I loved this vid Martin, it just shows how straightforward these little vertical crank engines are to work on. In fact, some 2 and 3.5 hp engines did come out of the Briggs & Stratton factory painted in gold in the 80s.

cracking little project that Martin, the engine looks right at home on the Trotter mower. when you used the piece of card, to set the gap between the coil pickup and flywheel, it took me right back to the days when id use a piece of a cig packet to set my cars points gap.

Great strip and rebuild video. I especially liked the way you put the piston with rings in by using a jubilee clip👍 That’s something I was taught by an old mechanic,used it many times in my past. Never failed to get the job done either.

I like that valve spring compressor - that's the one aspect of Briggs' engines of all sizes that presents a massive challenge when removing the valves. I had to make up a special tool to remove the valves on a 12.5hp side valve Briggs' engine after spending many, many hours of frustration trying to remove the valve spring collets.

When removing the sump plate clean up the shaft before and it will slip off easy, hope this helps for a future one. Good job looks fantastic.

Having done this a time or two, I would have wire wheeled the rust and crud off that crank and polished it a bit then a light oil and the case should have slipped off.

I did sand it before but t was corroded. I sanded it with 600, 1200 and 2000 grit paper and oiled it before I refitted it.

Martin went deep on the work for this one! Thanks for honing the cylinder, but remember, if you sandblast the head, you'll need to check the flatness, and sand it flat on your bench as such. Did the valve clearances look good? I thought you were going to lap them.

I'd filmed before, but this was the first thing I did just to make videos......and look where it's led. Still remember these engines as well. Oh just sold my Briggs, it's now in Leicestershire.

Martin try using kerosene to clean carbon of engine parts it works great I clean all my mower engines in it and if you mix kerosene and red diesel to gether at 50 50 mix it's better than wd40 for unceasing bolts and stuff
