40 years on I can still remember all but a couple of the runners. What a great field, so much more strength in depth than there is today.
@garrywilson73273 жыл бұрын
I remember this very clearly as a young man of 23 (63 now). Cheltenham gold cups of today simply can't compete with the strength in depth of this one. Chasers of that era much better than today's!

Martin Pipe revolutionised the training of jump racing. Merely by ensuring his horses were fit meant they were at an advantage. Training then was more done on the racecourse.

I seem to remember these old warriors coming out for many seasons without being dogged by injuries, what a field, back in the day they seemed to be tougher than today's crop of stayers who seem more prone to career ending or fatal injuries.

They were and gave away lumps of weight in handicaps,battle hardened warriors. Today's neutered chasers powder puffs. Like to see kauto ,or denman or best mate ,orchid etc give away 35lb in one race and win .
@karenblackadder11832 жыл бұрын
@@keithmaxine7163 Desert Orchid raced every 3rd Saturday giving away lumps of weight. Think only Arkle gave away 35lb and won. That was the Irish National where he beat Height of Fashion. I'm old enough and fortunate enough to have watched Arkle race.

Silver buck was one of the best chasers I've ever seen and it was justice that he won a gold cup to add to the two king George chases he won. The 1981 king George chase was abandoned due to the weather and had he run in it he would surely have made it a historic treble. Hardly ever beaten he only ever did just enough so the handicapper never gave him the rating his talents really deserved. Gave sunset Christo over two stone and was only just beaten by him, not that long before he finished fourth to silver buck I this gold cup. He gave Burrough hill lad over 20lbs and beat him cold at haydock. Barney curley found him in Ireland and the vet said he had the strongest heart he ever heard of any horse. A real true superstar.

Was my favourite too. Amazing horse. Dickinson thinks he would have won the famous first 5 home the following year if he had been right, but had a few problems that year.

@@keithmaxine7163 great to share these memories. I saw silver buck early on at Leicester in a hurdles race where he was against Willie wumpkins. Bucket was carrying top weight and if I'm not mistaken Dickinson was riding. Over the last bucket came past Willie wumpkins to take the lead but as they passed me Willie wumpkins was fighting back and it looked as though he would prevail. Photo was called and there was some nail biting. I was a kid and my dad had backed the first two for me in a reversed forecast. Dad however, as a big gambler had it one way only, bucket to beat wumpkins. Sweating still the tannoy announced bucket had come again to get up, much as he did throughout his career. Dad was chuffed to bits and loaded too. How timeform give him such a lowly rating I don't know. He beat everything matched against him and when he didn't it was usually because therevwss something wrong with him. Had it not been abandoned in 81, and the nail in the foot, would have been the first triple king George winner. He had an infection when beaten by wayward lad the following year or it could have been a quadruple. It's hard to beat everything around you for so long and yes when he beat burrough hill lad that was a sight to behold. Wish I could see that race!

Three out of the five finished again in 1983 plus two more Dickinson horses . Those were the days! it seems there were far more runners then. As I said previously Silver Buck was a very nervous horse and it cost him his life.

amazing how these horses stick in the memory, the only ones i cant recall are snow flyer and wansford boy, both grittar and tied cottage ran game races, mr dickinson you should have stayed in national hunt racing not wasting your time with sangster, robert earnshaw such an elegant action, reminds me of ap lol

The best field ever to grace the gold cup.. All winners at the best occasions.. Loved silver buck and Wayward lad the unluckiest loser at the expense of dawn run..
@noamansaleem17073 жыл бұрын
Silver Buck was the reason I started following NH horse racing. Was heartbroken in the ‘81 Gold Cup, but the high of the ‘82 Gold Cup has never been bettered. The quality of the field was comparable to the ‘86 Arc. Similarly, I’ve never felt lower than when Wayward Lad was caught by Dawn Run. To this day, it kills me he didn’t win. My two all time favourite racehorses who have given me some of the most precious moments in life, never mind horse racing.
