One other thing about blowouts, especially on Airstreams: we once had a blowout occur on the rear left tire. The blowout was large it destroyed our water heater and blew the sewer cap off while on the highway with no shoulder to pull over on. I won't get into the shitty details, but an ounce of prevention is worth miles of a headache free journey.

My buddy owns a tire shop and is an avid camper. The one thing he always reminds me about when checking the tires is don't forget the spare... always check it the age, the air pressure and so on because well it just makes sense.

Last summer my sister and her husband were joining us at a campground which was about 3 hours from their home. They were just beginning a long trip (2700 km) to North of Superior. They seemed to be late in arrival, and we wondered what was taking them so long. Finally then informed us that they had blown a tire about an hour from the campground. They got the spare put on, and continued. They went to the nearest city (1 hour away) and bought a new tire. Several days later they continued our their trip. Before they got to their next campground the other tire blew. The ended up replacing all their tires, including spare. Our trailer is now 10 years old, so before starting out this summer for our first major trip, I am replacing all our tires. Your video give great advise!!

I buy Michelin Tires after the OEM Tires that come on the SUV or Truck! I am glad to hear they are good for ten years! Some of the other brands I do not trust on our Ford Expedition Suv 2015, and our sons 2016 , F150!

Well, Michelin claims their lifespan can last up to 10 years. With that said, the company recommends ongoing inspection after they are five years of age. As you will see in one of our upcoming videos, I think it makes sense to change the tires after five or six years if there are any questions about their durability. I firmly believe that Michelin makes the best tires, but all tires do have a lifespan, and will eventually fail.

We check out travel trailer before every trip, upon arrival at our destination and before we leave. We bought a Longacre gauge that is actually more accurate than the tire pressure monitoring system that came installed on our Micro Lite. We never wrapped out tires, but we do treat them with an "Aerospace UV protectant". Great video!

My Michelin tire was 6 years old and it had internal delimitation and it bounced so hard that my refrigerator cabinet came off the wall in my 19’ Airstream and broke open the striker on the entrance door at 70mph and created a terrible dent. You're 100% correct about a Tire Minder system. Last year I was running northbound on I-75 from Tampa to Americus GA when things went sideways with no warning. I had checked the tire pressures on my trailer and the truck before pulling out and they were all at the recommended pressures. About 300 miles into the trip it felt like I ran over a piece of PVC on the interstate. Nothing major, just a little bump. Almost 10 miles later I saw pieces of one of the left tires from my trailer flying off. When I pulled over I found that the shredding tire had caused significant damage to the wheel well. For a tandem axle trailer it may not be immediately obvious that a tire has blown. Since that trip I've installed a Tire Minder system and see it as just another layer of insurance. Another great video! The manufacturer’s stamped production date appears to be a newer topic for alot of folks. I shared this tire manufactured date with my maintenance guys, and next time I came in, they showed me a brand new SOB trailer with a SEVEN year old tire. Fortunately, the dealer agreed to replace that tire. When I call Discount Tire to replace my F250’s tires, I told them I wanted tires that were no older than 6 months, and received a little pushback, since it would take a couple of days to get all four tires within that manufacturing window. I waited and very happy with the product.

TOOK your advice from last year. Bought a extra water pump turned it into a transfer pump for our water bladder. Like to travel light. Get water when I get someplace if possible I think we have that, in common sleeping with a air pressure checker.

We’ve watched your old videos so you can ignore me if you’re thinking, “Woman, I already covered that!” Or…….boondocking in the Airstream in extreme cold. We live in N. Cackalacky so getting away from the disgusting heat is more ideal for us than hot weather camping. 🥵

All five hacks here are excellent. I will add a bit of commentary here from an experienced RV’r and aircraft mechanic with 45 years of experience. Tires just parked on your vehicle or in storage unmounted are wearing everyday that goes by. Extreme temperatures hot and cold, atmospheric quality, UV light exposure, contact with various parking surfaces all play a roll equal to or surpassing road wear. There is no way an automotive tire, light truck tire, or RV tire should be in service anywhere near 10 years. If you are able to store your vehicle or RV in a climate controlled garage with weight off the wheels you might extend tire life to maybe 4 years. I live in the desert southwest. Just the extreme high ambient temperatures ruins rubber and plastics over time even when shaded. An un-air conditioned garage here is like an oven cooking your tires daily in storage. Tires parked on gravel, dirt, grass while parked will absorb humidity. Medium duty and heavy duty tires used on medium and heavy duty trucks/RV chassises are far stronger in construction as they must support more weight. However they too are subject to the same factors that deteriorate them over time parked or rolling. I considered all these factors when storing my 5th wheel to arrive at a conclusion that I would not let any tire on my rig exceed three years in age. My rule of thumb is at four years it is like rolling dice that one will suffer a catastrophic failure with all the potential nasty implications of such.

Yes, I believe so. I believe the truck tires are of much better build quality than trailer tires. If you browse the comments, here, you will discover people who have had trailer tires fail after only two or three years. I think you will get much more life out of truck tires, but all tires have a lifespan and LT will eventually fail too. 🛞

Rv Tires were 7 years old..Told my wife…after this next trip I’ll get new tires for the RV. The morning of the trip we took off at 3am to get an early start. By 4:30 am the passenger side rear tire of the RV was in thousands of pieces but didn’t see it in the dark. To make matters worse, as the tire came apart it slapped the valve stem of the tire in front of it so that tire lost air too. Long story short. It’s pays to check/care for the tires. Mine now get replaced every 6 years. Learned my lesson.

Is that your Porsche, it's beautiful. The thing I like about my Tire Minder is that it tells you the temperature as well. This can let you know if a wheel bearing is heating up and about to fail. Before I had the TM I would feel the rims every time I stopped. Also, my TM has the app on my phone. If your tire get to hot or to low on pressure it will set off an alert to tell you. You don't have to watch it all the time.

Did Christi roll her eyes while you were making this video? This was some good information on tires. I have had 2 blow outs on brand new RV tires that came on the RV when I bought it. They were only a year old. I checked the tire pressures before going on any trips. The damage caused by the tires is worse than the cost of the tires. Broken jack wiring, sheetmetal damage and the plastic fender that goes on the sheetmetal panel which I can not find even though the RV is a new Fifth wheel. I use your link every time I Amazon shop. I have the same type of axle you do made by dexter. I have had the ramp that you used but when i got the trailer knowing how the axles work i called dexter and ask they said No do not use the ramp on those axles it will put stress on the axle. So i dont. Just tbought i would let you know

You guys should do a video on if a tornado hits an RV park. Recently in Ohio one ripped through a campground and killed 3 people, near Columbus. Naturally one should seek shelter, but not all parks are built the same. And some individuals can find themselves in RVs without a vehicle (say a spouse of a traveling nurse that uses the tow vehicle to get to work).

Ground level ozone pollution is also really bad for tires. Here in Baton Rouge , it’s gotten much better since the 1980’s but tires in the city still impacted more than If they were out in the country, with less ozone.

For motorhomes, forget the expensive "RV" tires. Instead, get Bridgestone Commercial truck tires. For the same size, they have a much higher belt and load rating, and they wear like iron. You can get them in all-position, and traction lug for the drives. The traction lugs are a bit noisier at highway speeds... but the tread is 29/32 of an inch. If you do any boondocking, you will appreciate the extra traction they give you. Plus, you are NEVER going to have to replace them!!! Also, invest in a set of Cross-Fire air equalizers for duals. They are available in many different PSI, and you can tell at a glance if the pressure is right... or too high or low. They equalize the load for both tires on roads that have a crown (they all have one).

@@rodbagley1686 A set of of them lasted 550,000 miles over seven years on the 34,000 pound capacity drives of my semi tractor with the Cross-Fires. And, they still had 4/32 to 5/32 left on them when I replaced them. How much does YOUR motorhome weigh??? Oh and, how many mile do YOU put on YOUR motorhome???!!! A fraction of 550,000 miles. So yes, you are NEVER going to need to replace them as long as you maintain them properly. Meaning, if you drive from Ohio to Texas... your tires will be overinflated in Texas because of the difference in temperature. Driving all over the country, I had to add or remove air from the tires almost DAILY. After 12,000 miles on my 34 foot motorhome... the traction lugs barely had the nubs wore off them.

We had a blow out in 2007 with NEW Goodyear tire and it tore a hole in the floor of our trailer. We do EVERYTHING you suggested and we had another blow out in 2023 and again it tore a hole in the floor of the same trailer 😖 strangely both times it was the passenger rear tire on the trailer 🤪(it’s a dowel axle) The point is that no matter how diligent you are, it can still happen with a defective tire 😩

It's a great question - unfortunately the only way to ensure you are getting "new stock" tires is to inspect the tires prior to installation and insist on the newest available. These days many "new" tires are already 1-3 years old when sold.

#6 rv tire hack., buy Commercial Trailer tires, not LT tires, Toyo and Yokohama tires have 10% more natural rubber, more belts on face and sidewall. Also get the narrowest tire for it will have more rubber on the face. The last is to inflate to max pressure. They will last 10 years easy.

In the summer months when part time RV families are on their vacations, especially the big diesel pickup tow rigs, Sometimes hubris kicks in, and old, overweight, under inflated, over-speed tires, and overheated on the sun-drenched asphalt and they disintegrate. Often doing extensive damage to the Trailer. In the warmer months especially starting around Memorial Day there will be a noticeable uptick in tire debris on the road. Waze “ object on the road “ warnings are essential for safe travel during this time. Some truckers refer to the tire carcasses on the road as “ gators” which initially confused me because in the spring, we also see road kill alligators.

When I was a kid we had a 33ft Apollo we shared with a bunch of relatives. It was probably 8 years old or so when we bought it. Shortly after we bought it we took it out for a family dinner about 45 miles to our west. We had at least 6 adults, and 4 kids in there. On the return trip the passenger front tire had the tread separate and it stripped off the wiring for all of the lights on that side. Our cousin was a Michelin dealer in New Orleans, and when we brought it to him to get it straight, that’s when we learned about tire age being more important than miles or tread depth on a motorhome. Back then a set of 6 new Michelin radials for that thing was around $1k . Unfortunately that experience colored the ladies’ impression of the rig which was pretty much top of the line , and their concern with every little issue, led to a sale and purchase of a southwind which practically disintegrated within a few months of the purchase. Man I miss that Apollo.

Thanks, and yes the new tires (Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S) were costly! I wasn't thrilled about spending the $ since the existing tires seemed fine, but once tires hit the 10-year mark I don't want to take any chances.

I have a freightliner. I checked the date codes before i buy. If under. than 1 year im good. Ill sell at 8 / 32nds . ( less likley to get debris in tire, causing a leak and failure.) I get paid to move. a service call can cost me Double what it would normally be. And if i miss an appointment my customer my go withbsomeone else. I tipically get just under half of what i paid for my tires I drive c in snow and above 6 /32nds keeps slush rain out of the treads. If i loose a steer tire in some rare cases it could destroy my hood and fenders. 10,000 for the hood alone. So i dont mind being pro active and havent had a tire issue in 25 years.... ps. A tire for my otr truck is 1,000 each plus labor. 6 tires 3 axels.

Just had new tires installed on my 2020 travel trailer that was made in 2019. I'm just too paranoid not to replace them before our trip from MD to FL. The irony of this is the new tire on my trailer is almost 2 years old since they were made. I was told that it doesn't matter since new tires are kept in the climate control warehouse... 😂

Good move keeping the tires up to date. And you raise an interesting point. A couple of years ago I got new tires put on a vintage vehicle of mine (an old 90s era BMW). I had a similar situation: the "new" tires were 3 years old when they were installed on my vehicle! While I concede that tires age ideally in a climate controlled environment, they are still aging.

@@LongLongHoneymoon in my case I believe SIZE DOES MATTER! My TT came with LT tires from Winnebago. They are some funky 235/75-15. I don't believe this is a popular size for PU trucks. I guess that's how you ended up with almost 2 year old new tires.🤔

Michelin literally stopped making them that size. I could've gotten a different brand but I wanted Michelin, so I settled on a slightly older tire.
