Those are not rings to other galaxies... At least that is not confirmed. Those are gates to other systems. I suggest you watch the season 4 trailers before jumping right into the premiere. At the time the show was broadcast, the end of the series was suposed to be at the season 3. Imagine our feelings when discovering all those possibilities and questions would remain unanswered. PS: I am sorry if I mispoke something since English is not my first language.

Now that spoilers are not an issue. The ring space is basically a pocket dimension built by the ancient civilization as a transportation hub for their interstellar empire. The station at the center controls that space. Now thanks to Miller, humanity has access to it and 1300 habitable star systems that it links to.

"Bunch of blade boys humping shank." Holden doesn't know what that means, but Drummer, by her sidelong glance at Naomi, clearly does (a Ceres gang ritual). The statement is like the hat, a detail Holden couldn't have invented that establishes the reality of Miller.

Did you notice how Clarissa shut down the reactor? Do you remember, when we first saw her, the guy she ended up killing showed her those same glowing switches (fuses) whatever they are. He reminded her that if one of them was in reversed, it would shut down everything. So basically, the first person she killed was the one who made it possible for her to be redeemed, and save everyone. And, in reality, if Clarissa hadn't done everything she did (her mission to kill Holden) the Rosi would never have gone into the ring, everyone else wouldn't have followed, Holden would never have gone to the nucleus and so on. She's literally responsible for everything that's happened.

Now we can talk about why the show is called "The EXPANSE". It's felt like a spoiler to discuss the protomolecule up to this point. That is the brilliance of this show to me, and why it is often compared to Game of Thrones. The human squabbles (generational war, different political factions, power, greed) all tied to a sci-fi/fantasy element (white walkers/protomolecule), can show that human division and conflict will blind people to the truth or the real threat. I absolutely love it.

When we first met Melba (Clarissa), her boss (who she killed) warned her not to put in a circuit breaker (thingy) in backwards, or it would lead to a chain reaction that would shut down power for the entire ship. I told you this was a great finale. The Ring station controls the Rings leading to 1300 systems that have been Proto-formed by the Protomolecule builders. Apparently, the fact that they're all habitable (for humans) indicates the Protomolecule builders used the same kind of environment (but that doesn't mean they were humanoid...billions of different non-humanoid creatures share even our own planet). Naomi had already told Holden that she loved him.

Amos stays absolutely true to his core motivation. As he told Alex, "The way I see it, there’s only three kinds of people in this world. Bad ones, ones you follow, and ones you need to protect." Prax, Alex and Anna are people who need to be protected. They are good people and he'll put himself between them and danger. Naomi is someone who needs to be followed and protected. Holden is someone who has earned his loyalty and fealty, by proving to Amos that he genuinely wants what's best for everyone he comes in contact with; therefore, Amos is good with following his directives. He's neutral toward Bobbie and Avasarala, but will put a bullet between everyone else's eyes without a second thought.

In my head, regardless of what category she falls in, Avasarala is both liked and respected by Amos. Game recognizes game. Season 4 is in a way a new beginning, the first 3 seasons were like a prologue. Season 4 is slower then season 3 but it sets up things for the future and has some more world building like we had in season 1. And the 1300 are not galaxies (that are collection of usually hundred of thousand of stars) but solar systems like our own (with the Sun and planets) where there is a habitable planet able to be colonized. As of now we don't know but it's safe to assume that all the star system that the gates opened to are within our own galaxy because the distances between galaxies is so vast it's almost impossible to spread beyond your own galaxy in any reasonable time frame (In the books is a bit clearer where they are). Also i really love Ashford, great actor and a character.

I think Amos, for whatever reason, is missing something within himself when it comes to certain moral decsion making. Interestingly though he recognizes this deficiency in himself and looks to others to be his moral compass. This explains his relationship with Naomi and as we just saw in this episode how he now feels about Anna. He feels very protective of the people in his life who he believes are good people and will go to any lengths to protect them.

So the nine books are pretty clearly divided into sets of 3. The first set focuses entirely on Earth/Mars/Belt and culminates with the opening of the rings. Books 4-6 deal with the aftermath of opening the gates and the impact it has on those three. Y'all aren't ready to know what 7-9 focus on. Enjoy S4 though!

@@kaiepstein5331 I assume you mean 8, but yes. I like how well crafted the story is, that as the scope of the story grows, it never feels overwhelming. This was the point. This is where the show could've ended due to cancellation. Right when the Ring Gates to 1,300 habitable systems were opened. I HATED it because it was SUCH a huge shift in the possibilities of the series. HOWEVER, when the fight was seeming lost and I was resigning myself, I could at least look at how they ended season 3 on this note of danger but limitless options and say "this it at least a satisfying conclusion." I thought maybe, maybe it will at least get people to consider the book series. And then, y'know, we all got the good news and there was much happy dancing. :D Again, so glad y'all are watching.

Steve got it right in the end. This show is about mankind venturing into the dark and what we might do to ourselves with all the stuff that we find out there. Aliens will continue to play an important role, but not in same old way most other sci-fi franchises do. Since we can now talk more openly about the Protomolecule, we can also say that Steve got that thing right too in the end. The Protomolecule is merely a tool to build ring gates in the star system it was sent to and connect them with the Nucleus and the rest of the civilization of The Builders. That autonomous tool still has an objective though. Steve still gets one little detail wrong though: The Builders did not erase countless if mankind-like civilizations. As far as we know up to this point there were only two civilizations on that level of technology billions of years ago: "The Builders", and "The Others" who destroyed the Builders. So what Holden saw in his vision was the past (but also a possible future). And in the books he did not just see it, he was connected to it. He could feel the presence of the entire civilization - every little individuum across 1,300 star system - as if it was his own body, and he could feel how this civilization cut off one "limb" (star system) after another to stop the advance of that other alien entity. Of course the Protomolecule steam roller might have plowed over many anthills, but at this point we don't know anything about that. Fast forward a few billion years into the 23th century: An orphaned cluster of Protomolecule that lay dormant for billions of years finally completes its primary objective and builds a ring gate in the Sol system only to find out that there's no one left to confirm the success of the mission. Instead there are all these Neanderthals in flying tin cans, always ready to beat the shit out each other with their nuclear clubs, but also able to open doors that the Protomolecule cannot access. And so it creates an avatar to communicate with one of these monkeys.

Yes! Thank you for that explanation ^_^ Has kind of bugged me a little that they didn't picked up on it and focused on the protomolycule as the big bad. I understand though, it's A Lot to take in from just snippets of information and the protomolycule was the center of it all for almost every season so far for them X'D But still, the thought of "The Others" and the fate of "The Builders" is more than terrifying that it overshadowed for me everything else that had been a "threat" to humankind. Like a cosmic horror you couldn't even fathom. Can't wait for them to watch next one!

The Ring-Builders (my name) are/were really freaking ancient. There is no FTL travel in The Expense universe. Sure The Rings allow space to be warped for shortcuts, but before that they have to fling out a glob of p-molecule to another system WAIT decades/Centuries/MILLENIA to travel the slow way there, then begin "The Work" to build another Ring.
@sverebom7069
@sverebom7069 4 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that the Builders did exist in a hive mind construct and therefore did not experience the passage of time the same way we do. Plus: With wormholes there are ways to get around that problem and use time dilation to your advantage. Create a wormhole, install it on a ship, send that ship to its destination at a fraction of the speed of light, and while millenia will pass for an outside observer, you can walk through that wormhole after a few years and decades and immediately arrive your destination because your "wormhole carrier" will have experienced time dilation. Plus Plus: The Builders certainly used the closest starting point to send a lump of protomolecule to the next star system. If Alpha Centauri has a ring gate, they would have sent the Protomolecule from there and not from the other side of the galaxy.

I don't think Belters say ''I love you''. For example, Miller never said ''I love you'' to Julie when he kept seeing Julie on Eros in season 1 episode 10. But he kept making a hand gesture, his thumb wiping his lip. That is how Belter says ''I love you''.

@Nikki - According to my understanding the thing that Holden saw in the last shot was a glimpse whatever it was that destroyed the ringbuilder's civilization. As far season four goes, it is on the quiet side but I consider it a "reloading" season for what is coming next as you start to see the build up to not one, but two major storylines.

@watashi That completely makes sense. Maybe that is what Naomi is doing. The book doesn't say her motivation (first 2 books at least). She would either need to say it explicitly, or we'd need a chapter from her. It could also have to do with her past relations too. I just dunno.

The ring opened up 1300 new *solar systems* in our galaxy, The Milky Way. I've always wondered if one of them was Alpha Centauri or Tau Ceti which are among the closest solar systems to Sol System(us) with planets

@paulmccloud9395
@paulmccloud9395 4 жыл бұрын
Yes each one leads to a system with a habitable world. Alpha Centauri is a possibility, since it's believed there are habitable planets in the system (with our current knowledge). Same with Tau Ceti (5 possible habitable worlds with our current knowledge.) Although thinking about it, I assume each gate leads to a world the ancient empire once was part of (after all why have gates to a world you don't own) so it's unlikely Alpha and Tau are part of it, since if they had colonies there, they would have come to Earth long ago too. (since it's so close). My guess is the ancient civilisation homeworld was quite distant, maybe in another quadrant of the galaxy, and the gates lead to systems near their homeworld, so thousands of light years away. (I haven't read the books so it's just a guess). Apha Centauri and Tau Ceti will be future targets for us though, one day, when we build our space empire. :)

Great reaction but I think you both misunderstood what Holden said at the end. Steven said that the ring opened "1300 pathways to new parts of the system" while Nikki said it opened paths to "new galaxies." Holden didn't say either of these. Humans already have the ability to travel to all parts of the solar system using the Epstein Drive, so they wouldn't need the ring for that. But humans didn't have interstellar travel - until this episode. Holden said the ring opened paths to "1300 habitable systems." Presumably, those 1300 systems are probably all within our own galaxy. Since it contains about 200 billion star systems, there are probably more than 1300 habitable systems among that 200 billion. There would be no need to reach other galaxies (even though we haven't been explicitly told the ring doesn't connect to other galaxies.) I hope this helps clear up some of the background for the story. Looking forward to more of your insightful reactions!

Spoiler free The thing with Melba is, she was all in on her dad's visionary perspective regarding the proto molecule. Holden brought him down and Melba thought that her dad's dream died with that. While locked up with Holden however. Not only did she have a talk with Anna, but also got to witness, Holden - in part - carrying on her dad's dream, to see more in the proto molecule than it seems on the surface

Ashford is a high-minded, selfless guy - but it turns out even that can be a vice: he was enthralled, intoxicated, by the nobility of the action he had decided upon. It fit so entirely with his self image that once resolved to do so, he couldn't abide any derailing of his impending heroic sacrifice. People are much given to adopting positions based on sound principles but, having attached their own sense of self worth and status to them, then proceed to defend that position with inflexible zealotry and stubborn belligerence regardless of the cost, rather than go through the excruciating experience of incorporating further, unwelcome, information or context.

The protomolecule was basically sent to all these systems to build a ring. All habitable systems. Some of them however attacked the ring and their star system was destroyed in defense. But all those rings are interconnected. THere is now a road to all these systems, all habitable, all "new earths". At least that's how I understood it. As for who came up with it: James S. A. Corey. He wrote the novels the show is based on. PS: Did you find a nice place for the solar system poster? :)

One thing to ponder as you prepare to dive into Season 4... With over 1300 new gates opening up in the bubble, and the mention of an expected bloodsoaked goldrush to claim what's beyond them... what do you think could be the implications for Earth, Mars & The Belt separately? If you give it serious thought there is some scary implications on the horizon...

Have you ever watched the TV show _Defiance_ that ran from 2013 through 2015? It's also fairly "hard" as popular media science fiction goes. It's no Expanse, but it comes closer than most other TV.
