Texas Stars Captain Curtis McKenzie imposes bloody consequences on Brandon Baddock after illegal hit to the head of Logan Stankoven.
Midway through the period IceHog veteran Brandon Baddock lit up Stankoven late and away from the play in what many would consider a dirty play and the Stars were incensed. every player that was on the ice at the time headed in his direction, led by the captain McKenzie and the offender turtled under the pile. Once the dust had settled, Baddock was hit with a five-minute major and the bloodied forward left the ice with a game misconduct. Rockford's Josh Healy was also hit with a roughing minor, as was McKenzie. A normally even-keeled Texas head coach Neil Graham had some choice words for Rockford's head coach Anders Sorensen to make his point clear about what he thought about Baddock's play

Honestly Baddock did intend to land a check but Stankoven turned at the last moment, after bobbling the puck. If he hadn’t mishandled the puck, he would have been in possession and probably also not turned head-first into a check, which to be fair he didn’t know was coming. I don’t see it as a late hit, Baddock’s weight transfer was already initiated as Stankoven turned. I rarely side with the player initiating a late / dirty / injurious hit but this one seems like it was relatively clean and just unfortunate circumstances. I’ve been on both the giving and receiving side of such hits, although as a beer league player obviously not nearly as brutal. However, the time the skate of my 280 lb teammate caught a rut and crushed me into the boards wasn’t too fun. Things happen fast on the ice.
@BigSnuff
@BigSnuff 4 ай бұрын
I agree with almost everything you said, feel like it could have been a hit to the head but it's hard to say with the angle we're looking at. Definitely not a late hit, he had the puck a quarter of a second earlier, people get hit 3+ seconds after they passed the puck all the time with no call even in the nhl.

If you come from "behind" so the player has no way to see you need too not check the players head. Yeah you need to protector yourself but eyes in the back? he cant tackled him from that position without being in the back. If you come that much "blind side" (from behind) you cant freaking go high and check the head. If you come from behind you cant have a elbow or shoulder so it will hit the head if any movments happen. I mean we demand that forward look around to protect himself. But if he turn his head he will get head check.. Cant have it both ways tbh. The way he laying almost total still after and hold his head is pretty evident that he checked the head... Or are we saying is he faking? I like tuff hockey. But if you turn your head to see if someone comes from behind.. You better be ready to get his head smacked. What should the forward do too see that coming or protect himself.

@chrisjones3791
@chrisjones3791 3 ай бұрын
That's not a dirty hit because the Stars player turned before he got hit. The blow wouldn't have been that bad if he didn't turn. The captain has to use a stick to defend his teammates and that's dirty. You use your fist because then you don't get a suspension. Stars captain should be suspended for 3 games for using the stick to the head area abd making the Hawks player bleed.

@@chrisjones3791 I think the Visor is what ultimately what cut him. But still agree no reason to jump him like that. Dude the puck was well away from the Stars player the hit was attempted. That’s interference and due to the power of the hit it was very dangerous interference. You can’t just commit interference against a young top prospect when you’re an older plug and expect not to get jumped. The hit was also the older and much larger player blindsiding the much younger and smaller player along with it again being interference.

Hits are one thing, but the outcome doesn't always look like it was clean, especially live. Players don't get the luxury of reviewing it like we can on KZbin. Hockey is fast, so much so that all one may see is the end result, in which case, cue that "Ready to Die" song.

Take into account the context. Baddock is 6'3, 218, and an AHL veteran at 28 with 0 points on the season. Here he takes out the Stars top prospect (and one of the top nhl prospects) Logan Stankoven who is 5'7, 170 and just 20 years old. He's also 2nd in AHL scoring with 41 points in 33 games. So while I agree that it isnt the dirtiest it and could be called questionable, you simply cannot allow this pure goon to start running your star players with no consequences. Next time he or somebody thinks of running Stank I bet they'll think twice. To put this into NHL context it would be like Ryan Reaves running Jack Hughes with a questionable hit; no way that doesnt warrant a response.

That was a clean hit Mckenzie should of gotten the gate for intent to injure the stars player got up and skated off the ice if it was a high hit he would've been down until training staff could come in to help
@f_homo-s

With the camera angle it’s impossible to tell whether or not the hit was high but you can 100% see that it was interference for sure. The guy lost the puck, took a stride to the left, and then turned and started skating back to the puck, and that’s when he got hit. It wasn’t borderline either, definitely late.

This is what self policing in hockey is supposed to look like- throw a dirty hit ends up with a destroyed face. Dude’s entire jaw looked like it got rearranged. These are when fights after hits are needed, not after clean ones.

@@yooowhatupribsWhere he hits him straight through the head with no chest contact at all? It's a horrible hit, doesn't matter that there's a height difference, you cannot headhunt and get away with it. If you think the rules are wrong that's one thing, but as they're written that's a literal textbook illegal hit. He could not have physically hit him any higher or he would've just jumped over him. If this isn't a headshot then there is no such thing.
