What fun it was to sing this tune with Kevin Mahogany last night. We recorded this track on my "Passion Dance" cd. on Telarc in 1996. Bob Freedman wrote this wonderful chart for the NJCU Band and Ed Joffe our director made it all happen. Thanks so much Ed. Roseanna

Guys in any 'live' performance there can be flaws. What's super cool about this video is we had a blast. My warmest regards to Kevin for singing with me and the NJCU Big Band.

Kevin Mahogany (July 30, 1958-Dec. 18, 2017) was one of the top jazz singers ever since he became prominent in the 1990s. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Mahogany played baritone saxophone while growing up, performing with bands while in high school He switched his focus to singing while attending Baker University, graduating in 1981 and mostly working in Kansas City during the 1980s. Mahogany’s debut CD, 1993’s Double Rainbow, really launched his career and he became recognized as one of the few significant male jazz singers during the 25 years before his unexpected death in 2017 from a stroke when he was just 59.

Just now found this and thought Wonder if Scotty Wright does this one, as a fan of Monk? Saw your comment, so bet you had!

Yes, I sing Abbey Lincoln's lyric to 'Blue Monk'; a friend of mine also wrote words to it, so I wrote a verse that linked the two together. I've never met Ms Vitro, but we've shared a lot via the internet - exchanging ideas, lyrics, news, etc. I got to see Kevin perform at Yoshi's and thanked him his words of encouragement when I was recovering from a stroke. He left us less than a month later... Thank you Bob, for sharing this video of two wonderful musicians!@@boborrahood

@@scottywright9369 Yes, I remember you got to go to Kevin Mahogany's show and I regret missing that one. Wish I'd saved that chart I had of Kevin's R & B arrangement of "I'm Walkin" . I just got another chart of Long As You're Living. I'll be doing that hopefully next week with Larry Chinn on keys, et al, at Chris Cortez's Monday night jam at Max's in Burlingame. Hope to see you sometime soon!

great but.....was it me or did the guitarist seem a bit shocked and nearly missed his guitar solo?

The biggest danger when sharing the stage with great musicians is forgetting you're in the band, not the audience!

Now that you mention it, I didn't see the guitarist strum anything. Maybe he wasn't on this one? And Roseanna Vitro gave credit to only the pianist, so no guitar "solo", but no rhythm guitar either.

The Scat portions were hard to listen to for me. Sorry. But if you're going to sing with a strong "full force" voice you've got to pull the Mic away from your face otherwise it hurts to listen to. The rest was quite nice.
