Yeah, as someone who wants to spend time doing multiple martial arts, I don’t want to bother dedicating all that extra time to get more belts. Once I reach blue I’ll just practice on a dummy and go do sessions to stay up-to-date. I also want to minimize my training time to reduce the likelihood of (chronic) injuries.

I got my blue belt in 2 years. At the age of 38. Showing up 3 times a week. And was competed in 3 tournaments. 2 years ago my father died in the Philippines so I had to move and stopped training. When I got back in the states 9 months ago Covid was as it’s peak and no vaccine rollout I did show up and started training again. Little I did I know the stress that I was feeling rolling with people who just recovered from Covid and I live with my mother which is a cancel survivor and just had a minor stroke recently. I still remember going to the gym that day to explain my situation to my couch that I’m going to stop. My couch told me that I don’t have to explain he knows I had to do it. So now I don’t really mind just staying at blue belt. But I’m still interested on rolling, watching BJJ matches online and I do want that purple belt. Right now I’m just buying BJJ intructionals and drill it in my diy dummy. At least if I do go back god knows when I have new weapons and my disposal. And counters to submissions that Im getting caught at.

I think all of those are pretty solid reasons. If it took me 6 years of consistent training to get my blue belt then I'd probably quit too. I'm not in it for the belts but that would be hard on your brain knowing that you spent over half a decade to get to your first promotion.

This is wonderful!!!! Great job Dan! I can’t wait to be a blue belt one day but more importantly to continue to grow on my jiujitsu journey and to keep learning. Very blessed to be apart of 417 BJJ

This is exactly the problem with some schools. There is no reason a belt should take 6 years. The average for white to black belt is 10 years. Instructors have to stay on top of their students promotions and not let them sit in a belt for that long. If they are putting in the work and showing improvements they need to be ranked up.
