I know, same here. Lance teased a massive video years ago about "Upsidedown Byrgenwerth." Still waiting! But I understand the delay it's probably a lot of work and Lance prefers to present material fully and proper.

Damn, for a moment when I saw the thumbnail I thought this was a video about that mysterious trapdoor in Byrgenwerth. It still creeps me out each time I see it. Even if it's just there for aesthetic reasons, I still really want to see what horrors lurk under there.

It's so interesting to me how the paths changed entirely to solve a problem with loading textures. It was a very clever idea to put a room that forced players to stop and explore to allow the game a chance to finish loading. It makes me wonder how many other places changed over the course of development due to similar problems?

The chance to explore likely isn't part of the solution to the technical issues, since you can still choose not to and sprint through, but the ladder for sure slows things down and makes them more consistent. I imagine they had an idea for including more information anyway, and since they needed to redesign some of this high traffic path anyway they decided to put more stuff here.

In my opinion: Bloodborne was their new entry into ps4 gen and it make sense that bb and ds3 has many loading zones and texture poppings, since they were updating the engine while also developing their games. I wonder what their first ps5 game would look like ?!

I agree with ​@@Cethinn, although the room might helped, I believe it was also a conscient decision to add the library. If rooms were added only for performance, we would see less content from FromSoftware games in more modern hardware, like Sekiro and Elden Ring. But they are still packed with content, even more so, I would say

I'm sad the current gen still hasn't fully kicked in. SSDs becoming standard will fundamentally change how level design works. I always found this little segment a bit weird in the game, same with that pointless cutscene when you enter the Chapel, but it all makes sense now. People often mention the stereotypical tight spaces and caves to hide loadings, but this video shows how subtle these things can be. Imagine how many nooks and crannies and enemy encounters were slightly altered to accommodate loading limitations.

This was very interesting to watch. I liked the stone textures of the preliminary library design. And as intended, I stopped in the library and looked around the first time I got there. I assume the cutscene for the chapel also helped with this problem. I think the second note about Old Yharnam could have been kept to nudge the player along the expectation of multiple paths in Cathedral Ward, but I guess they replaced it by having Gehrman send the player to the “valley hamlet”. That instruction was vague to me the first time, but I eventually figured it out. I guess the cryptic nature of what he says helps add to the mystery.

Sometimes things we love are improved by limitations. Usually things we hate happen because of deadlines too soon. BB seems to have been in the perfect position. Still waiting for that PC release though...

I always thought this little area was extremely strange. To have to climb down a ladder to get to the cemetery from the chapel seems like a failure on the architects. I think they should have gone for an elevator instead of having a giant gate blocking a room with a ladder in it.

Same thing probably happened with the path after Dancer of the boreal valley where instead of a path we saw in the alpha version, they included a ladder instead, which is bizarre way to construct a path to a castle where nobles of Lothric live.

Realistically, it probably would been more stairs, given that it was more convenient due to the pathway leading to a cemetery. An elevator would be too cumbersome, and really slow the process if one was considered. Imagine if the building caught aflame, and your only escape exit was hindered by an elevator.

If the whole point of the room was to slightly slow down the player, i like the addition of a chest so close to the critical path that it's impossible *not* to get the prompt to open it. It's like a set of jangling keys forcing the player into the opening animation

I doubt it works, but when you mentioned the first version of the network test had a key named “great bridge key” I couldn’t help but think about the “closed.” door that definitely leads to cleric beast from the other side. IF by some miracle it does actually open that door in that version, or perhaps an even earlierrrrrr build. It would totally make sense why it got repurposed, and the other path was scrapped, because literally nobody is remembering to go back to that area and try that key on that door BEFORE trying the lever in gascoigne’s room, which consumes the key.

In builds where you can open that door, it doesn’t need a key. It’s just a normal “does not open from this side” door. You can open it from the other side.

So, those gigantic infinite ladders that takes you from forbidden woods poison cave to the clinic, I imagine they are there to slow down the player and load and unload areas? It would make sense now, because those ladders are not fun and usually From makes fun stuff.

Huh, I guess that partially explains why the way into Oedon Chapel is a ladder as opposed to something a bit more ceremonial looking, like the winding stairway. Always thought it was weird, logically speaking, that there's a big gate you need a key for, which then leads to... a sewer/drainage room? And then a ladder up to a small library, which then leads into the actual chapel itself.

Really cool. I had always assumed the initial pushing the door open to Cath Ward was used in order to load the area. Interesting how it went through a few iterations prior to release. Then you think about the literal Great Bridge door behind Cleric Beast which leads to the Ward and you wonder what exactly was the first plan?

Maybe the Underground Library used to be in the trap door in Byrgenwerth. It would makes sense since the note speaks of Rom. They could have moved the room over to Oedon to fix the loading issue and thats why the trap door remains inaccessable.

I found that you can walk from Ieosefka's Clinic all the way to Advent Plaza (The One Reborn). If they needed to save processing power, they could have changed this, since you never ever actually need to walk this path directly.

That ladder and path always seemed awkward to me - a graveyard accesible from the chapel only through a sewer and a ladder. Now I can see why 😂

I think I'm going to cry. Don't get me wrong I'm really happy to see a new upload and greatly appreciate your work, but I desperately need an answer to one of your earlier videos hinting at a connection between the lecture hall and the unopenable byrgenwerth ladder door. It's been bugging me for years. :( It seems hard to believe the ladder leads to the lecture hall, apart from there not being a corrisponding entrance in the lecture hall, the lecture hall has windows, and it makes no sense for an underground structure to have windows. I always wondered if maybe the lecture hall previously stood in the waking world where rom is in the present. It would explain why the bridge just drops off and perhaps. why the lecture hall is physically close to it in world coordinates. The doors to the lecture hall are also about the same width as the bridge. See how obsessed I am? I need to know :(

I think you can clearly see how Bloodborne was one of the most From Softwares polished games pretty much by how close the retail version is similar to alpha version. The games like DS2 or DS3 were pretty much changed 180 degrees from their original idea due to development issues and hence they ended up not being so good despite what people think.
