This is why I love history. You cannot make up a fiction story that is as crazy as anything that real life can conjure.

That was pretty good introduction to a topic. Wanna know more? There is a video called "Voyage of the Damned" by Drachinifiel (who is an actual naval historian). It's more detained and in-depth 40+ minutes account of incompetency, inaptitude and inadequacy ("Do you see any torpedo boats?" (C)Kamchatka).

Admiral Rozhestvensky is done really dirty by this video. Yes he had a temper, but he was also by most accounts a competent commander. He knew from the start that this was a terrible idea, and while all these disasters were happening you’d usually find him screaming at ship commanders trying to get the situation under control. The problem was the vast majority of the crew had no idea what they were doing and the men he put in charge neglected their duties and were beyond paranoid and inept.

As commander he is responsible for those under his command.

@@corvanna4438 The fact he actually managed to drag this trainwreck over 18,000 miles to the other side of the world shows his capabilities as an officer, especially since he did it without satisfactory logistical capability and with much of his crew being illiterate peasants (whose training had to begin with teaching them the ocean existed) with the occasional revolutionary thrown in. If he was any less competent an admiral, the entire Second Pacific Squadron would have likely self-destructed en route.

This video somehow never gets old no matter how many times I watch it. The story is just too damn funny and idiotic and gives a surprisingly accurate view of Russian naval military history.

A man behind attack to Pearl Harbor Isoroku Yamamoto. He was only an young officer as that time, wounded at the Battle of Tsushima, losing two fingers on his left hand, as the cruiser was hit by the Russian battle line.

The storylines of the people who were apart of conflicts like this, like WW1, and then carry on and play a big role in WW2 are really interesting to me. He had just graduated from the naval academy right before this if I’m not mistaken, which I definitely could be but I think that’s right.

Russia might as well disband their Baltic fleet imo once Sweden and Finland are in NATO (because NATO LAKE duh). It would be a waste of time, energy and money since it can’t do anything when that happens in the case of a war. Might as well merge it with the Russian northern sea at Murmansk where it can at least escape to the deep ocean and do shit. Like it won’t be able to leave the Baltic without getting spotted and immediately targeted which would be a big waste of money if it sunk without doing much.

Just as a reminder, the Russian navy has NEVER managed to shed this kind of incompetence. It has always been and will always be like this. And you know what, I don’t mind.

It’s almost impossible, at least if history is the example, to shake their kind of deep and widespread corruption. It seeps into everything, shows up unexpectedly, and just can’t be gotten away from. It’s almost bizarre the way they have kept the corruption despite the system in place. I mean, that was one of the big arguments with the czarist system, they got rid of the system but just couldn’t shake the corruption.
