As for how realistic it is for four kids to invade the royal palace, consider two things: 1) An aerial attack was unexpected, allowing the gaang to skip a lot of the palace's defenses and catch them by surprise 2) Royal guards would not have seen much actual fighting, giving the gaang more battle experience

Not to mention that the guards are dealing with not one, not two, but THREE MASTER BENDERS, and they're kids too, which goes to reason that they're prodigious, not to mention that one of those masters is the freaking AVATAR. And in their world, there is only one remaining sky bison and they do not use planes, so an aerial attack is quite advantageous and they're not prepared for.

I'm surprised they don't like Ty Lee and Mai though. Azula I can get her not being their cup of tea, since she is so mean spirited to everyone and is always better than everyone else, but Ty Lee is more lively personality wise and pressuring points to stop benders seems like something they would appreciate and Mai with the blade throwing and deadpan snarker. Maybe season 3 will give them more to letch onto with these characters.

Jjop017 That's what I'm hoping as well. Book 3 gives more characterization to the villains, so maybe they'll warm up to them eventually. So far, it just seems like they dislike Ozai's Angels for the sole fact that they're evil, and I'm not really a fan of that.

Dark As Night With Azula it seems like they disliked her personality and the way she talked down to Iroh (one of their favorite characters), thus they disliked how powerful she was and how she seems to get what she wants. I guess they wanted her to be more of a gray character (but they had no complaints with Zhao who was just as villainous and disrespectful to Iroh in a more underhanded way). I can get that, because Azula's character isn't really explored beyond her being a more competent and evil version of Zuko and Zhao. The narrative goes out its way to show how much deadlier and evil Azula is to all the other villains so far. If you aren't sold on her in her first few outings, just seeing her constantly showing up and having the upper hand can get annoying. She really is a character you either love for being a bitch or you hate her for it. Ty Lee and Mai just seem odd, since they aren't super overpowered and have unique skillset beyond just being fire benders. Personality wise they have more going for them than Azula, so I'm surprised their dislike for Azula seems to extend to the other girls as well.

The earth kingdom is a nation composed of numerous city states with ba sing se as its center of power and commerce. However, many of the city states are self sustainable and independent, which explains the lack of unity and trade between these areas. That's why Omashu has their own king and military. This lack of unity is what made it so hard to fight the fire nation, even with the massive population advantage

What Zuko is going through is cognitive dissonance. This is what happens to your mind when something you know to be truth, or something you fully believe in us challenged. Most people rely on denial to protect themselves from it, others can actually go insane from confronting it, and those with neural plasticity are capable of adjusting their world view to accommodate the new information. Except it's not really true. Everything he says is a lie to preserve his own power. If news of the war reaches the King, he would take a more active role in managing the kingdom, thus reducing Long Feng's own power. People, most of them anyways, already know about the war. They just don't talk about it.

I Think the quote "Sleep, just like mother" was the blue dragon/Azula telling him to die (His mother has been missing for years, and presumed dead by basically everyone who knew her). His fever is extremely intense, he's really sick and being told to "sleep like mother" seemed to me like she was telling him (or his body) to stop fighting the fever. "Relax Fire Lord Zuko, just let go, give in to it, shut your eyes for a while..." Sounds like death was implied there.

The choregraphy at the beginning is so good. And Zuko faints when he makes good decisions, lol. The last two episodes of this season are so epic! Tbh I've never seen an actual "study" about that, but I think there is a significant symbolic about both "dream dragons" colors and the voice that were used for them (Azula and Iroh). But talking about it would spoil some bits of book 3 sooo. Since you haven't shown the "flying over the boats" scene in Appa's episode, I don't remember exactly, but I actually think I remember that it's Bato (you know, the dude they meet in book 1) who sees Appa flying over the boats. Regarding Zuko's "dream" well you have to know that it is ZUKO's dream. And he thinks his mom is dead since he was like... 10 years old? So that's where the line "sleep like mother" comes from, I think.

I think that it is only the king who truly didn't know anything of the war. The generals knew, but since there was no active military fighting the Fire Nation, not much is done on their end. The citizens of Ba Sing Se are completely or mostly unaware of it since the Di Lee discourage the news of the war within the walls. The refugees are the only people who really know about it, but are heavily discouraged and it is implied that they are not allowed to speak of it.

Yes, the provinces had autonomy and Ba Sing See has the power, but it was the lack of unification and intervention that kept the fight going.

I always figured Long Feng set things up so that no one could see the Earth King without seeing him first. The generals essentially deal with him, they think he tells the Earth King about things, and he comes back with instructions that they assume is from the king, but is really from him. The five generals were probably told not to mention anything about the war while in the palace or the city to the under the guise that it was to keep morale high. The whole reason for Long Feng to keep the war secret was he thought it was easier to control or manipulate an ignorant king who thinks he is letting his top advisor run the day to day operations whereas in war time the king would probably seek more counsel from his generals than Long Feng, Feng losses more power.

The Dai li are named after a guy called Dai li who was in charge of the secret military police in WW2 era japan

The Earth King is quite young. (early 20s maybe?) His family and previous king/queen were killed when he was at a young age. Long Feng was acting as regent until the current king came of age. Long Feng didn't want to lose power, so he essentially took over and kept the king in the dark. It's assumed that all major politicians, generals, and the military knew about the war. They just reported to Long Feng and the 5 generals. The Earth King was very much a puppet. Sort of like the Japanese Emperor during the Shogun times, only the Earth King was completely kept in the dark.

Theres a scene in an earlier episode where Long Fang was saying that they didn't allow war talk to keep the city peaceful, meanwhile they cut scene to Jet rambling about Zuko and Iron being fire nation. It seems insinuated they keep it quiet so that they don't have people like Jet who are untrusting and think people are spies and such.

This whole situation with Ba Sing Se and the King not knowing about the war is why the Earth Kingdom has lost so much territory during the war. Without the King playing an active role in organizing the war effort, Generals and others leaders had to take the situation into their own hands and thus not having the need unified force or large amounts of resources to combat the Fire Nation. I mean think about it the Fire Nation has conquered so much territory that Ba Sing Se and the North Pole are the last bases of strength that provide the Water Tribes and Earth Kingdom hope even when the Fire Nation is so close to winning the war.

I see two possibilities why the Council of Five didn't say anything about the Fire Nation attacks. One: The Dai Li blackmailed the Generals to keep them quiet and Two: Dai Li would intercept the messages between the King and Council. They are basically the Earth Kingdom's intelligence agency. Plus, we all know that Bosco controls the Earth Kingdom. :)

Long-Feng explained in "City of Walls and Secrets" that the king's priority was maintaining the "cultural heritage" of the earth kingdom and that anything outside of that was under his control including the military, this confused me at first since it was explained a couple times earlier that the Dai Li were there to protect the culture of the kingdom and city. This coupled by the fact that since the king did not have an active role in the military or its activities and thus no one would mention the war to him and the fact that he is guarded by the Dai Li almost all the time, they would most certainly silence anyone who would try, and the king would never question why someone has disappeared since Long-Feng pretty much controls him.

I was also always confused about how the Earth King could have a Council of Generals who knew about the war, without knowing about the war himself. The way I imagined it works is that the Five Generals in Ba Sing Se all know that the Dai Li are secretly controlling the King, but they can't really afford to do anything about it, so they just have a "don't ask don't tell thing" going on. If the Earth Kingdom lost the War, Long Feng would be just as screwed as everyone else, so I imagine he would let the Generals direct the war effort independently, but also have the Dai Lai keep constant tabs on them, to ensure they didn't tell too many people about the war going on. Of course, that still doesn't explain all the soldiers on the Wall, who would obviously know, and all the refugees who come in from the outside. Based on what that guy across the street said, it seems like there's actually a lot of people in Ba Sing Se who know about the War, soldiers, refugees, government ministers, but they all know better than to speak up about it. That way, the people who don't know carry on not knowing, and the people who do keep their mouths shut if they want to carry on living in the city.

Please direct all concerns about the war with me." and were just never allowed to meet the king. im sure long feng gave resources here and there with some excuses that made everyone not upset enough to storm in and meet the king themselves.

The King has never left the Royal Palace, and Long Feng has absolute control of the royal court. The king doesn't meet with anybody Long Feng doesn't want him to meet. At 8:00 the leader of the 5 Generals gets introduced to the king for the first time. People, most of them anyways, already know about the war. They just aren't allowed to talk about it around the inner wall.

I'm pretty sure the King had met General Shinu plenty of times before that. He introduces him, rather than being introduced to him, and he seems perfectly aware of who the General is. I don't think the scene would have played out like that if the King had never met Shinu before, and if he had only just found out what the Council of Five was. He seemed pretty comfortable in that knowledge. The most likely scenario is that he knew about the Generals, Long Feng just never allowed him to know what exactly the Generals were doing.

To follow up on Eric's curiosity, I think of Ba Sing Se as kinda like Romance of the 3 Kingdoms where Cao Cao takes over Wei's forces from their emperor. He wasn't in control so to speak, he just took control because people believed him and he had the army backing him up.

They already explained what the point of not talking about the war is. There was a big speech about it at the end of Chapter 14 when this was first revealed. And that was supposed to be Zuko as Aang. Only Airbending masters have the arrow tattoos.

I think a large amount of the populace knew about the war but didn't talk about it because of their fear of the Dai Li and Long Fei's influence on the king. Therefore, the council of five would be actively involved in fighting the war and protecting their walls but wouldn't mention it to the king or public.

To be fair to the earth kingdom soldiers protecting the palace, they have probably never been in battle considering Ba Sing Se is such a secure place "without war"

Red in Mandarin Chinese is hóng sè, and blue is lán sè. Even if it's more similar in other dialects, Chinese is not an Indo-European language (Spanish, Latin, English, etc.), so the thing with Iroh and Azula's names is just a coincidence :)
