Fun fact, the admiral on the Japanese side was a samurai (sword ,black powder cannon and all) back when he was a kid. This war still had the generation that was forced to open to the world by the Americans.

The other fun fact, one of the combatant on Japanese side is Lt. Isoroku Yamamoto who lost 2 fingers due to an accidental explosion of an 8" shell. Had he lost one more finger, he would've been medically discharge from the IPN and the world history would've been very different.

Japanese were buying their new stellar ships from British, and Britain had good relations with Japan. The paranoia came from "what if" Japan ambushed them with their fresh vessels from Britain.

In fact, Russian Baltic squadron was utterly obsolete and made up of various outdated leftovers, and it was the last ditch attempt to influence the war, as the Far East Fleet was damaged and trapped in the harbour by the Japanese, and the Russians thought they could relief them with the Baltic squadron sneaking from behind.

@@NorthonBruce Tbh, you're overstating obsoleteness of the ships, some of the ships were nearly brand new, some were older and obsolescent but still useable, and some were of only limited use, but they weren't exactly hopelessly outmatched by Japanese fleet in terms of ships. The reinforcement fleet that Russia sent through Suez on the other hand that has been sent to add numbers, that one was hopelessly obsolete and completely useless. While at disadvantage in terms of ships, the reason why they got so completely overwhelmed was poor crew training. Additionally, due to a lucky hit, the Russian admiral was injured and incapacitated early in the battle, making the situation even messier for Russian fleet.

When it was the Soviet Union, it’s military was decent. Not amazing, but it was at least able to fight and move competently. And many of their best troops were Ukrainian.

The reason why warcrimes should not be ignored is that it only feeds the radical movements and leads to worse treatment of your own pow's... Just imagine how many sailor's from the Allies were killed by the aftermath of the laconia incident... And somehow the people responsible got meals for that... Yeah, the point of rules of war isn't to be "nice." It's to avoid unnecessary brutality that drags out the fighting and leads to a lot more dead and crippled people on both sides, and in general makes the war messier for no real gain. Why don't we shoot hospital ships? Because then ours are fair game and no one gets to have hospital ships anymore. Why don't we execute prisoners or surrendering enemy forces? Because if they don't trust you to accept a surrender or treat them with dignity, they'll fight to the bitter end every single time. Same goes for false surrenders, you'll punk them once or twice and then they'll just put you down every single time after.

Naval battles aren't as simple as "point and shoot". You need to consider physics like how far the shells will travel before hitting the water. And sometimes the shells will bounce off the surface of the water if they're traveling too quickly

Small fun fact about the comment at 5:25 indeed Japan didn't do anything in the Atlantic or Mediteranean sea in WW2, but during WW1, as Japan was allied with the Entente they sent destroyers to Europe to help counter the Austro-Hungarian submarines. They did so with distinction.

I saw from a comment on another video that the conscripted peasants were brought in from the middle of Russia, meaning they might not even have seen a large lake before, let alone an ocean. It would be a shock to find out they could swim. I think they had all the reason in the world to be scared.

14:07: Most of the japanese warships at Tsushima were at the height of technology of the day, actually. They had commissioned them from british shipyards.

One thing to note about the battle of Tsushima is that the Japanese were markedly more advanced than the russians, the 1st pacific squadron that the Japanese trapped in port Arthur were more or less on par but got out manuevered and were outnumbered as well. The Squadron assembled from the baltic fleet however was the dregs of the Russian Navy, their most capable naval forces being stationed in the black sea at Sevastopol, the third pacific was crewed largely by untrained uneducated conscripts, and half of it were geriatric hulks that the admiral tried to avoid linking up with because he considered them a liability in the line of battle, this was well into the dreadnaught era and some of the russian ships were IRONCLADS. The Japanese fleet at Tsushima was largely made up of modern ships based on British Royal Navy designs and doctrine some even built by the royal navy for japan crewed by disciplined sailors that were in large part trained by either Royal Navy officers or Japanese trained on Royal Navy Doctrine. Tsushima was not a fair fight, the Russians might as well have tried to go up against the Royal Navy or the US Navy of the time, the result would have been the same.

Actually, firing from ship cannons on distance of several miles, on a moving platform to moving target is not so easy. You have to calculate a lot of factors to determine right point to shoot where you want to hit. And yes. This Baltic Fleet was full of inexperienced and untrained crews.

Well, we Russians have always been stronger on land than at sea. In addition, at that time, Japan's technology in the fleet was better than ours (for example, the Japanese used new, more deadly projectiles). One mistake here: the British didn’t revoke their access to the canal. Some of the ships were just too big to fit, so those ships went around Africa while smaller ships went through the canal

This video is toooooo short, so many important things left behind. First of all sea weapons before WW1 were very inaccurate, 1 in 8 hit is average, maybe even good. Next - it was Russian Imperial Navy, so it was massively outdated, especially technologically - maybe in 1840 it would be good, but totally not in 1900, when e.g. Japan and Germany build absolutely new navy whit newest technology implicated and top of the line equipment. And of course rulers and command in last years of Russian Empire were totally incompetent, even people were tired of rulers incompetence so strongly that they started the revolution, and of course lack of any competence were so deep that rulers failed any and all possible and impossible attempts to stop it. Not to mention another numerous problems....
