One thing about the relative immersiveness of the Deathtrap Dungeon worms scenario that I think you skipped over is the sound design. The Deathtrap Dungeon trilogy game has ambient sounds which are fine, and suit the general tone. Creaking metal, dripping water, typical dungeon-y sounds. The Interactive Video Adventure has a bit of that, and a little more prominently the crackling of the fire in the room from which Eddie Marsan is reading to you. More importantly though, in the scene with the worms there is the gross sound of slimy writhing creatures that puts the cherry on top of the experience. I haven't played the game so I cannot speak for events other than the ones shown here, but if that sound design and foley work is put into most of the events then I think that would be a large element of the immersion that should not go unpraised.

I really enjoyed Inkle Studios' adaptations of some of the Livingstone/Fighting Fantasy books, with their Sorcery! series. The first one is very straightforward and a little simplistic but the game really opens up with the second one. They definitely take the books as a jumping off point, but lets the text adapt to player choices more directly. Their use of the old illustrations with new maps blend pretty seamlessly, and the art direction definitely conveys grand (and weird) adventure.

Speaking of Deathtrap Dungeon, a few of the later Fighting Fantasy books would probably benefit from more attention, since they were more mechanically engaging, non linear and fairer, say titles such as Night Dragon, Moon Runner or more recently Howl of the Werewolf. I didn't see much that is different in FTW compared to Slay the Spire, only the map and theme seems different. The special encounter with a non-boss enemy with a lot of health where you only need to survive an amount of turns is in STS as well, even. I get of course that it's hard to compare, but I still don't understand how FTW is anything more then STS in space with a different map.

Maybe there's something I'm missing, especially given I haven't played Dicey Dungeons (looks good though), and I don't want to take away from the fact that FTW seems like a really nice mix of Slay the Spire deckbuilding and FTL theming and map mechanics, but it's not clear to me what your criticism of Slay the Spire is? There's a sui generis mention of excesses and of how Dicey Dungeons' focus on dice rolling is... simpler and clearer? But if anything, I'd say that Slay the Spire's small numbers, simple arithmetics (for the most part) and very clearly communicated effects would seem to be instantly clearer than a system that uses dice as its fundamentals, and therefore requires a player to consider probability fairly often while playing. Anyway, really enjoy your looks at smallre games, wish I had the time and money to engage with this stuff more.
@alexanderbrady54864 жыл бұрын
Beautiful Bear in a Tutu as someone who has played and enjoyed both, it is a question of scope and complexity. STS runs take about an hour if you aren’t rushing, with decks that are often 30+ cards from a 100-ish card pool. You can get lucky with some simple strategies, but getting “good” requires a decent understanding of how the cards work together. In Dicey Dungeons, a run take ~20 minutes. You have just 4-6 equipment (“cards”). You will often do the same or similar thing on every turn. It is still a fun game, but the skill cap for most of the Dicey Dungeons characters is much lower. In principle the random dice rolls can be complex, but in practice you don’t have to know very much probability (except that each face has a 1/6 chance).
@freddiekruger33394 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing that it's not a criticism. Just that as a newcomer to the genre he hasn't played slay the spire, but dicey dungeons clicked with him. If you're a deck building elitist then that's his warning to take his opinions with a grain of salt because he liked the deck building equivalent of Halo as opposed to Quake/unreal... If that metaphor made any sense at all

Really, it has aged better than the first Tomb Raider and I bet it had a much lower budget. I never played too much of it, but I know people who feel really nostalgic about it. This, out of all superficial channels out there, is the last I would think would go and flat out say "it's bad". I felt a tiny bit of disrespect for the time it was made and the - probable - effort from the developers.
