Crash Thompson this was a big hit here in the U.K. Song still gets played out in bars and clubs as far as I know. Not surprising it was top ten all over Europe considering its a massive pastiche of 80s euro-dance. I reckon it owes a specific debt to “boys” by Sabrina. Also There’s one hell of a weird through-line as I mostly know that sampled pet shop boys song as the theme tune to the BBC’s “The Clothes Show” - clips on YT of that should show you why it’s weird to go from that to BHG in 2 steps 🤣
@kylejones82894 жыл бұрын
@@CrashThompson He just covered "I Melt With You" which did even worse than this did on the charts, as well as "Mexican Radio" which was comparable to this in terms of chart success. And he covered bands that had minor hits after the first one that just aren't very well remembered, like Falco and Men Without Hats. He probably would count this, but it does technically break a lot of his rules, although he's broken those rules before, and he has refused to cover acts like Modest Mouse and Dropkick Murphys that technically meet his rules but that he doesn't feel are one hit wonders in spirit (and I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't do an episode on Jimmy Hendrix despite the fact that Jimmy Hendrix technically meets his general rules). I think that he would be willing to do it especially if he became broke again and did Patreon requests, but who knows.

One thing worth noting about The Ballad of Chasey Lain - it's immediately followed by an interlude where Chasey Lain herself quips about how she'd rather do all sorts of horrible things to herself than take the guy up on his offer. So, I'm fairly certain she was in on the joke. Great video, BTW.

Mope is literally nothing but samples. Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls main riff, "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and even a Homer Simpson sample of him yelling HOLY MACARONI ...which it something that, I must admit, they were REALLY years ahead of their time, it wouldn't sound too far off from what music mashups usually are on our internet age nowadays
@xandersthoughts4 жыл бұрын
"Mope" might be their most pro-ironic post-modern meme shitpost of a song, and an expensive one at that. Sampling "Rock Me Amadeus," Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Metallica, the Pac-Man theme, and a Simpsons quote, I'm sure their label wasn't too pleased with those royalty payouts. This is the end result of a brief deep dive into... whatever this band is. And I've heard this song on the rock radio station here where I live for about 15 years, never knew who did it or the name of the song until this video. That's when I went "OHHHHHHHHHhhhhh that's who did it" so thank you Crash. I think?

It’s almost-certainly true. Stan is a carbon copy of Chasey Lane, somehow taken even further. I mean, it just seems so unlikely that two Whiteboy rappers would suddenly choose to do obsessive fan picaresque narratives at the same time. And you gotta realize that, strange as it may seem, before Eminem hit, Bloodhound Gang probably represented the Commerical high watermark of Whiteboy rap. This was all juuuuust before Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. (You could throw ICP into the mix, but I don’t think They count, even though Eminem fairly-famously was obsessed with them too). Plus, go check out Real Slim Shady, he’s aping Bloodhound Gang’s sense of humor and ratatat-pop-culture-references-over-euro-beats formula to a tee.

I'm going to say this as a 99 HS Grad... Never did I listen to the boy or girl bands, I was at Warped Tour and listen to my Ska, Swing, Punk and Pop Punk music. The only thing I remember about this song is a fun, personal story... I want to say it was later 00's when a group of friends went to an open mic local karaoke run at a Chinese bar, maybe had about 80-90 patrons. My best friend requested this song, 20 minutes later went on stage, began singing this song, and then started humping the wall, then humping a speaker, doing something wrong with the mic, then doing a fully clothed Chippendale's hump of the ground with full-on cheering and laughing. That is when the owner ran out with a second mic going "Too sexy, too sexy... no more." Stopped the music and then said, "You are no longer allowed to sing this song." We were regulars at the time... but the first time he sang this song. I'll remember this song for that.

When somebody takes a sample and uses it like the way you described, by changing it, I think it shouldn't be called sample, it should be called adaptation. The best example that's always on my mind is Coldplay's Talk, which takes that sample from Kraftwerk's Computer Love, reworks it and makes it their own. What do you think?
@crazydud33804 жыл бұрын
To some extent, I definitely agree. The sam thing is generally true in Hollywood for good remakes versus bad remakes. The bad ones either just make the same movie again, or change it so much that they clear just used the name to sell tickets. The good ones, rare as they may be, still honor and respect the original, without attempting to replace it, while reinterpreting it into something unique. Remakes such as Carpenter's The Thing or Cronenberg's The Fly are excellent examples of this. A musical example could be Butterfly by Crazy Town. Come to think of it, they are similar to the Bloodhound Gang. Both are terrible, with one huge exception of a track where they absolutely rip!

Wow. What a spot on analysis of every facet of the bloodhound gang. You did a real bang up job on this one! I mean, I disagree slightly, I give them credit for _commenting_ on a lot of the grotesquery that you think they simply embody. But then, I also defended Neil LaBute for years only to be proven oh-so-wrong. So maybe I should give up the ghost. But then gotdayumn, Jimmy Pop can really flow and has the best deadpan delivery in pop music, this side of the also-mentioned Cake. And as for their inability to follow up The Bad Touch, I think a lot of that has to do with their truly massive success in Europe, where they headline arena festival shows to this day. There was no need to follow up The Bad Touch. There was more money - for a loooot less effort - in simply playing the “hits” to an adoring crowd of people who couldn’t possibly be getting the cultural references, even if the language barrier wasn’t an issue.

I listened to it, and it is exceptionally racist.

I wanna listen to Yellow Fever too just out of curiosity, but at the same time I'm afraid of what I'll hear

the song has also the same chord structure as New Order's True Faith.

i think it was the most overplayed song that i can remember back in the day, like an earworm from hell jeez, i couldn't stand it because of that. but after 20 years i can put it in the "it's alright"-category

I love this song but I think their back catalogue is crass, even for someone with a dark sense of humor like me. I’ll just stick to this lol.

“Crass” and “dark” do not mean the same thing,

While I have an especially soft spot for this song, there is one thing I’ll always remember regarding it. OK, I remember being shown an Abstinence DVD as Sex Ed in High School. That's growing up in Rural Louisiana for ya. The lady hosting it was (and still is) like an extra annoying pastiche of Roseanne Barr and Rosie O' Donnell with about a hundredth of the comedic talent. I distinctly remember her taking issue with the chorus of “The Bad Touch” of all things in the video we had to watch. But Not one word on the rest of the, arguably dirtier, lyrics. To this day, when I think of this song, I think of how ri-goddamn-diculous abstinence only education is.

I hate that “Like Apollo / Your Creed, my mission / You’re going down for the count / I count down, ignition” is maybe the cleverest turn of phrase I’ve ever heard in my life, and it’s a childish sex rhyme in a song where the last 40 seconds is gagging sounds, a man angrily yelling SUCK IT over and over, and then racism.
