Sugarbelle's little snort laugh is adorable. Reminds me of my first girlfriend who would snort whenever she let out a laugh(much like Sugarbelle). She hated it, but I found it adorable. The best part was I always knew when I was sincerely making her laugh(because she wouldn't ever snort when using polite/forced laughter). Also it seemed like Spike was hinting at a Fluttershy/Discord ship.

Sitcom tropes of misunderstandings and misinterpretations aside, this was a really sweet and sad episode, full of plenty of ups and downs, but ending on quite a few ups. I really am glad that Big Mac and Sugar Belle didn't truly break up, because they're an adorable couple. Seeing the 'break up' scene and its effect on Sugar really hurt, but seeing them reconcile and clear up the misunderstanding was very sweet. Who woulda guessed Spike's 'wacky cousin' theory would be right? XD But now, she's living in Ponyville to apprentice with Mrs. Cake! She's gonna be closer to her beloved now! =D As someone whose life was changed because of Fluttershy's willingness to show him friendship, Discord's the last creature who ought to be dissing love. It's not just about the romantic, but also about the platonic, and he gets plenty of that from his butter-yellow bestie. Still, even if he did have an ulterior motive in wanting to help Mac just to play some O&O, he does have his heart in the right place. Doesn't excuse his playing 'Shoulder Devil' and convincing Mac to break up with Sugar Belle, but it's very telling that even he was shocked when Mac lashed out at Sweetie Belle. The fact that he made it possible for Mac and Sugar to clear things up...The big softy. =) As for the Crusaders, it looks like they've reached that age where they start wondering when they're gonna find a special pony for their Hearts and Hooves Days. I know the feeling, believe me, but with Sweetie Belle deciding at the end that she doesn't need a special somepony when she's got her best friends, that really warms the heart, and it's a lesson I ought to take to heart as well. Also, I agree with you that they missed an opportunity to bring back Tender Taps, but including Button Mash was very clever. XD It was also sweet seeing all those other couples out during Hearts and Hooves Day: Lyra and Bon Bon (could be interpreted as either a couple or really good friends, works both ways), Maud and Mud Briar, Twiggy and Boulder, and Cranky and Matilda. Love was definitely in the air.

As far as Spike's "advice" goes, I kinda agree with DWK's observation that the "Common Sense" switch is typically either set in the Spike position or the Twilight position. At around 35:00 , I would disagree with that assumption i think. People break up/dump each other for a myriad of reasons besides wanting nothing to do with one another, like for example they'd prefer to be friends or acquaintances and the romantic aspect isn't working, so there is nothing farfetched in sugar belle's statement.

Overall, this was a surprisingly brilliant episode. It just goes to show that a story doesn't need to feature any of the Mane 7 to be successful. Discord, Sugar Belle and the CMCs were enough of a treat, but cameos from Mail Mare Derpy, Button Mash, and Maud and Mud Briar? Let's just say I got more from this episode than I was expecting. A lot more. Will the next episode have big surprises too? We'll just have to wait and see.

One of the few episodes that doesn't have any of the mane 7(?) in it at all. BUT we get Big Mac talking in return. As the season 5 villain Starlight Glimmer would say: "sounds like a fair trade to me!"
