I went to college and grad school but you know what life happens and I have never worked a day in the field I really wanted to because I ended up in offices and sales. I also had every service job you could have in college, hostessing, food running, cashier, stock girl etc. Let me tell you there’s contractors out there making more than doctors. Making as much as the architects they work for or more. There are all different types of education. I had kids I went to college with who couldn’t change a lightbulb because they didn’t know the light fixture came off. Who went days with no toilet waiting for a plumber because the chain fell off the flusher and they didn’t know the lid came off the toilet tank. Didn’t know how to cook or do laundry it was funny but sad because these were 18-22 year olds who were entirely helpless, but really book smart. Bottom line is choose a career you’re good at. A career that pays a living wage at least cuz this country is stingy. I worked my entire way through school with people looking down on me behind those counters never batting an eye because my GPA was higher than they could count and I could take care of myself in any situation from fixing my toilet, to a sconce, to a shelf, to an alternator. That’s what this world should really be instilling in people education and common sense. Guess what a nurse can make $20 an hour so can a masonry worker. Just pick something solid that you actually want to do and are capable of doing.

A bit of a tangent, but there's a pretty big misconception about wages of a lot blue-collar work. Skilled trades are vital and in pretty high and stable demand. Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, carpenters, etc usually make good money, assuming they have legitimately recognized licences or certifications. It's standard to feel that they over charge, or at least that they charge way more than it would cost to DIY, and how could that be true if they also are poorly paid? The confusion is in lumping everyone who works with their hands. On that point it's hard to disagree. I've been a high school teacher for 10 years and have a 2 year old, so I have done my fair share of dreaming and studying goals and aspirations for young people. I'd be more than happy if our baby boy, or anyone, became an electrician, no need for a degree for that. I would though, hope that I can teach him to aim higher than mowing lawns.
@theneoenigma20944 жыл бұрын
As a carpenter, I usually say that we charge the amounts we do because not just any person can do what we can, and do it properly and to code. We have the knowledge and supplies to build a whole damn house in less than a week. There are not many people who are properly licensed in most areas that can do stuff like that.

Living within your means, you can save up enough money to buy a house, or go to college. It gives you some freedom and independence. When you go straight to college after high-school, you invariably get saddled with some degree of debt, that hangs over your head whether or not you graduate. Funny thing is, Electricians and Plumbers are the ones that are going to be making all the money And they are considered blue collar
@permafrost09794 жыл бұрын
Grandpa has a point: blue collar is not going backward we will always need plumbers and electricians and sanitation workers, etc. You can make a decent living in those fields. And if you own such a business, even better. Plus, you can always do manual labor, save up, and go to college later, there's no rush. Going to college straight out of high-school often leads to lessons learned, but money wasted. Better to make money while maturing straight out of high-school, and you can focus on your education as an adult college student 🤷🏽♂️ #my0.02

Honestly, college and grad school don't mean as much any more. EVERYONE has to have a college degree or more for a big high paying job, so having one doesn't make you stand out (unless it's maybe Harvard level). And yeah, blue collar jobs may not be as glamorous, but I totally agree this generation could stand to spend some time working them, because most of them don't know how to do anything.

Okay some people do not know the different between entry level working class jobs, blue collar, and white collar. Entry level working class jobs: Starbucks barista, janitor, office/hotel housekeeping, waitress.. basically jobs that do not require even a HS diploma, just a pulse. Blue collar work you need an education. My husband went to school for 4 years to be an electrician. White collar work requires college most of the time, these are your bankers, lawyers, accountant, etc.

I think at this point it’s not so much as whether or not it’s lesser, but more, what’ll get you more money in an economy where things cost a lot more now a days. Sure some trades are pretty well paying, but not every blue collar job will be. Not to say all white collar jobs are super well paying either, but it’s kinda case by case.

Majority of the people who are in white collar jobs went to college and spent $15,000-$20,000 in the 4 to 6 years of education vs someone who are in blue collar jobs learn a skillset either for free or paid $1,000 to learn these trade and my point is even if few who are in a blue collar job want to transfer to the white collar job (“like myself”) they have a skillset that would set them up for life vs someone who went to college for 4 to 6 years

Tradesmen can see the the blue collar bias after the first few sentences. That's why you get to pay more for that addition or remodel. Friend just paid $250k to remodel a small house and no addition in LA. The job looked like a 80k job at most.

skilled trades people can make more money than doctors and lawyers. plumbers, electricians, and carpenters make googobs of money per hour. don't let it be a multi location company with several skilled laborers on staff and contracted buildings? it's a wrap! it's a good living and you don't have to pay expensive malpractice insurance.
