I bought a 3D Touch and couldn't get it to work out of the box - exactly the same behaviour as shown in the video here. Flashing red light (error mode), but if issued with a reset command, appeared to 'sense' correctly. This made me think that the issue was likely to be with the servo. I checked the contact points on the board where the two wires from the coil connect, with a multimeter and confimed the continuity of the coil, but was only able to get very intermittent connection with the multimeter. A quick 'dab' with my soldering iron to reflow the coil connection points on the board (very quick - as the coil wires are very thin and will burn out quickly if heat is applied for too long) and the servo is now working perfectly. I don't usually leave comments, but I hope this helps someone out. I'm guessing that this was exactly the same issue as the one shown in the video here - it's just I was going for a "can I diagnose an fix it" mentality, rather than "can I destroy it" as seen here!

Hey ben. New to 3d printing. I’m printing my First print now. With my ocd and newbie self. I spent an hour with a piece of paper and leveling bed for Ender 3. And you’ still don’t know if it’s almost perfect just acceptable. Now the wire that you soldered. Was it on the outside of the casing where the socket is or inside the device? This is more just in case. I seen your post was recent so maybe it’s a quality control issue.

That's probably the most idiotic comment ive ever read. It might cost $5 to manufacture, but you first gotta pay for the tooling to have it made as well as the means of distribution, advertising, and of course profit. Because without profit motive, none of these products you claim are made by thieves would ever even be invented. Have you ever stopped to consider how many products a company makes that turn out to be total failures vs how many actually sell? All of that factors in. Despite beeing a copy, those Clones work pretty much the same as the Original. I had both. But, I think Your Clones weren´t faulty, You just didn´t connect them correctly. There are 3.3V and 5V Versions AND Sometimes the Colors from the Wires do not Match the Original. So please when rewieving You should Rule that out first. In the End it seems to be just a rant and justification to buy the Original ones. I have now tested it at 3.3v. I scratched the little trace on the PCB to change it to 3.3v logic and it does the exact same behavior. The colors on the wiring loom match the BLTouch. Don't get me wrong, I know how to get this probe working. But to really get it to 100% functionality would require flashing the actual BLTouch firmware onto the probe. Which would require me to rewrite that code (I doubt AntClabs is sharing their source code, and I don't blame them). I'm not about to help some thieves in China sell knockoffs by teaching people how to get their broken product to work. Even I did, it's not worth your time to fight with the inferior product trying to get it to work. 3D printing has enough issues. Why give yourself more issues to deal with? The problem is that the original BLtouch is hideously overpriced. I mean, $40 is a lot to pay for a magnet, a coil and a PCB when a whole 3D printer costs just $230. Someone saw the opportunity to charge half the price and they did, and now they're raking in all the budget-conscious consumers. That's capitalism for you. Also, your comment about the screw being worse because it adds weight is laughable. A screw adds a fraction of a gram. No 3D printer will feel the difference when it's hauling around a hotend weighing hundreds of grams. If anything it's better because screws can be taken apart and re-assembled, whereas the only way to disassemble the original bltouch is to irreversibly break that plastic tab, or try to melt and bend it, then melt and bend it back.

@@JasperJanssen I'll agree there, but also with the original poster: the weight of the screw is absolutely negligible and will make no real world difference. There's not even any guarantee that the original unit as a whole weighs less since weights for the two side by side were not provided. I will say: I have an original BLTouch that was faulty and a knockoff 3DTouch that works fine. Either one can make a defective product. The video poster also explicitly showed that he ordered a pack of two of them and never went on to test (or at least mention testing) the second one to see if it was also faulty.

Strange, it looks like the 3D touch has gone through some design iterations (or the clones are all called 3D Touch, but designed by different companies?) The one I have is all SMT with four SOT23s forming an H-bridge to drive the solenoid, a teeny-tiny SMT hall sensor and an ATTiny2313 as the brains of the operation. Like yours it doesn't seem to do much other than a slow red flash. I've actually tested both as well and had the same issue with both genuine and clones. The same applied to Duet boards (authentic and clone). Politics and morals aside, I ended up learning a bunch when the clone Duet boards I ordered once didn't have ANY jumpers pre-installed. I went through several authentic and clone BLTouch sensors (and other Z-axis sensors) but what I discovered was that there are voltage setting differences in the PCBs and with the Duet boards (not sure about other boards). Without any jumpers installed neither authentic or clone would work. With the proper voltage jumpers set, both worked just fine and in an identical fashion. What's sad is that even the BLTouch documentation is so piss poor that it barely assisted the troubleshooting process. Even the OEM of the BLTouch could stand to improve their product and documentation, especially if they are charging a premium. I've also learned not to expect anything to "just work" when it comes to 3D printing parts. However, I always come out of the experience learning something.

I really appreciate you take the effort to make many videos, and I have to say I have learned a lot from your videos. -- thank you for that. But man, I really have to speak up about something: in the world of tech, we follow laws, if there is a patent, the copycats will get punished by the law. The whole 3D printing phenomenon is built on top of expired patents. There is a very good reason for patents to have an expiration date. -- knowledge sharing makes the whole society much more productive. But we want to reward innovators as well, so we give them copyrights. If you think making a cheap clone product off some non-copyrighted item is immoral, I want to argue: A. Discover a cheaper method to manufacture itself, it's a type of innovation. B. To make a product non-necessarily expensive, should be equally immoral. Here is the reality: the Chinese didn't really innovate, they just have a lower-cost production environment - the currency, the policy, the labor, etc. But they didn't do anything immoral. Antclabs is not immoral as well, the western production is just costly. Oh, I got it, this called: CAPITALISM! This has nothing to do with morals. As a Chinese myself, I moved to the US 12 years ago. I know how it feels to be poor. Capitalism left millions of people out of poverty, this included putting 3D printers into people's hands who only make $300 USD a month. --I thank capitalism for that. And some of them have a $15 3D touch instead of a $40 BL touch. I don't think this is immoral. The world is bigger than the US and China, there is Africa, the middle east, south America and more, there're a lot more people who need affordable products than we realize. So, please, stop spreading hatred - if there's no tribalism and the trade war, Antclabs probably can find a cheap manufacturer somewhere in Asia, and make it BL touch $17 with good quality control. See what I'm saying? In this whole thing, there is nothing to do with morals. You can feel free to trash on any silly products, in fact, I encourage you to do that, this can help manufacturers to make better products, but Please stop spreading hatred. I hope you can keep the good work, I really enjoy watching most of your videos, maybe my comment can change the way you look at the whole situation a bit - toward the good direction. Cheers.

THIS is interesting! Do you have a source for it? I'm on the fence about cloned hardware. For the record I purchased two 3D Touch probes. One DOA and the other was good intermittently. Replaced it with a BLTouch and it worked perfectly. However, if it wasn't for cloning designs the 3D printer market would look very different price-wise. I am actually surprised that it's taken so long for a mass-market release of a sensor the employs an optical sensor (in the CR Touch) using the same electromagnetic deployment as the BLTouch.

While the BLTouch does probably have better accuracy and is able to sense better values, if all you want is the ability to start your print without the constant frustration of leveling the bed and getting it wrong and all that, the 3DTouch will be just as good as the Original without any difference. I have the 3DTouch and I love that I can just turn on the printer and print without an hour of configuration first.

Look to the number of negative comments on amazon, where original BLTouch is not working. 20%, that is 1 out of 5 original ones are not working. A LOT of people on FB complain about the original ones. I guess the number of working vs non-working original/clones is about the same, and normally I won't take a risk of spending 40$ on non-working original, rather than 13$ on non-working clone. Sample size of 1 original vs 1 clone is far from being representative to do such radical conclusions. Thousands of people are happy with the clones. I am not advocating to support clones, I just do not understand how come original have such a bad QC and high failure rate when doing stats properly? Besides that, many clones have different connection and setup and you need to spend a little bit of time figuring how to configure it properly.

I have an idea of how to get the BL Touch mounted, but my question is, what is the minimum distance it should be mounted in proximity to the Hotend, due to the temperature damaging the probe? I will be using the part cooling fan you designed so I suppose that will prevent heat radiating out to far, and with a silicon sock on the hotend. Just wondered if anyone has considered this question before, or has an answer from the manufacturer with a limit? Probably over designing but a fact that should be considered.

BLTouch paid the price to invent and refine the product. That is why original items cost more. You are repaying the creator for all the hard (expensive) work they did prior to releasing the product or making a single sale. Your mistake is thinking that the only costs to consider are the current manufacturing costs. You forget about all the previously sunk costs that must be repaid. I do think the BLTouch is overpriced, but it's not the same as theft. Without BLTouch we wouldn't have this type of probe. There are other ways of accomplishing the task without copying. The copy-cat doesn't want to pay the price that it costs to develop something original. They choose to just steal the work someone else already did. Think of the high price tag as the price of innovation. If you don't want innovation, If you want everything in 3D printing from here on to just be copies of copies then by all means support your local cloned products. If you want to see newer and better things then you must be willing to pay a high price to those rare individuals who are capable of creating the innovation. If you don't feed them they starve to death and we stop seeing improvement.

I even started a new configuration file from scratch and nothing. Until then I'm going to assume you are one more account used by a paid agent here to try and hurt my feelings by telling me I'm "full of hot air." The funny part is that nobody reads these comments on this video. It's just you and me here. You don't need to waste two of your screen names for one comment thread that nobody will read.

i am returning my original and getting a clone only because of how disingenuous you seem in this video had you been like "i guess it works alright if you can manage to get it working but this is why clones are bad and you shouldn't buy them" i would have kept the original but now i wanna get the clone just to spite you lol and i dont even know you which is weird you know i know im a good person and the analogy with the bike is garbage because if someone came and copied my bike and rode of with the copy i would not care i still have my bike i read this a year after you posted it this is here forever until you decide to take it down and that a long time for people to be able to read it i think it makes you look bad and you are full of hot air ive posted tons of video of me playing games and i think there might be some with my face

If you just want people to buy genuine item, just tell them. You dont need to mocking the clone, coz u know what? a LOT of people are using it with no problem at all. If you just want to support the original creator, just encourage people to buy original even if the clone one is good. The way you make this video just make it seems like dirty commercial

Hi Eric, If I made a video called "Don't buy a Cloned BLTouch" nobody would watch it and my message wouldn't get out there. Instead, I made this video in this manner to show that you pay for what you get. If you support dirty rotten thieves from China you are going to get an inferior product. Tell me, did you ever get a bicycle stolen? How much did you hate the guy who stole it? We know that guy is a bad person, but the guy who bought the stolen bike it is also a bad person. UNLESS he had no idea the bike was stolen. He really should have known it was stolen because the price was just too low. You, Eric, know better. Cloned products are always stolen property. By purchasing clones you are stealing a sale away from the original creator and giving money to bad people. My integrity is worth more than the money I save buying clones. How about yours?

@@DesignPrototypeTest I got your point, but the way you sent the message is just not right. You said "to show that you pay for what you get", but the problem is people actually like what they paid for. Many cloned parts from Trianglelab are actually high quality products, So by mocking the clone, it wont solve the problem, instead you got so many bad responses. You didn't get so many dislikes for no reason right? I got your point, and i dont support cloned one, but you better go straight to the point, so it wont create misunderstanding. Go straight to the point, tell people why you should support the genuine instead of cloned (EVEN if cloned versions are high quality), make people think instead of you judging, and get your message delivered.

Maybe I can be of some use. As I was all over the interference problem when it was not being talked about. Interference and repeatability was a massive problem with these probes. I don't know if it finally got addressed because im not using them anymore. But the only place you would really hear about it was github. Meanwhile people acted like they were just fine. Because of youtubers I suspect. It becomes a big problem when trying to perfect your high temp prints. I think it was overlooked because of how many people print in PLA. But I suspect what you were having was to do with that. Let me tell you how bad I hated the early version and smart version of BLtouch. Those were broken and shielding the wires did nothing. Blame the design on this one buddy. I bet the clone was a copy of the early revisions and this has finally been addressed.

Sorry, but i strongly disagree that it's immoral to buy a clone from someone who sells his products with like 4.000% cost increase of the production cost. Even 5$ is too much for that

If you had ever spent the insane hours that it takes to conceptualize a thing, and then done the daunting task to iterate it into a fully functional product, and then figured out how to mass produce it with high quality standards, and then made sure that the quality was top notch so that your brand name would be synonymous with quality, I think you would feel differently. You would resent the thieves who just copied all your hard work. The thieves are like a cheater reading your test questions when they never studied a single day for the exam. If you had done this, you would resent the cheaters making money from your work, and you would certainly hate the fact that every item they sell is a sale you won't make. Not only are they using your ideas, they are taking sales away from you. Mi chi, you don't care about this because you don't create original things and you are just a self absorbed child who wants the latest and greatest stuff but doesn't think he should have to support the person who created it. You think the world should work for you and do it for free. That's an insulting attitude. Perhaps consider that attitude when you wonder why life isn't opening up for you, and good things aren't happening to you. Maybe you are the cause of what's wrong in your life and what's wrong in the lives of others as well.

@@DesignPrototypeTest "you don't care about this because you don't create original things". lol, i literally studies product design and i'm a product designer for a living. I create cardboard display prototypes for mass production for companies. It's so funny to read your bullshit. You know, these products don't require tools that cost 100.000 Dollars per revision like for example a computer case (which often also costs 40$ in the end). The material cost per revision are cents. You're trying to compare real engineering processes that require insane amounts of money and time with these crap products that are absolutely primitive and are just some super cheap common electronical sensors you can buy for under 10 Cents in bulk. You have clearly no idea of what you're talking about. And next time you buy something that doesn't work, instead of making a 12 minutes video, just RMA it.

@@DesignPrototypeTest Well... I bought a clone after my BLTouch stopped working. I got 2 months use from it. Almost all internet give the same aftersale service (it sucks). So I decided to not spend +40€ (I live in Europe and here everything is more expensive). I can break +5 clones and still would be cheaper than buying another original BLTouch. My SKR Mini E3 just stopped working (the SD card reader). They are charging 28$. And isn't it an original product? That's a reasonable price. Get the BLTouch down to a reasonable price and I'm sure that people won't bother buying chinese clones... By the way, I'm pretty sure the original and the clones are made at the same place, with the same components.
