Good blocking tactics, appreciate it! I just want to say, that I’m not using blocks so often, but when I use them I usually use the first block you mentioned, it’s probably the best. My tactic then is just to make some blocks and then change to attack when the ball comes right and the opponent doesn’t expect it. mostly a backhand loop or forehand topspin attack. :)

The thing about these videos -- and I think it's probably inevitable -- is there's very little that these people who have spent years perfecting these specific, minute movements can actually say to teach you to do it like they do. They can make it look easy, but the reality is that none of it will be easy for you unless you're already well practiced and fundamentally quite solid.

Hey, I think that you should create a new video as a part 2 to this, Tom. You need to tell people what they have to do with their feet immediately after each of these styles of blocks. It's incredibly important. You know this firsthand since those particular foot movements after blocks are a huge thing holding your level of play back. I actually think it's more important to teach TT players how to think about their next actions as soon as they finish each shot. It's where every single player on earth falters at multiple points in every single match. The higher the level, the less faltering there is. But, it's never NONE for anyone. And clearly, there's a major correlation between level of play and footwork. And as you look deeper into it, you find that footwork IS partial causation for level of play. So, since you struggle with the exact thing I'm talking about, why not make a part 2 to this and help the TT playing world out + practice something you should currently be working on personally, and kill two birds with one stone?

Excellent! I like to use it, especially unexpected, quickly off the bounce. Might I add another? To target the opponent's transition point, especially if pen holder. My Chinese friends referred to it an an "embarrassing point"!
@TomLodziak6 жыл бұрын
Yes agreed, the crossover is another very good position to block to, especially if you block fast.
@Hin-yi6gw6 жыл бұрын
In addition to the slow block, to slow down the speed even more we can move the bat towards our body right before in contact with the ball, imagine touching something hot and move away as soon as we touched it. This technique is called "吸" in Chinese TT and is translated into "suck", like sucking the ball towards you... you get the idea.
@TomLodziak6 жыл бұрын
Yes - that's a good blocking variation too. I do it every now and again but didn't know what to call it. But now I will call it the suck shot!

how can you apply the 1st tactic you mentioned with spins comming to your paddle, the ball will only change direction? Are you assuming the ball is coming without any spin ?
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter how much topspin your opponent uses, you can still change the direction of the the block by angling your racket.
@Redwane-Music Жыл бұрын
@@TomLodziak That's right and there is not only topspin. isn't it then worth mentioning how to deal with each one? because what you are showing in this video will not always work without taking into consideration how the ball is coming or does it ?

when should i do forehand or backhand and when is it a good idea to Block?
@TomLodziak6 жыл бұрын
If a player is attacking you with topspin, then you can play a block shot. In general, you block with the backhand, when ball is played to backhand side and block with forehand when ball is played to the forehand side. But sometimes I like to block with the backhand when ball is in the middle of the table.

Tom, I have noticed the bats have a red / black side to them. Does it make any difference which side you use ?
@stealthyluke95 жыл бұрын
They are red and black so, according to the ITTF rules, your opponent can know which side of the bat you are using to hit the ball (so they can counter it accordingly). Normally people use different types of rubbers on the sides of the bat, but if you use the same rubber, it's a very, very small difference that can't even be noticed. I read it somewhere that, due to the pigments, the black side makes the ball spinnier and the red side makes the ball go faster.

Coach, am I right that switch block or fast block are most commonly used in the cross over area where you cannot execute the FH or BH topspin?
@TomLodziak6 жыл бұрын
Switch block is mostly played to the wide BH or wide FH. The fast block can be very effective when played to the crossover area, as the other player has very little time to reach and move into position.
