Keep in mind, Volume 7 to Volume 9 may have been 4 years for the audience, but it’s only been a couple of days for the characters. Probably hasn’t even been a week. Everyone is counting on Ruby. Blake told her that they would follow her lead when they got to Atlas. They expected her to make all the decisions. Which is kinda messed up because she’s the youngest one there except for Oscar. She made the decision to lie to Ironwood. And when one of her plans failed Yang kinda gave her shit for it. Yang: “We’ve been following your lead and things haven’t exactly worked out.” That’s literally what she said to her. You say Ruby should’ve talked to them about it, she literally tried multiple times but no one gave her a chance. Once in this episode and once in the herbalist episode. Yang was asking Ruby if she was ok but Blake said “Let’s not think about that right now.” And then the final straw was Weiss saying “It’s what they wanted, right Ruby?” As if she’s supposed to have all the answers. So yeah she exploded on them, they kinda gave her no choice. Also factor in the fact that in Volume 7 Ruby found out that the reason she lost her mother is because she went to fight Salem. Then Ironwood betrayed them, then Atlas fell, then Penny died. Again, this all happened within a couple of days. She’s had no time to process any of this. I know it’s hard to keep up with all the details when you watch multiple shows and it’s been 3 years since the last Volume of RWBY for them, but I wish someone could fill them in better on things they overlooked or forgot about.

Volume 8 was 48 hours and this volume has seemed to be so far maybe 3 days. Volume 7 had a montage towards the beginning that was probably at least a week but probably not more than a month, but after that again maybe 2-3 days. So really since the end of Volume 5 has probably been less than 2 months.
@VLK_Static7 ай бұрын
@@nathanielreik6617 I think there was something that Volume 7 was the span of a few months. between everything, and things going to a routine. but the end of that through volume 8 was maybe a week tops. and its implied that they have been in the ever after for a little while probably a week or so. The pebble tower represents the fall of Beacon Tower, the first incident Jaune failed to prevent. And the water submerging the town is a stand-in for the fall of Atlas, the last failure. In an attempt to make up for his past mistakes, they are all still flooding back.
@johanliebert98728 ай бұрын
This is the lesson the Ever After is trying to teach Jaune by having to see someone he cares about pass on and learning to let go. That is okay. But he interfered because he isn't mentally healthy enough to understand that after all the trauma he's been through. He needs to forgive himself for Penny's death. He hasn't and that's why he can't let the Paper Pleasers go. The parallel at the end of the flooding of Jaune's village and what happened to Atlas is damn brilliant.

There's a pair or reactors that I've been watching who are going through RWBY as well and a few months ago they were going through Volume 4 and they several times mentioned how Ruby seemed to be holding so much in and taking on so much responsibility and she needed time to grieve and let her burden down. Watching that reaction and analysis maybe a month or two after watching this was crazy.

Of the literally dozens of RWBY reactors I've seen, DnD are by far the best. Those two actually get the characters and the intentions behind the story on a level nobody else does. It helps they've been watching 6 volumes so far without interrupts, but they're clearly paying attention and remembering details a lot better than anyone else, and they seem way more invested in the characters. By contrast, most of BW haven't seen RWBY for 2 years, and originally started like 8 years ago, but even back then, I feel like they weren't as invested in the story as much as others.

Ruby has been called a Mary Sue by haters for a decade because she’s always the chipper and competent leader and never has her own problems. This blowup was beyond overdue. I don’t get how you can interpret it as her just being whiny or bratty or not communicating. I understand it’s been years for y’all, but things ended pretty dark before this volume and that was days ago for the characters.
@jaih55297 ай бұрын
Every time Ruby's feelings were about to be the focus, something "more important" would come up and she'd be pushed to the side. When you look at it purely from her perspective, its easy to see why she'd feel like no-one cared that she wasn't coping with the pressure of leadership or the weight of failure when her decisions didn't work out.
@mnevam8 ай бұрын
What I’ve noticed watching reactions that I didn’t really notice before is, Ruby is constantly interrupted in this volume. “Why didn’t she just say something?” She never got a chance. It’s hard enough talking about depression and stuff like that, but if the world keeps interrupting you when you try to, it’s no surprise that Ruby erupted like she did. And it’s possible that the people of Remnant doesn’t know much about depression because Grimm are attracted to negative emotions and the mentally unwell people are killed by the Grimm

Way back in the Beacon days, there was that time when Pyrrha led Jaune to a secluded rooftop to talk and Jaune was like "Uh, I'm not that depressed". Ruby and Jaune are the most positive and sunny people in RWBY. So, seeing them snap like that (especially at each other) was weird but also refreshing. You know what i mean. You got to talk things out. People forget Ruby was younger than others when she got to Beacon and was suddenly thrust into the role of leader. And for Jaune, the guy was alone by himself for a long time before Alex and her brother ever came to. And had even more time alone after Alex left. People are social creatures, no matter how much one loves isolation, they have to interact with others of their own kind.

Man, you can tell Eric is getting a bit frustrated, at one point he rolls his eyes, haha. It understandable though. Although I would disagree with Eric on the feelings thing. My experience as a teenager is you usually bottle your feelings up, some hold it in till someone talks to them or at least try to, while others take the much harsher choice of ending early. I had a friend that it happen to, but he was dealing with a lot, while other things were happening. We had asked, but he would play it off and act like nothing wrong, until he made a choice. We still regret what happen, saying "we could've done more", "if only we knew", and etc. So it's not always like obvious.

The volume is very different, and unless you're into the very heavily character driven stuff, it can be a drag. I hope next chapter's raised stakes help. It really kicks off the finale in a big way. I do enjoy the volume, but it is a very heavy handed way for the writers to force the characters to confront their issues in a less natural way then other shows might. I would have preferred they figured out a way to do this storyline alongside Vacuo. It's like they treat the character development as an obstacle they need to be rid of before they can write the Vacuo arc.

Neo wants revenge on Ruby BECAUSE of what happened to Roman. He died after she was flung from the ship and original blamed Cinder, but she convinced Neo it was Ruby's fault so that's what she believes and wants to end her. I'm thankful you guys kept your heads together for the most part, watching people be judgmental over this moment was really annoying and it's nice to see a discussion that is more reasonable. The problem with Ruby is on both sides. She's trying to uphold her perception of a leader and a hero and keeping it all in so that she doesn't bring everyone else down. The others also DID notice, but didn't push to make sure she was ok. Everyone in the situation tripped up a little. I'm not sure you're belief that the entire realm is talking about purpose is needed. You're focusing in on that too hard I feel. Not everything in the season needs to be forced through that thread. Make sure you're ready for the next episode. Won't say anything, but some would consider it rather harsh.
@silvereyed7 ай бұрын
a strong counterattack made by Jaune in this episode was that the whole reason Atlas fell and Salem got the relics was because Ruby's incredibly high risk plan failed. I remember that some of the fandom was incredibly angry at ruby in vol 7 and 8 because she wasn't making smart or risk free choices, and that she was leading them to disaster and being written horribly, and I laugh at them now because that was the POINT. The writers were intentionally leading ruby astray, so that her resolve was starting to crumble, and she started to doubt herself that she could even be the leader and hero everyone wanted her to be and SAW her to be. just goes to show that some people dont understand how writing works

The conversation about the Ascension the Afterans go through in this episode was always weird to me. Even if from a literal sense the Afterans are reborn, their memories are gone, as stated by the Curious Cat. And even in a world with souls, our memories and experiences are still what make us who we are. If you want to be more literal, our brain chemistry makes us who we are, as we can alter anyone's brain in any slight way, or maybe someone had a brain injury, and that person's behavior and personality can change drastically. They are, for all intents and purposes, a different person. And that's while they're still alive. So if they were to then die and be replaced (or reborn in new bodies) we can presume that because they wouldn't have any memories, they wouldn't be the same people, but new ones.
@valathor958 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Wiess said it best in the episode. “From a certain point of view.” I agree with your point of view on it, however do we have the right to force the Afterans to conform to that viewpoint. That’s the real question. CRWBY never definitively say if ascension is right or wrong, and based on Ruby’s final choice she seems to agree with your viewpoint.

Spoilers for the rest of the volume: I really need volume 10 to happen, because I NEED emotional resolution between Ruby and her team. I need apologies and I need 'em to be big. All volume Ruby has not been subtle about where her head was at, but at every turn her team expected her to be the pillar and averted their attention. Even though she didn't outright say "hey I'm not feeling great" (because who in her position would?) I think it was still a major oversight on their part for not noticing at all. And even when she tried to open up several times this episode, she was always interrupted and shunted to the side. Her blowup was cruel, sure, but it was earned. And then for Jaune to tell her it was all her fault when that was the heart of her insecurities that they needed to be sensitive about, makes my blood boil. And then if you notice, the conversation immediately transitions back into Jaune and his problems. Even after reaching her breaking point and exploding, they still can't keep their focus on her. A group hug was not enough for me at the end of the volume, I need spoken words BADLY.

Ruby is definitely out of line in this episode with her outburst. However she's also kind of right. Her character follows the anime cliche of "happy go lucky leader". She does carry a mountain of a burden with all the things going on. She's involved in fighting against a world ending threat. And she's only 17. Her friends are more OK because they rely on Ruby to be the voice of reason and positivity. When all is said and done, Ruby really does carry too much burden. Her lashing out was harsh and rude, but she's got a lot on her plate. I get it.

I know everyone's gonna hate me for saying this, but it's my honest opinion. I don't have any sympathy for Ruby's meltdown. Everything that she was so depressed about was pretty much her own fault. Ruby gets mad because she feels like she'll never be as good of a huntress as her mom. Nobody else put pressure on Ruby, she did that to herself. Ruby also complains that she's tired of being the leader, and she's tired of everyone always looking to her for answers. Nobody forced Ruby to be the leader, Ruby has spent the entire series saying how huch she wants to be the leader and how badly she wants to be a huntress. Ruby has always had this romanticized version of being a huntress in her mind and thinks it's all a big fairytale. It's not everyone else's fault that Ruby isn't emotionally mature enough to handle the burden of being the leader. Plus Ruby had plenty of opportunities to ask for help, but she chose not to. That's her own fault, Juane, Weiss, Blake, and Yang did nothing to deserve the hateful things that Ruby said to everyone.
@adamhughes43878 ай бұрын
completely wrong sorry. Ruby never wanted to be the leader. Ozpin put that on her and actually tells her to shoulder her teams burdens back in volume 1. So she does. She pushes all her own emotions down because she thinks she has to be the strong, positive one to help the others keep going. She always wanted to be a huntress sure but she didn't know about Salem until volume 4 when she was already heavily involved and had already started repressing. She didn't know that Summer died to Salem until 7. Then 8 happens and suddenly she is given an even more horrifying alternative fate for her. The whole group does continually look to her to make the decisions. When Beacon falls and RNJR is formed the three members of JNPR without question look to Ruby to be the leader. When Ozpin abandons them and Qrow sinks further into his drinking, they look to Ruby to call the shots. Blake outright tells her 'we'll follow your lead' when they arrive in Atlas and later admits to looking up to her. Finally, Ruby is clearly depressed and traumatised at this point. Even in a completely safe environment, asking for help with that is difficult. And there are several times when she is about to open up only to be interupted. Not to mention several obvious signs of her struggling that her team didn't notice because they're focussed on surviving the ever after and getting back to Remnant. And while Ruby was very harsh to them this is everything she's been bottling up for 9 volumes exploding at once.

I kind of understand everyone's POV because she has been suppressing her emotions since the end of volume 3 where everyone of Team RWBY took a break while the others didn't and thus led her to keep fighting because back then she idolized the job of a Huntress, being a hero like in the childhood stories to keep up on the same level as prestige as she felt for her mom her entire life so obviously she put a good part of pressure on her all by herself and constantly failing in almost everything they tried to stop Salem or at best, slow her down added way more on her and everyone else. What i want to say is that in my opinion they're all in wrong because what happens to them are the consequences of their actions because they failed way more times than won
