I know we Nigerians and Indians don't always get along. But don't think you were alone in this. Britain extracted a budget surplus from Nigeria every year since it inception as a colony and that surplus was then sent back to Britain, with only a small amount being sent back for development. The British destroyed our native textile industries by force and did the same in Egypt which was a major cotton producer. Extremely disappointed with Bloomberg using the terminology of British "extracted" $45 Trillion from India vs "looted" or "Stole." In India, British govt. would have signs in front of buildings saying "Dogs & Indian not allowed." British massacred thousands of unarmed Indians through police firing at a Park in India (jallianwala bagh massacre). During World War II, the famine-like conditions created by British by stealing resources from India to support the war led to about 3 million Indians dying at the time. I am a regular viewer of Bloomberg but this video really disappointed me.

Some problems with the video: 1. The point demanding reduction of import duty is rather unfounded because if you are an exporter, you already get 100% of the import duties/excise/GST that you paid as credit/refund. So, you never have to worry about it if you're planning on exporting anyways. 2. Tax disputes with Vodafone and Carin energy etc. predate the conception of whole Make in India project of government, and a lot of structural changes have been made since to ensure that things like that don't happen anymore. (Retrospective taxation as you mentioned) A lot of bureaucratic offices have become single window with multiple taxation and legislation compliance reforms since then, so hopefully it'll be better soon. 3. High tariffs are actually beneficial as they come into play only when companies want to capitalise in Indian market, and it's justified that you should have to pay for it. (Just like EV is given incentive to boost demand as an analogy and Carbon emissions taxed). Yes, that makes imported objects expensive for us before we can make them ourselves, but this is a fair compromise. 4. I don't know what happened with that undisclosed advertisement of "udan app" in the middle. It was a very weak point, with a small application with close to 0 effect, when instead you could have talked about role of Paytm-Phone pay / Jio is digitising the economy. Rest, the points with female participation and upskilling workforce are absolutely correct and should be paid much more attention towards. I would add one more point of improving hig level education standards via international collaborations and research facilities. Bringing some of NRIs back to teach as proffesors, and sending our kids in exchange programs will also have a significant role with big multiplier for economy as high-level research grows.

The biggest problem has been shown in your comment which is the problem with most of the Indians. Stop supporting increased tarrifs. Even Bangladesh is now showing F U to India. Because India is focussing on investments of high end products, tarrifs have to be near to zero. Relativity high tarrifs may work for low end manufacturing, but high end manufacturers who will invest tens of billions aren't going to waste thier money on shity tarrifs.

The biggest mistake India does is that economic planning is done by Indian business holders , politicians , religious leaders , socialists , ngos and other influential ppl in Indian economy which have lots of incentives to stop foreign companies from coming to India and not by economic experts which comprise both who are currently in Indian economy and by foreigners who want to make money in India , the fact that India's trade within south Asia is so low shows who make economic decision.

There is a book, "The Silent Coup: A History of India's Deep State" I would recommend you read this once. Just take a blank recommendation, and I'm sure your perspective will change. Politicians are just the front faces, who want to remain in power and do whatever it takes to keep them in power. Counter to common belief, Manmohan Singh actually made his own policies, since 1991, and the reason most people understand him as weak / puppet is because his modus operandi was in contradiction to his own party line. Also, if you think views of enough 'economists' aren't taken into consideration, you're definitely barking under the wrong tree, because there are so many groupings of such economists in the upper echelon of power in India already, now it's besides the point that they don't agree with each other for most part. In my opinion, too many economists and too little vision/science/reasoning is the problem. There are four main points for rapid industrialization from South Korea, Taiwan to China. First, land reform, allowing each farmer to own his own land, and planning a large amount of industrial land. Second, efficient governments, including Japan, are basically defined as centralized governments. Third, universal compulsory education is not beneficial to a large population. Only young people with a certain degree of education are the skilled workers in need. Fourth, long-term development plan. These four points have a long way to go for India.

Answer is no. Unlike China, India did not have a high level of educated people & this was the main reason why it has taken India so long to move up in the world. For eg they didn’t believe in educating women though this mindset has changed over the years India’s infrastructure is also terrible.
