You did well there John. Great buy. Nigel Thorley ( JEC ) ran his V8 350 to 250k miles before it was written off in an accident. He is still running another one now (358 ) which is a diesel
@ToTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve I genuinely have no fear of the diesel. Ive owned 2 3.0 litre lion engined cars, and neither has ever skipped a beat. Like the 4.0 V8's they have enough enthusiasts for us to know all their likely failure modes. (Nikasil Water pump Tensioners Valley pipe etc) Knowing where their weakest points are doesn't make them bad engines. The next new engine that any manufacturer produces will have no reputation for issues until it has some miles, years and enthusiasts to tell the tales of woe. And the Monocoque for the x350 is a technical tourdeforce. with few equals even today.

Really useful video, having just bought a 2008 X358 3.0 V6 with a very low mileage. The only problem common to my car was the inner driver's door seal, though mine was at the bottom, plumb in the middle - perhaps where it may be caught by a foot on getting into the car.

Your 308 and My 358 parked next to each other would make for an interesting compare and contrast video Gareth. Black Bomber v Big Blu. The height difference alone would I think be quite an eyebrow-raiser. Gong for Christmas then!

@@ToTheGarage sounds good to me. The underpinnings of the 358 are clearly far more modern than the 308, where evolution from previous XJ’s over decades is evident. The buying, running cost comparison would be interesting too.

You surprised me John! I fully expected an X308 to be your next project car, after all it's really just a four door XK which you know inside and out. Easy peasey :-) The X350s were pretty decent overall, but in my opinion they lost the traditional Jaguar ride and handling with that troublesome air suspension...again, just my 2 cents. Congrats on the buy and best of luck with BLU...cheers!

x308. (prettier and i know the so wel) was top of my list, but the challenge of buying a sub £3000 car with no welding or body corrosion issues kept me looking rather than buying untill Blu came along.. plus the fuel cost benefits, and here we are😁👍

From Fraser Mitchell, husband of Leslie I used to replace my wheel centre caps every year ! You could get them quite cheap on the internet, but winter always used to be very severe on them. Maybe Jaguar OEM are better, but they are eye-wateringly expensive. I owned two X350s, from 2010-2016 and 2016-2019, the latter an X358 Sovereign that was a lot better than the first car.

Can you lift an air suspension car without precautions?
@ToTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Jags certainly. The downward travel is limited by the small top wishbone. I can't vouch for the hybrid exotic systems on some Citroens (oleomatic i believe). And i would be quite careful about lifting a car with aftermarket conversion to air bags.
@neillfoster37164 жыл бұрын
Ah ok I know you can not lift Bentley’s without selecting a safe mode , I think some Range Rovers are the same Enjoy your exotica 😀
@gepwxaqdfsidsesg15484 жыл бұрын
Actually it depends. If I lift all four wheels on mine with ignition on then when you put it put it drops right down to the bump stops on all for and will not come back up until it's actually driven. This can make it tricky to get off of the jack.

I'm thinking about buying one of these... Would you recommend them as a whole?? Or is it a money pit? I'm mostly scared of suspension issues and dpf
@ToTheGarage3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Im enjoying my ownership. DPF is not really an issue as long as you drive 30 minutes or more on quick roads regularly (which I do) Air Suspension can throw faults and in one of my videos you can watch how I replaced the piston ring in the air compressor ( the most common Air suspension fault) Its not expensive to do it yourself but in fairness as its a wear item it will need doing on most air suspended cars as they reach 150,000 miles or so. A well serviced example wil be no more of. a money pit. than any other 15 year old luxury. car. They are very well built and at least conventional corrosion is nothing to worry about on these aluminium mile munchers.

What really annoys me is that you'll be paying high rate road tax on a car that uses the road less than a diesel car of the same age paying just £30 a year. Now that it has been proven that diesels are less clean and don't deserve the discount, the government should reduce the tax on cars like this especially as diesel owners are now being given payments because their cars aren't as clean as they were led to believe ... as if that matters, they've been riding on the backs of petrol owners for years and now want compensating for paying less. Makes my blood boil.

Unless you do 30,000 miles a year and are paying for your own fuel at UK prices. and want to spend circa £3000 and not have welding to do. Don't get me wrong, you can buy really nice X308's at a good price. (My friend Gareth has recently done so) but they are not common when you are on a budget.
