I returned to Pennsylvania in July of 1994 after an annual trip to Lake Mississagagon in Ontario with a copy of "Five Days in July". Went to my best friends house and introduced him to Blue Rodeo. The band quickly became one of our favorite bands and we listened to them often when we were together. This song was one of his favorites. Sadly, after 47 years of friendship and doing virtually everything together he passed away in November of 2022 from cancer. Now whenever I listen to Blue Rodeo and more so this song in particular it puts me in a melancholy state of mind but it also reminds me of the great times my buddy and I had together. RIP Dave, I will miss you until we meet again....

I'm Australian, but most of my family are Canadian. I've been visiting them regularly since 1984 and this song takes me back there more than any other. The audience singing along is gold. I love it.

The audience looks so happy, they're not screaming so loud nobody can hear the actual music, they're all just enjoying the music, enjoying singing it, enjoying the whole song, concert and life in that moment. In short, this is my perfect idea of "at peace". Love this band.

Blue Rodeo played Interstellar Rodeo in Winnipeg in 2015, closing the three-day festival on the final night, a Sunday in late July. They closed their set with this song, the audience singing the first verse just like in this video. It was a beautiful, cloudless evening, the sun was just setting over the Forks in downtown Winnipeg, the stage was framed by the Museum of Human Rights just behind it, the moon was out...I remember thinking that this was THE quintessential Canadian moment, and that it would never get better than this.

No, there isn't sadness in Blue Rodeo's music. Just bitter-sweet memories, a bit of melancholia with a slight touch of outer and inner greyness. That's it. Neil Young and Blue Rodeo, the best and the highest points of Canadian music.
