I can't decide which movie was worse, this or Legend of the Sword. Characters like Robin Hood, King Arthur and others are timeless. They don't need to be "grim and gritty" to get people's attention. Studios just need to stick to what made them appealing to begin with. That's why I loved The Kid Who Would Be King so much. It remained faithful to the core elements of King Arthur, while only putting small (emphasis on small) new touches. This movie...it does so much wrong
@user-qj9en1kp1m3 жыл бұрын
I love how the narrator says at the beginning: I could tell you what year it was, but it's not important. That is just an excuse to give up on historical accuracy. This movie is happening never, basically. I'm not surprised that this was produced by DiCaprio, as the movie turns into the Great Gatsby for a few minutes. Also, I was confused how he was drafted to go to war, but the name was on the inside, not on the outside of the letter. If Robin got the envelope addressed to some dude called "William of Marlborough", he could have been like "Well, this is not addressed to me" and would have never went to war.

"Man, this cast is waaay to good for this movie." At this point it's our catch phrase. The aesthetic for this movie buffles me. It seems like they were going to set the story in a completely anachronistic, fantasy-like setting, forgetting that Crusades and England's involvement in them were a really important part of the story. I especially hate Notthingham's suit jacket-like coat.
@Raximus30005 жыл бұрын
Don't even go there, they are treating the crusades like war in middle east if today where they are not a threat, they WERE a threat to Europe if only people would remember that.

@alexandredesbiens-brassard91095 жыл бұрын
@@inferno9714 And what source material would that be, exactly? Robin Hood is a hero of folklore. There is no one source for his story - his story has been told and retold over centuries, with every version making some changes. So much so we don't even have the "original" version of the story - the oldest version we have is from the 15th century, but we have works from the 13th century mentioning him. There is no source material to "respect". Just a premise and some familiar elements.
@inferno97145 жыл бұрын
Collex Ok but did ANYTHING in this movie happen in those stories?
@alexandredesbiens-brassard91095 жыл бұрын
@@inferno9714 Robin Hood is a lord called Robin of Loxley who comes back from a crusade to fight against the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, who is abusing his powers of taxation. So Robin starts stealing the tax money from the Sheriff to give back to the poor. There is a Marrianne, a Friar Tuck, a Will Scarlett, a Guy of Gisbourne and a Little John, here combine with Azeem, a character created for the Kevin Costner version and played by Morgan Freeman. Yes, it has a very silly style and aesthetic, and it is hilariously over the top, but it has all the traditional elements of a Robin Hood story.
@morphman864 жыл бұрын
They actually got quite a few things accurate in this film, not just the seemingly out-of-this-world parkour archery. For example, that accent at the beginning is an actual 15th-century accent. It's started to come back in fashion now in Britain, especially in theatre circles. You can see plenty of Shakespeare performances in the actual language spoken by Shakespeare now. Of course, it's just the accent and not the language in this film. I doubt a lot of people would be able to interpret Old English by ear.

I have been a fan of Taron's for awhile, and Robin Hood is a guilty pleasure but I know this movie has flaws. And when I saw the training montage my first thought was what you said, I had seen the same thing in Arrow, it was shot so similarly and had the same style of training. Surprised no jokes about how they literally called him "The Hood" or that Will Scarlet is played by Jamie Dornan from 50 shades of Grey... or even typecasting him as a sheriff thanks to OUAT And I think that spoon line is the one that I have quoted the most from Alan Rickman

Seriously, why does everyone pick the retconned 'oh he was a noble all along so don't get any ideas commoners' backstory for Robin in adaptations? In the original stories, he was always a commoner who got fed up with the corruption of the class system, it was just one guy (Joseph Ritson) who said that he MIGHT have been aristocratic and everyone was like "well of course, those peasants don't have the right to protest the system, it was totally a nobleman policing other nobles and the feudal system was actually fine" and gave him a whole backstory as an earl which was complete bullshit and definitely not what Ritson intended, as he was a fervent critic of aristocracy who popularized Robin stealing from the rich to give to the poor.

"The class, charm, and social commentary of the book is completly absent" - Hmm, what book are you talking about E-Rod? There is no one book of Robin Hood. It's a folk tale that was recorded in many different ways over the centuries. The oldest ballad we have is from the 15th century, but there are mention of the figure in older works from the 13th and 14th centuries. Novels have been written about him as well, so I guess you are referencing one of those - but which one?
@carlrood44575 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this is yet another example of ERod being terrible at research and assuming whatever version he saw first is official. Go back and look at his review of Days of Future Past where he criticizes them using Wolverine to travel back in time instead of BISHOP!! That was the 90's cartoon. Bishop was about a decade from being created with Days of Future Past took place in the comics. His review of The Rock's Hercules movie used the Kevin Sorbo series as the official version.

Sorry...but Errol, Cary, Mr. Magoo, Disney and even Tom & Jerry have better Robin Hood movies than this. Realistic archery skills aside, the story makes zero sense. Robin became an outlaw after his father was framed for a crime he didn't commit. Infuriated, he shoots the man who would replace said father as the royal forester...but doesn't kill him. Thus, this action along with repeatedly hunting Prince John's "royal reserves" of deer in Sherwood puts him on the wanted list. This results into Robin Fitzooth fleeing into the forest and taking up the name Robin Hood. See, that is simple and compelling

Question: Why did they make Little John black in this movie? I don’t recall any mention of race in any of the Robin Hood stories I’ve read. And they also don’t call him ‘Little John’. Also, why is Will Scarlett is a bad guy by the end of the movie?
@morphman865 жыл бұрын
This film was all action, no story. Just as the story was beginning, the film ended. I mean, seriously, what happened in this film? Robin goes to war, where he sees the atrocities made in the name of his king. He returns, only to find his name has been sullied and his title removed and his wife married to someone else. He hears of a plot to divert war funds to the enemy, immediately goes to the man co-conspiring with the big bad guy, kills him, gets his wife back and the big baddie recruits Robin's old friend to be the new henchman. The end! Does that sound like a satisfying story, with a buildup, struggle and conclusion? Or a justification for action scenes from start to finish? They WISH they ripped off Michael Bay, but Bay at least know to put enough story in to reach the conclusion.
