"What happened there?" Ash wasn't startled to be approached by Eiji despite having just stated earlier he doesn't like being approached from behind, and being clearly vary of other people.

The fabled episode 9… ugh.. pulls at my heart strings every time. Heres some interesting stuff to know: In episode 7, the reason Yut-Lung gasps after seeing Eiji appear behind Ash is because just previously Ash explained he doesnt like being approached from behind: (you can see this because he turns around to face Yut-Lung.) However, mere moments later Eiji comes in and Ash allows him to get close to his face regardless. Also, with Shorter, theres a manga origin story for how they meet. Its hinted that Shorter loved Ash, but didn’t pursue the relationship out of respect for him. So.. him protecting Eiji is even more heart breaking. Seeing the angel for Shorter also has this connection with Ash; as if he sees him as a higher being who can end his life.

Another vote for reading the Manga Origin story of how Shorter and Ash met! Some of the imagery used in ep 9 hits a lot harder with the context of their past interaction, it's a great read!

In terms of the joke about them not realizing they made it to LA, I think it's precisely because they only had a map (and were a truckful of guys who weren't necessarily great with directions). I did a lot of roadtrips as a child in the 90s, and there's definitely an element to reading maps that requires understanding the distances. Generally, you'll take breaks here and there, and you can miss road signs, and travel can take far longer than you'd think. They could've taken a wrong exit off of the interstate, but it's also possible they took the right exit and then got lost because of the unfamiliar neighbourhood and second guessed themselves. That sense of "oh, we're actually here" was always most prevalent to me when I was anticipating a place would look like something, but the outskirts are nothing like the downtown (which is generally what you picture of a city you've only heard about). In this case, they were "in L.A." while still being in the outskirts of the city, and feeling lost probably because they were on track to their goal but it wasn't what they were expecting it to look like. If you don't have confidence in your map-reading skills, it's easy to think you've made a wrong turn somewhere. That's my read on that joke anyways.
