I’m in blue iris 5. Your tutorial is the same though for me so thank you for this video. It was very helpful.

Hi thanks for doing this video. This seems very handy. I have a question before I set it up. Can I make Blue Iris switch to a profile when two phones are away from the home simalteousnly? Or will it only see that one phone is away and trigger the profile? I want to set up a vacation profile for when my whole family are not home so the camera's switch to my holiday profile

Great video, I was using Gefoence successfully on My S9 Plus & my Wife's S8 Plus. About 6 months ago I decided to setup a Raspberry PI as a VPN server and really make sure my Blue Iris server was secure. This works perfectly but for some reason that I have never been able to figure out the geofence feature wouldn't work at all, meaning that it would not recognize that any device had either left or returned to home. I really liked being able to automatically switch to my "Away" profile when we left our home

Geofencing doesnt work with a vpn unfortunately. Not sure of a workaround

Excellent tip. Have you noticed any effect on phone battery life in the iPhone or Android since they are (frequently?) sending location data to BI?

Not really. It seems BI on android only accesses the GPS when you actually go into the app.

Great videos RIchard - thank you! To use the geofence feature on all the phones in the house, do you need to load the BI software on each phone? For example, it would be nice to know the kids arrived home, but don’t want them to be able to modify the settings because their phone logs into BI.

Yes each phone needs to log into BI for geofencing to work. You can set them up a different username without admin privilege so they cant change settings

It's important to note that with Android 10 you have to allow the BI app to have access to Location all the time. These days you can disable location to keep apps from using too much battery, spying on you, etc. So go to Settings > Location > App Permission > Select Blue Iris > Allow all the time. Mine was set to 'Allow only while using the app' and BI never knew I was inside the geofence.
