My dad had a 2wd ClubCab in green (of course) that I converted to an automatic for him in the 80's. It was a nice truck, albeit with probably the only B&M StarShifter equipped A904 in existence. Great old 318, never missed a beat. I'd love to have that truck back now. Better yet, I'd love to have *him* back now, come to think of it. - Ed on the Ridge

'80? Meh. '81-'85 not too great but Lone Wolf McQuade had one so they CAN'T be bad! '86-'90 OK. '91-'93 tied with '74-'76 for me but I like the REST of the body a lot better. @DeadDodgeGarage Yeah, that helps. I like to find a First Gen Cummins "shell" that someone robbed the engine out, of and swap the master cylinder and axles out. Even the early 3:08 gears work well with the manual transmission if you don't put giant tires on it. Plus, you can't hardly break anything with a sock V-8, NP 205 and Dana 60 and 70 combination. A big block, 4 speed and 3:08 gears give a good cruising speed. I'm not a rock crawler so the 1.96:1 gear reduction is totally adequate.

I recommend Club Cab for my patients that chew gum and drive first gen Dodges and are over 5 ft 8 since the bench seats are bolt upright in the standard cab version to try to make up for the lack of length of the cab. For Second Gen Dodge pickups,, standard cab is fine.

Oh, the steering wheel back in those days was so big in diameter, I put on a Grant wheel with adapter. The factory wheels were big for people that might possibly buy the truck with manual steering. I have a factory steering column can for factory Tuff wheel, rim blow, or E body two spoke but the can won't fit on W series steering columns. Normally, I avoid aftermarket "kitsch" car parts. I notice you had the factory wheel on your 70 Satellite. The same one that came on my 70 GTX. Not a bad looking wheel, though the horn button sections doesn't stay tight, but the diameter was more than I wanted. I put on my can and used the three wheels mentioned above.

We looked at the swap mounts and they were essentially the same as what we had, but with another slot further back for a different style frame. We needed the forward slot. An older lady acquaintance showed me her 2018 Ram ProMaster, which is an American version of a European delivery van. That is, Fiat. She likes it because it has room for her big dogs in the back. But I had never seen or heard of it. She didn't even know if it was front wheel drive (it is). It has a Chrysler V6, the same one you got in a Challenger, that has 280 hp net. The same as my first and all time favorite Mopar, the 72 Road Runner GTX. That's kind of humbling. So, I'd like to see you get a hold one of those and wring it out. It doesn't have a lot of style , so I have to guess five year old ones aren't in much demand. There are heavier duty versions with taller roofs and longer wheel bases, but I'd bet even the smallest one would at least match in capacity , say , an old B series van and even the strongest of the Voyager and Town and Country mini vans.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 ай бұрын
I personally think the ProMaster is hideous… but I do really like the V6. I have been trying really hard not to buy a 2018 V6 Challenger at my local used lot.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I read that you thought that the ProMaster is "hilarious" and I thought you put your finger right on it, and agreed, but then I saw I'd read it wrong. I totally agree on the Challenger being hard to resist. I live in so cal, so they are not affordable in any trim level, though. I dream of having a big tire small wheel Challenger. No 20in's for me. 20's. What were they thinking??? I once commented on a C body board "The Crossfire is so cool, I'd get one even without an engine." "Spoken like a true C Body guy." was one response.

Regarding the transmission on this truck, you said MP435 and the word unsynchronized. What does MP stand for and synchronization in the transmission? I've heard of the word syncro but I don't know what it means please elaborate with me if u have time someday . I know nothing about transfer cases .
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 26 күн бұрын
NP = New Process. This was an outside company that build transmissions used by Chrysler for many years. They later became New Venture - hence transmissions like the NV4500, used by Chrysler, but other manufacturers too. Synchronized gears are meshed together and shifted through a separate collar and tooth assembly that uses a brass ring in the middle to *synchronize* the speed between the different components, and is what gives us nice smooth shifts in modern manual transmissions. Back in the bad old days, transmissions were non synchronized, and required techniques like double clutching or rev matching to shift. In these and other transmissions, the forward gears other than first are synchronized, but the “granny low” first gear is not. Reverse is almost never synchronized.

Every 435 truck I have owned I would start in 2nd under normal driving. I don't know the engines history but have had thrust bearing issues causing noise from crank walk when depressing the clutch
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 10 ай бұрын
Crank walk is what I was checking for with that camera shot. I didn’t see anything discernible so I moved on. I’ve had super worn thrust bearings that didn’t make that kind of sound. I used to always take off in first with the 435. It seemed to me that less clutch slip was better. But I got over that eventually. The other factor is that the two trucks I had were powered by a super worn out 360 and a crappy running slant. With this torquey 383 and whatever rear end is in this thing, first is entirely useless.

What are the two pieces of 2 inch angle iron underneath the core support on the bottom of the frame turn on inside of the frame rails and they got one hole in them I got the same truck I'm wondering what the heck they're for

@@drade1820 I agree. Gotta be able to do 80mph in the slow lane to keep up on the freeway in WA nowadays. There is no slower secondary highway parallel to I-5 from north of Vancouver to near Olympia like Hwy 99 is in Oregon.

No return spring on clutch pedal? That 360 was well done.

It has the fork return spring but no over center. It’s got a diaphragm clutch so it shouldn’t need one.

If you can fab or buy a taller passenger mount it'll solve the fan and header issues
@DeadDodgeGarage

It would take a lot to get us clear of the driveshaft. Like… a lot. And then even if we’re clear of it at rest, at suspension compression we’d be back in it. But I do think we could get the fan centered there with some shimming. I’m sure Dave will be looking at that.

Did you go with headers because you didn't have the stock exhaust manifolds?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 10 ай бұрын
No it’s way dumber than that. We had stock manifolds and he started to put them on, but he said he wanted to run headers and I had a set, plus the bolt on mufflers. So then we bought Remflex gaskets and put a bunch of time and effort into learning the hard way that they are the wrong headers.

It was the whole motor that was moving, if you watch the block while you rev it up it's moving.

Why did you say the 383 is an easier fit than a 440 ? Aren't they basically the same block with deck height exception. I thought they would both fit the same. Please elaborate.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 10 ай бұрын
The lower deck height means the 383 is shorter vertically, the valve covers are closer to the crankshaft, and the engine is also narrower overall. The brake booster interference problem is therefore much worse on a 440. In a car, the simple act of changing spark plugs is much easier on the 383 because you can get around the engine more easily. To me it’s just a nicer package overall.
