Belters use resources from planets, but they can't live there cause of their physiognomy and biology, if try to adapt to planets, more then 80% of them will die of, and the rest who adapted will become new "race"..Belters adapting to planets would be a sort of a genocide

The show never did a good job of explaining how few Belters there actually are. Earth-Luna, has a population of about 30 billion. Mars has a population of about 9 billion. At most, there are about 100 million people in the Belt and Outer Planets. So when agreements were being drawn up to divide up the new systems, the Belt was never going to get a full 1/3 of the systems. They were only ever going to get a handful. They traded away several of those systems to Earth and Mars to become the sole administrators of the Ring Space itself. They traded another to the Mormons to settle the legal battle over the Nauvoo / Medina Station. We never hear if they had any systems left for themselves after that.

I love the questions and topics this show brings up that spark debate, even within yourself. The topic of the Belters being a nomadic culture and some of them fighting against colonizing new planets because they're scared they'll lose that culture is interesting. Another one is whether you let humans go out and explore and colonize new planets or you play it safe and slowly make sure you're not going to spring a trap or set off a chain of circumstances that results in catastrophic death. The Expanse is like top tier Star Trek in that it gives you all sorts of dilemmas and issues to think about and debate and also reflect on how they apply to our lives now in the real world. Love it.

"There's no fish in space..." Actually, fish would be one of the easiest things to take into space. Huge aquarium-like tanks with controlled environment. NASA engineers originally had plans to have a recycling system for the ISS that had tilapia tanks hooked to algae farms hooked to the solar panels. Tilapia thrive on dirty water, so some of the waste the crew produce would go into the tank. The waste heat of the ISS would keep the tank warm enough for the fish. In the SF world of Robotech the SF author had huge tanks of shrimp (fed on human waste) which they turned into a tofu-like protein paste that could then be processed into a simuli of any kind of meat.

"I feel like the culture should be against the society that put you there, not just against where the society lives" I think you underestimate how environment shapes culture. You can maybe disagree with Drummer, but from her perspective it's not just "Earthers and Martians are bad specifically" it's "there is something about living on a planet that leads to the exploitation of people who live in space" and she's probably right for exactly the reason Aaron gave after, because belters rely a decent amount on "inners" there is a power imbalance that is ever present and that power imbalance is going to persist even on exo-planets and even if the original settlers were belters. It is not that crazy to think in just a few generations people on Illus will be doing exactly the same things to belters that Earth and Mars has done just because they can because they have their own planet.
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, a planet can just support a lot more people and has a lot of ressources and both relatively centralized compared to the belters who are extreme decentralized. I would guess most of the ressources are mined in space at that point, but all over the Sol system. So while the overall ressources are mostly in Belter hands, Earth and Mars have a higher density of ressources and people and are therefore more capable of building and maintaining fleets ect. . The situation of the belters is a bit like workers in the 19th century who lived in barracks right next to the factories and were not allowed to leave the area, just that the belters really can't leave, because outside of their workplace is just empty space and a lot of them are not even capable of living on planets. I don't even know how much belters really rely on the inners? I mean, most of the ressources they need are probably from space, even water.
@thomasmann4536
@thomasmann4536 Жыл бұрын
yes and no. Culture doesn't just change when your environment changes. This is why the melting pot idea failed for the US, because the people immigrating there didn't just give up their identity. Our history matters to us, so it's actually quite far fetched to believe that in just 2 generations (when your grandparents are usually still around by the time you're old enough to understand stuff) an entire culture would change that drastically. Even on earth, there has not been such a culture shift in the history of our species.

For anyone who felt season 4 was lacking or less action packed, read Cibola Burn. Although, I think they did a great job adapting the book to fit the budget and number of episodes, a major part of the storyline was cut out as a result, and I think with it a large part of the action. Season 4 is still good though, but definitely read the book.

They "omited" nearly the entire orbit thing between the 3 ships.. left the attack and towing thing but a lot of stuff missing from the book including the whole Havelock thing.. however they added much more stuff going on thats not in the books including the whole Bobie , Avasarala and Drummer/Ashford - Inaros arcs all of wich will tie with S5/6. so considering what the book tells they did a good job.. but i understand (it was clear while reading CB) that after the rush S2 and 3 was many people will find S4 as a downer in pace

@@sparrowlt I think they added the stuff with Bobbie/Avasarala & Drummer/Ashford from book 5 for the benefit of keeping those characters for the season, which is fine. Of course Drummer is an amalgamation of characters they've omitted from the book too. I think they're done a good job keeping the essence of the books in the show. I was just suggesting to anyone who may have felt s4 was slow that there's a richer, fuller story in the book 4, if they're interested.

@@olentie also i feel they cutted too much of the Murty-Coop history only in the side of Coop wich makes Murty appear more "evil" .. i mean in the book Coop and his minions kill RCE security personal like 2 more times after the shuttle attack , all of them unprovoqued and ambushing them in order to murder them.. and they were caught planing another attack.. the show deleted the 2 murders and after the shuttle and 2 separated multiple murders to his personel and friends Murty was more than enought pissed with the Belters and Coop .. then they left Murty retaliations pretty much intact in the show wich makes Murty look quite more violent and willing to kill belters..at least in the first half of the book before he becames full greedy
@olentie
@olentie 2 жыл бұрын
@@sparrowlt @sparrowJLT this is a great point. Although Murty still felt like the "bad" guy to me, the attack on the shuttle etc does put in context some of his actions. With the Belters attack cut, it kind of makes them seem more helpless and blameless. Also, it takes away the redemption of Coop at the end, which I think was a good part of the story. I definitely think time and budget explained cutting the orbit arc, but I think leaving out the plotting of Coop and the Belters made the story more one dimensional. Again I think it was too fit it all in a short season. I would have preferred cutting the parts on Mars that is really from book 5 and keeping the Belters/Earther conflict intact. I do think that was for the TV side to keep contact with all of our characters, so I get why they did that.

Not too much Avasarala, last season, but you get a lot more of her, this time. And, now we see the type of story this is -- a frontier story, and the best frontier stories are Westerns. The initial setup, here, comes straight out of Sergio Leone's, "A Fistful of Dollars," with its two violent, rival factions in one small town. This season isn't quite the awesome chaos as Season 3, but it does set up a lot of stuff for the next two seasons. The impact on existing politics is just the surface, really. Your discussion on the cultural impacts, as seen in Drummer's comments, really foreshadows some of the other events we'll see, this season. I enjoyed it. :)

In many countries occupied by the British, the natives were "better off" integrating entirely, learning British history, learning the English language, going to English schools, working for British companies, etc... A lot of it was forced, some of it was incentivized, but some of it also happened voluntarily, because parents want the best lives for their children. that's kinda not the same though, because the belters wouldn't integrate into inner society, they'd build their own, just on a planet, instead of space. Bear in mind they have their own culture, their own dialect of the language, their own traditions, their own laws and their own political systems. They created a society for themselves in the most inhospitable circumstances while being under the rule of Mars and Earth. Of course they'd want to preserve that even if economically or even pragmatically, it'd make sense to just abandon all those traditions and that culture and just create a new one or assimilate into the way of life of the inners they fought against for decades. It's like asking a Native American why they bother learning their own tribe's language when English is so much more useful for getting into a university or finding a job, whereas their native tongue might not be useful for getting a job or getting into a university. Well the answer is - that's not why they learn it.

There's plenty of examples of that in the american history, and plenty more in other parts of the world. Oh, and by the way: You can be bilingual, that's what most of the world does. Anyways, I speak 4 languages, I am not talking about being bilingual, here, I am saying people who'd argue there is no point in even learning a language since it's not pragmatically useful. As I mention in the OP, some parents legit avoid their own culture because they know their children would have a better shot at a good education and a good job if they minimize that part of themselves. Learn from foreign renowned universities and work for foreign multi-national companies. It's something that happens naturally over time. If we're checking out Rome - What happens after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire? Are all the territories in Gaul, Brittania, Iberia still Roman? Do they call themselves Roman? Do they keep their Roman culture? How long until they don't? There's some attempts like the Holy Roman Empire, but as the saying goes they were never really holy, roman or an empire.

FYI: The major difference of Book 4 and Season 4 is that Naomi doesn't land on Ilus in the book. Her story mainly revolve around the orbit of Ilus, and the orbit portion was cut out but wasn't all that impactful to make a difference, it is a reasonable alteration to keep everything on land and still include all the members. The difference was important however because Belters simply do not land on major gravity well. Naomi or any other Belters simply can't survive for long on any of the major planets. Also, it's not that no one believe in Columbus, so much as no many people think it's worth the expenses to fund the exploration.
@olentie
@olentie 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the show did a great job adapting book 4, so that omitting what happened in orbit was seamless and kept a great coherent story. What happened in orbit and how it effected what happened in the planet was actually a great part of the story though. I'm glad that the show didn't feel like it was lacking without that part though.
@biocapsule7311
@biocapsule7311 2 жыл бұрын
@@olentie The orbital story wasn't really all that impactful story wise. That's why it's not all that hard to cut it out, or transfer to extras or off screen characters. It consist mainly of extra complications, making more problems for the characters to solve, but doesn't change what is require of them. It's basically side quests. The story overall is essentially the same, except without orbital parts.

@@olentie Certainly, when you alter something, other things always change. Agree to disagree indeed. I just want to point out that what it change didn't altered any of the core points of the book at all, that why I consider those things cut having no real impact. Murtry & Holden gets their face to face about civilization, Miller & Amos gets the same resolution, what was suppose to fail, succeeds to the dismay of some, with the same sets of very horrible things (water & worms) being resolve. lol

New Terra/ Ilus is an Earth-size planet and apparently titanium rich, so why is that tiny spec of land so important to both parties? You would think there would be room for both Belters and RCE like an ocean or two separating them.

In the books, there's a large lithium (not titanium) deposit near the site of First Landing, rather than the whole planet "being made of lithium" as Avarasala describes it in the show. If Avasarala were accurate, then the two Belters and the RCE could settle different parts of the planet and both mine lithium there for a long time without major competition. But since it's actually* only in that one spot, that makes that particular location far more valuable to both parties. *There's actually a lot more lithium than that one location, but its buried a lot deeper underground and, at this point, no one knows about it yet.

@@Reedstilt The show should have stuck to the books to set up the conflict better. Also in the book, Holden's primary mission was as an official mediator and second to investigate the PM. The mediator role was left out of the show.
@Reedstilt
@Reedstilt 2 жыл бұрын
@@billross7245 It's also a shame that we don't explicitly get the real reason Avasarala and Johnson chose Holden to be the mediator. We kind of get a bizarro-reaction from Avasarala along those lines eventually in the show, so I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. But it's clear that while she would have liked a certain outcome she didn't plan on it happening from the start like her book counterpart did.

Here in Malaysia and the Phillipines, there is tribe that live solely on boats in the sea. They are called Badjau, the sea gypsie. It's part of their culture not to live on the land. The only time they come to an island or the land is to get essential supplies like fresh water and fire wood, and to trade. Calvin is wrong to equate Belters that disagree to of living on a planet to not wanting of free school. Completely wrong scenario. Belters are Belters because they live in space. It is part of their culture, way of lives. They can't call themselves Belters if they live on a planet.

But I would say humans aren't natural explorers, because a lot of stuff isn't really in the realm of "human nature". So yeah, it's not in our DNA to explore, but there were definitely a lot of persons and organizations who where really interested in exploring and mapping the world. You could say exploration was never the driver, because they always just hoped to find ressources and get wealthy or something like that, but exploration for ressources or for new ways to already known ressources/trade partners is still exploration.
