverware placement of all things I would say is a pretty good indicator she's probably really set on making sure this dinner goes perfectly and I can see where that would lead to her doing things against her better judgement just in an effort to control it.

+Misty Demorrow past episodes say that they rarely have free time so i imagine that she cleared some time to have this dinner and the fact that they spent time waiting for Starlight and at the end when they didn´t return implies that her schudle was ruined and after returning to Canterlot she will be unecesarilly busy.

Celestia has known Twilight since she was a filly so I am sure she can see through anything Twilight tries to pull. Honestly Celestia this season has been used better than in the past few seasons.

Now this was an awesome episode and commentary!😃 From the past several days, I've been thinking of potential characters that I'd like to make a comeback(mainly the ones that we haven't seen in a while) like Babs Seed, Daring Do even Trixie. And low and behold, Trixie returns with flying colors and the result: the biggest smile on my face(Lol)!! I have a feeling S6 just might be as great as seasons 4 and 5, but we'll see. BTW, Trixie debuts in S1 episode 6 and returns in S6 episode 6, that's cool!

Honestly I feel like Twilight was very in character this episode. She said she forgave Trixie but it's easy to say you forgive someone. Also she has shown trouble forgiving a villain before, like in Rainbow Rocks when Twilight was hesitant to take Sunset's hand even after they made up. Also in Rainbow Rocks Trixie almost ruined her life again by trapping her under the stage while not pony Trixie it still may have opened some wounds.

THE RETURN OF THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE!!!!!!! i loved this episode, i will say i was afraid that Trixie was using Starlight the whole time and end up being the bad pony again, but she truly did want to be friends with Starlight and that makes me happy, this was nice, i didnt think i would love anything like Gift Of The Maud Pie, this wil be one of my favorites thats for sure. this was a great reaction vid RarityDash, i am glad you enjoyed it, please keep up the great work man, BroHoof (\ and before i leave i have to do this...
