I had the opportunity to photograph all the Sydney concerts Blink, AVA and +44 did since 2000. It is truly interesting to look back on the stage manner, the comedy and the way Tom and Mark responded to each other on stage. I believe the 2004 show at the Hordern (or any show from 2004 by the looks of the Wembley tour), that Tom and Mark were well and truly trying to out do each other and out play each other. You can hear at 4:20 that Travis is trying to keep the others in time with each other. Remember, that this was around the time when they reached absolute super stardom and were also getting a lot of flack from other musicians about how talented they actually were. Tom left soon after this tour and you can almost tell why in how forced the jokes and comedy are in this video. I love Blink more than the world, but they thought they both thought were better than "Blink" at this point. Flash back to 2013, the guys all got over themselves and realised that they no longer have anything to prove. They are the benchmark punk band to come out of SoCal in the 90's and they're still killing it. The Ataris, Sum 41, Third Eye Blind, Bowling for Soup etc etc never accomplished anything like these guys have. They sleep easy at night knowing that they can bring an album out every 5 years and us fans are still going to love them for telling us to fuck our own dads. They made it in 2000, it just took them a while to realise how high they reached so early. No more accomplishment was needed.

And now it's 2023 and they're back again and better than ever. All problems gone and forgotten, and unbreakable bond.
@avengerscaptain94804 жыл бұрын
you can tell how eccentric tom is becoming in this video, it’s interesting mark wrote a letter for a re release of TOYPAJ and in it he states around that time a “unspoken competition” formed between the 2. i personally think this effected tom more than mark, i think tom got pushed into a weird eccentric creative music space that evolved into his AVA sound and thats what led to the breakup tom wasn’t going to compromise his new musical sound anymore like he did for the TOYPAJ album, that’s why he did the boxcar racer album to. in the end i think tom viewed himself more musically creative that mark and the whole pre-untitled era of blink-182. evidence of this is when tom says “this is a creative song” during what’s my age again and how he seemingly comes more to life when they’re performing the untitled songs. you can see it he puts more effort into the untitled songs and blows off the other songs.
@Julianuribe234 жыл бұрын
First, I like the face to face profile pic. Second, you really do make serious points, especially about Tom bursting to life on the Untitled songs. It's almost like he's possessed in a passionate way when he plays Asthenia
@DaFreezeey3 жыл бұрын
I mean yeah I guess... I think this might be over thinking it just a tad... The most logical explanation could be that Untitled was just released and they were fresher to the 3 and so therefore they put more effort or "Passion" as you said, into them. Those older songs were 5 to 6 years old by that point and they probably had played them hundreds of times by then. I think any self respecting musician would feel the same way about that. Its just the human nature of it.... But I do agree with you that Tom was probably starting to believe that he was a bigger musical genius than Mark and probably knew that Mark wouldn't be able to understand the direction Tom wanted to go in... Hence Box Car and AVA
@conors44303 жыл бұрын
You are also seem to be forgetting that they were touring on the untitled album here, so you are always going to be more interested in the newest stuff, the other stuff is things they have been playing for years thousands of times. That’s literally what happens to most bands, that isn’t necessarily a sign of what was to come at all.

I was at the Hammersmith Apollo show in Feb 2004 and they were hating each other then. They barely spoke to the crowd and they played everything as fast as they could to get the hell out of there. I was at this concert! Thankyou so much for this upload! It was the most amazing thing my young mind had experienced. Before the days that you could film an entire concert on your phone. The show was well put together and they sounded incredible in a venue that was well known for sounding shitty. Travis’ drum solo was such a great surprise (props for dropping some fugazi in the mix!) and the entire crowd ran to the middle of the venue to get close to home. It was really special to see them play with Robert Smith. All the childhood memories just came flooding back and I feel all warm and fuzzy! Watching this now just makes me feel bad for Mark and how his voice hasn’t aged so well 😬

you can really see the tension 26:20 to 26:59 the jabs mark and tom exchanged although mark made the first comment. mark is basically making fun of tom for being eccentric and over the top, sure there was a unspoken competition between the 2 on who could write better songs but you never mark being over the top eccentric on stage like tom. tom is taking a jab at mark over the potty mouth humor that blink-182 had a reputation for at the time. tom was trying to creatively grow as musician but was trapped by the potty mouth reputation.

Whether it was intentional or an oversight by Tom not realising the effect it could have, absolutely anybody in their right mind would feel isolated and rejected like Mark did. Because it is basically saying, hey we want to try something without you.
