I think the dutch angles are an homage to noir crime movies of the 50's, who if I remember right, did a lot of dutch angles. And awww, you skipped a really clever bit of writing in the scene where the cops are interrogating the Doctor. The scene starts with the cop standing over the Doctor, saying "Tell me everything you know," and as the scene progresses and the cop slowly admits that he's way out of his depth and doesn't know what to do, he sits down while the Doctor stands. And at the end of the scene it's the Doctor standing over the cop, saying "Tell me everything you know." Clever clever stuff.

Aaron, everyone in the UK says quid. Quid is slang for pounds just like you guys say bucks for dollars. There are London specific terms for certain amounts of money; £20 is a Score, £25 is a Pony, £100 is a Ton, £500 is a Monkey, and £1000 is a Grand. Grand for £1000 is a universal term now though.

also £300 is a carpet my dad worked on a fruit stall in London, and he uses all the slang- I use quid, grand, score, but tend to leave the rest out. Same with most cockney rhyming slang- I know pretty much all of it, but use very little myself.

The term "Quid" , as a slang for the British Pound Sterling, derives from the term "Quid Pro Quo"... as in something that is exchanged for services.
@franl1555 жыл бұрын
The alien TV presenter was Maureen Lipman; in the early days of the BBC presenters, male or female, had to wear evening dress; they also had to speak what became known as BBC English. That was actual Coronation footage, QEII's was the first coronation to be televised: TVs weren't very common in 1953, and they did sell or rent millions for the occasion, and had about 20 people in to squint at each tiny screen. Special occasions often called for street parties, where the whole street combined to make food for all. "Quid" is the usual form of "pounds"; quid is singular and plural; one quid, six quid.

You guys mentioned the tilted camera angles in this one; the thing I really love about Doctor Who is every other episode switches up its style depending on the kind of story it's telling. The episode with Charles Dickens had "ghosts", and a very gloomy, supernatural feel to it. The episodes with the Slitheen had the pretty standard sci-fi "aliens are taking over the world" sort of vibe. The grungy lighting of Tooth and Claw is entirely different from the bright, modern cinematography in School Reunion. It's a really fun way of switching things up that doesn't interfere with the story too much, while also keeping you on your toes and subconsciously reminding you that everywhere they go is someplace new-- a new time, a new planet, etc, even though it's almost entirely filmed in Cardiff. I love it.

Fun fact! This was originally written as a Ninth Doctor story, but since Chris only stayed one series, they changed it to Tennant. I have no idea what's going on with the Dutch angles, but I liked your guys' theory on how it makes things feel very unsettling and also a contrast between the "TV" shots and the usual shots. I mean, I don't hate this episode. It just doesn't do anything for me. There are some cool dramatic Doctor moments, and there's an underlying theme about politics and war veterans and hidden fascism even after WWII, but it never really goes anywhere important, except the scene where the son goes to help the father after he leaves, which I do like, and that's a bit of a shame. I'd say this is probably my least favorite Gatiss episode. Not that it's bad, it's not, but it just doesn't do anything for me personally, while some of his others at least engage me a bit more in some way. Either way, it was an incredibly enjoyable reaction nonetheless. You guys were obviously having fun. And the faceless people are really creepy looking. I'm glad we're making progress in this show, and as always, can't wait for what comes next.

Love them talking about colloquial English as an Englishman , its just funny. Quid is so commonplace
@kwesiidun85122 жыл бұрын
"Quid" is a colloquial term we say in the UK for our money, specifically in £1 increments. So £10 would be 10 quid or a "tenner" and £100 would be 100 quid and so on. Also fun facts: *This Episode is named after the former nickname for television sets when they first went on general sale in this country following the Second World War. 'Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, which this episode was based around, was the first major event in this country to be televised, live or otherwise. It was actually her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who insisted on it being televised as he was a massive advocate for modern technology and making sure that the royal family moved with the times. About 26 million people watched it here in the UK alone, and most of them were people who'd cram into the houses of their neighbours who'd have been the only people they knew who had a television as barely anyone owned them owned them at the time. *The BBC Television Service (now BBC One) was the only channel on TV here then. *The transmitter which the Doctor climes to try to stop Magpie from doing the invasive transmission is on the side of Alexandra Palace, which is a real-life entertainment venue in London which housed the original BBC TV studios. Hence why the that particular transmitter was vital to the plot. *The woman on the televisions going "Feed me!" was based on a real-life presenter who presented Watch With Mother, which was a children's programme on in the post-war era. She'd say, "Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin". The actress playing it in this episode is Dame Maureen Lipman who's a very popular veteran actress in this country. She currently stars as Evelyn Dobbs in our longest running television soap opera Coronation Street. *The reason that they had a long table out in the street was for their street party. Street parties are held in streets all over the UK to celebrate major national events, mostly royal-related such as royal weddings, Jubilees and Coronations such as in this episode. The street party tradition began in 1919 when they were known as "Peace Parties" held for communities to celebrate the end of the First World War. Street parties feature tables, food and drink, desserts, bunting, games, music, these days often gazebos and sometimes a bouncy castle and karaoke! *Apparently, the weather on Coronation Day wasn't as nice as it was portrayed in this. It was a stormy day with rain across the majority of the country, including London!

Yeah, we still say 'five quid'. The Wire, played brilliantly by Maureen Lipman, was doing a very good take on 50's BBC children's TV presentation.
