Iirc, we also used to have another word for “bear” in proto-Germanic, but there was a taboo around using it in case it, like, summoned a bear, so the word that became “bear” in so many Germanic languages was essentially a Voldemort-style nickname meaning something like “the brown one” or “wild animal” (depending on which etymologist you side with).

To answer Sam’s question about why one type of circulatory system would be advantageous over the other: It usually depends on the size of the organism, and how permeable its insides are. Bugs are tiny little guys, so their organ tissue is thin enough that the oxygen and stuff that’s carried in hemolymph can diffuse right into the organ it belongs in. Because humans (and other vertebrates) tend to be bigger than inverts, our organs have thicker walls. To get enough blood to pass through the body with enough speed, and to carry it where it needs to go, vessels are useful. And capillaries help to diffuse the blood.

This is a great way to put it! I was trying to write an explanation but it was too complex and had too many technical terms. You explained it neatly and in a way that's super accessible even for people without a background in biology.
@DavidDylanFisher24 күн бұрын
It's closely related to why bugs generally have what are called trachae rather than lungs: branching holes in their surface that allows passive gas exchange. It's fine for little bitty creatures (some little frogs can breathe through their skin as well) or, when oxygen levels were higher in epochs past, not so itty bitty bugs, but bigger creatures need a more efficient system for gas exchange. A lot of questions about biomechanics come down to square/cube laws. As a creature gets bigger, its flesh, and thus its need for oxygen, nutrition, waste elimination, etc. are increasing in three dimensions. But chemical exchange has to occur through some surface, a membrane of some kind (like the membrane of the alveoli in your lungs) and those surfaces are only increasing in two dimensions.

Blodplättar (blood pancakes) is made throughout Scandinavia, made with reindeer blood and topped with lingonberries. Cute fact: blodplättar is also the word for blood platelets. Just little pancakes floating around your arteries.😊

So, we’ve lost the original names for both bears and blood? I wonder what other names have been lost to time from our ancestors being afraid of evoking something magical and/or frightening.
@DasDuken2 жыл бұрын
We still have the original term for bear! It survived in various related languages as "ursus", "arktos", etc., which is part of why the specific name of the brown bear is Ursus arctos, both terms meaning "bear". Bear bear. The bear-iest of bears.

Re: 44:15 and IVs - when I was 17 I got my appendix taken out and I had an IV drip before surgery. In an effort to assuage my perceived fears of an existing needle, a nurse grabbed my arm and moved it to show me that there wasn't a piece of rigid metal in my arm. Unfortunately, I hadn't been moving my arm because the injection site *really really* hurt. Using my arm at all was very painful. And becuase I got little bitty veins they had to use my dominant arm, and I'm an artist. So I was very bored in hospital. Anyway.

21:09 Splenunculi That's so interesting for a number of reasons obviously, but one of them is that the first thing that popped into my head was Homunculi because that's the only time I've seen that suffix used before which makes sense with the available context clues (little human, little spleen) so I went and looked up -unculi or -unculus and It's indeed a diminutive. Just making a mental note of this for later. Knowing your latin roots at least a bit is nice because you can guess what a lot of science words mean pretty accurately and at least be in the ball park on most of them. Thanks for being a huge nerd and teaching me this stuff mom lol.

As someone who's not a linguist but finds it extremely interesting, there's actually a thing where, because of word taboo (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_taboo), a word for something considered taboo (lol) is replaced by the euphemism for it, until it becomes the new word. I think it's called taboo-motivated linguistic replacement or something? The Wikipedia link probably has something about that but idk.

The german word for blood is "Blut". It might come from the word "Blót" which was an old norse tradition in which prisoners were sacrificed in some sort of "blood ritual".
