Dude, here's what I do when I have a run in like that with a rude person. I'm keeping it level - they're stonewalling me with rudeness for absolutely no reason - I let my shoulders drop (deescalation), I cock my head to the side (inquisitiveness activated), subtle squint of my dazzling blue eyes (can't help it) and I say: "Hey, are you ok?" Game over. Cracked 'em. Will they still be rude, maybe, will they actually open up?!, maybe - but either way - cracked the shields. Showing some empathy and changing the vector of the conversation will cause a cognitive short circuit.
