The hole in the reptile caves are for plastic loop tags with the logo, company name, barcode, and the like. But it also helps when submerged in water to help the trapped air have a place to escape as well as allows for water flow through the cave. Though the last two are more of happy little accidents than for true functionality. A tip for doing silicone on glass jars and the like. Get a plastic coffee cup/dixi or the like. Add some rubbing alcohol to it then squeeze a bunch of silicone into the rubbing alcohol and mix like crazy till completely till i has the consistency of thick glue. Then you can paint it on with a cheap plastic brush. I would do a few layers if you want a total blackout. You could do a layer of silicone then add cheap sand then add a second layer and add the black sand. Just remember you will have to wait a few extra days to make sure the rubbing alcohol has totally defused out of the silicone before adding it to your tank.

Would of thought the little hole in some of the caves is for multiple uses: airline for an airstone, retailer sell tags on string, and for more flow through them to avoid stagnant water.

Hi Mark, while I'm not sure of the answer to the hole, here's my experience. I used a Crystal Head vodka bottle (skull shaped) inside an aquarium, my intent was to part fill with substrate and then some small plants to grow inside. I had about 5 bacterial blooms and figured this may be water circulation. Drilled a hole in the back and never had another bacterial bloom. It did kind of look cool, though I knew it wasn't healthy. The cloudy water would slowly drift out the top of the bottle like a light fog and the misty water inside the skull really made it stand out.

Really cool! Very much looking forward to seeing the babies. To be fair though, us mere fish keeping mortals could only dream of starting a tank like this so fast. Most of us don't have several buckets of well-established plants (replete with all sorts of good bacteria) to start with. Also, I have found the bacteria in a bottle to be quite variable in quality and freshness. (Looking with pangs of envy at my empty 5-gallon caradina tank that just finished up with a 4-week fishless cycle.)

Hey man, I've held lots of breeding ancistrus over the years and 22 is generally ok but for breeding a bit low. I usually kept it at around 24-25 and they gave a clutch of 15 fry every 2-3 months. The trick to get them to mate is actually to simulate the rain season. I did this by doing a fairly large water change every 5-7 days when I tried to get them to spawn, having the new water being a bit (3-4 degrees C) colder than the tank and using a piece of plexiglass with holes drilled in made the "rain drops". I also lowered the lights a bit during that time to simulate cloud cover. It seems the water change only already triggered the spawning the first few times, but after reading up I added the other stuff. Not sure if its all effective but it's good fun in any case. Definitely keep oxygen levels high, as I've found that the eggs have a better chance of survival if there is more oxygen in the water. You will see the father fanning the eggs as well, and I understand that that behavior is precisely to get that oxygen rich water across the eggs. Also, higher temperatures speeds up the lifecycle of the shrimp. That means they die sooner, but they also lay eggs more often and mature quicker. If you want to run through more generations a bit quicker and cull a lot to achieve desired breeding stock results that might factor in to your standard temperature. Love your fish room and can't wait to see what results you get from that breeding tank with two of my favorite animals, the ancistrus and the blue dreams!

This is a wonderful video Mark! I am anxious to see if you have any issues with a bare bottom tank and plecos. I have had terrible luck with ammonia spikes...especially when using protein rich foods. If I use a sand or gravel substrate the tank stability is very strong! Love your cave design and creativity too! Love these types of videos you do! 🤩

Great video! Really interesting and unique ways of making hides that allow you to view the fry 😊 Good luck with the BNPs! They’re supposedly easy to breed with caves and big water changes. Their fry are amazing to watch grow, especially in their wiggly phase 😁 Temperature wise, they originate from Amazon rivers so 23-27 is a good general range 😊

I assume the hole in the cave improves water circulation. With only the main entrance as an opening, it's basically impossible for any water to circulate between the inside and outside of the cave. The added hole gives water a path through the cave and back out, allowing it to circulate. Probably prevents buildup of CO2, nutrients/waste, and lack of O2.

They will definitely eat shrimp, but as Marks Shrimp Tanks said, if you feed them enough, it's less likely. It'll still happen, but your shrimp will breed faster than they are eaten. You just want a few plants/hides for the shrimp to ensure they have somewhere to hide if the bristlenose comes out looking for food

But in this video, I noticed that you just added seachem stability but not goldfish food... Is it because you don't recommand anymore to use the goldfish powder food for cycling a new shrimp tank? And if you still recommand to use the goldfish powder food with seachem stability.... How many times do I have to add goldfish powder food in cycling tank? or just one time is enough then wait for at least a month to cycle? Thank you so much again Mark.

I used to keep my bristlenose tank at 24-26C, I'd also do 20-30% water changes with cold-ish water, as it's meant to help encourage breeding. It's probably a good thing you only have a couple in there, because they breed like crazy. Have you got any other forms of plecos/bristlenose?

yes I have a couple of albino and a few young normal ones in other tanks. they seem to make a real difference in mass breeding neos.

Love your videos. I think the caves you moved the plecos with would be much better for them to breed. I raised Bristle nose plecos for a couple years. They are super easy to raise. As your tank sits right now I would guess if they breed they would breed in the coconut shell. They like small places. Hope they do good for you. I also wanted to say I really like your pitcher plants that you have there! Good luck Buddy!

Bristlenose plecos are very tolerant temperature-wise. I have them in all my tanks. Some are heated to 28 degrees and some are without heaters, which means 20-22. And I never had an issue.

Hi Mark. Pretty sure that jar will crack as it's naff glass. You could have drilled another hole in the cave. Then used hole to suspend rather than silicone.

The bare bottom just doesn't look/feel natural to me... And gravel provides so much surface for beneficial bacteria.. I read an article about gravel vs bare the difference was significant in favor of even a thin layer of gravel.. I'm not saying there will be any issue for you, you're a great shrimp keeper and maintain your tank so well..! You could put some gravel in the base of the sponge filter.. The shrimp may breed better because the plecos provide a constant supply of fish poop....

If the purpose is to breed, bare bottom is usually easiest for maintenance and collecting fry. I initially started breeding fish in a planted tank and realised I had made a mistake hahaha

years back I seen a neo setup that was in Taiwan and all they had was a large square concrete ponds, no plants or anything and they were breeding thousands of neos in it with hundreds of large bristlenoses, thats where I got the idea for this tank.

I’d imagine if it was a thought out decision the hole is to allow water flow in the cave if there was no hole likely no new water would enter since you can’t compress liquid (without enough force to freeze it but that takes huge atmospheric pressures and our pumps/filters aren’t that strong lol) more supporting evidence to this theory is that if the hole is to allow air to exit when filled with water the hole would be at the highest point in the cave allowing it to actually do that task the hole could also be a completely over looked aspect on his part and may only be there for packaging purposes (like if a tag was ran through it for example)

Ive actually been back to the shop and looked at these and it was for a tag, the one I had just had a sticker with a barcode on stuck to its base.

@@MarksShrimpTanks yea figured that was probably the reason it’s common a lot of hard scape items have tags going through existing holes or they make one for a tag to go through I had to edit my comment though I misremembered what happens when you successfully compress water

I like that it's a bare bottom tank. With the plants it looks quite nice. I had a pair in a 10 gallon tank, and they bred very prolifically for me. I had a terra cotta pot, upside down, with a flat rock on top, and it was covered in java moss. Also had a nice piece of Mopani wood in for them as well, with java fern on it. One bristle nose was albino and the other was dark like yours. The babies were a mix. Some were albino, like mom, and some were like the black dad. I love the bristle noses. They are so cute, I think. Anyhow, I hope they do go into the cave on the side of the tank. Will be fun to be able to watch their breeding progress in there. Thanks and am looking forward to the next video.
