AI is a broad technology. It has applications in many industry sectors including medicine, transportation, military, communications, energy and many more. US may be more advanced in some areas, but it is clearly years behind in implementation in areas such as self driving cars, facial recognition and factory robotics. As US falls further behind in its 5G implementations, it will further hamper the usage of AI in remote medical surgery, self driving cars and to a certain extent the military.

USA is already lagging behind in some areas and China is driving more in the AI technology rather than the usa. Americans vastly under-fund education and have very low academic standards. When I retired from designing computers and operating systems, and teaching technology to engineers all over the world, I thought about teaching high school. I discovered I would take an 80% cut in pay, most of the students would be unprepared and many hostile to learning. I decided to just do occasional consulting instead for people who understand my value. If Americans wants a future, education MUST be funded and parents MUST value education. To see just how little Americans value science just look at all the Americans that are anti-vax or think Trump didn't lose.
