100% agree. Environment and pressure is most important. Before coming to China, I couldn't even say numbers. Even in my current city, I didn't learn a lot because I had friends and co-workers to translate for me. I learned the fundamentals of Chinese when I traveled alone to Xiamen island. I was forced to communicate. In that one week, I learned more than the 2 months in my current city.
We Chinese have heard of "English corner" ever since primary school. I really hope westerners can at least learn an oriental language like Chinese or Japanese from young and be a bilingual, because language doesn't serve as a tool only, but also implants an aspect of thinking/logic. Vise versa,It's also important for Chinese/Japanese to pick up a western language like English or French.

That meetup looked like fun and it’s such a great idea to stay on top of the language you are learning, or to keep it fresh and not lose what you’ve already learned. I grew up speaking it but never developed a larger vocabulary despite many years of Chinese school. Once my mom stopped sending us, I quickly forgot how to read and write all that I learned. I have no problem with pronunciation, just need to build vocabulary so I’ve been watching a lot of KZbinrs that speak Chinese. 😁

I've recently started to have to go through partial to full days with using a mix of messed up vocal noises (from my body), jacked up sign language, even more jacked up "miming" and using my text to speech (speech assistant) app on either my phone or tablet because of how sore and inflamed my airway and vocal cords get. Yes, I have CFS/ME (a very bad cross of issues with my body using energy and inflammatory processes chronic illness). Life isn't fun. At least with (willingly) only speaking Chinese for a day, you can still get your point across with actual words.
