I think you missed the clues in the video. He’s in “the friend zone” with the music industry. Dorothy Gale (wizard of Oz) couldn’t get into the club because she doesn’t meet the age requirements for the club, so she and tin man, scarecrow and lion are trying to sneak in. John Popper doesn’t meet the aesthetic expectations of the music industry so they require him to play behind the curtain while they have a fake act outside that the fans think is the real deal, while John Popper is the man behind the curtain. Popper was a large man and did not fit into what music execs wanted to package…and sexy little Dorothy and her friends just wanted to hear him play, but were prevented from doing so by the velvet rope bouncer and the music exec. The coffee tea line was after a line about how he has to be happy with whatever is in his cup… Great song, great video. My favorite blues traveler one.

Never mind, I’m wrong about the song meaning according to Wikipedia “The song tells of the relationship Popper had with original bass player Felicia. Popper had a crush on her, but was worried because they also shared a close friendship.[6] According to guitarist Chan Kinchila the two still remained close friends after the events of the songs.[6] She was also the subject of a later song, "Felicia"”

One night in 1989, my band "Spears Arrows" was the opening act at The Paradise club in Boston. Another local band, "Crab Daddy" was after us then the headliner...a band from NYC that none of us had heard of. After we did our set we were backstage in our dressing room drinking a case of beer that our roadie procured "somewhere" and rolling spliffs...all of a sudden a big fat guy walks in and says "Smells great in here!"...so naturally we shared some of our beers and got him and his band properly stoned. When they had to go on we stayed in the dressing room and continued to party with Crab Daddy. Then we heard them. Blues Traveler. Minds blown.

You guys nailed this one content-wise. Great live band! Lucky enough to see them on the HORDE tour in '94 w/ Allman Bros, Big Head Todd & Sheryl Crow. John Popper is more or less the harmonica GOAT IMO. 'But Anyway' is another great single from them with an awesome harp solo ✌

Wizard of Oz themed video. The girl and her friends were dressed like Dorothy, Tin man, lion and scarecrow. Blues traveler was behind the curtain while attractive people were on stage. The song is all metaphors. A girl is giving him a run around, but it's also other things like Hollywood and the music industry....

At the time John Popper was the first person at Juliard to have majored in Harmonica. Also, love the Wizard of Oz theme of the video and how they were often not featured out front because of looks.

I love this band. John Popper the lead singer, had a special vest made that holds all of his harmonicas. That is bad ass! I am so sorry to say that this band does not have a very big following. They are so talented. So underrated.

Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz is with the Lion, the Scarecrow, Tin man, and her dog Toto. They discover that the "wizard" is running things behind the curtain. Everything in front of the curtain is fake.

I saw Blues Traveler and Phish at an outdoor concert in Vermont, a ski resort in the middle of summer. It was epic, the '90s were so much fun! Think you were spot on about the Hollywood side of this song. The band on stage in the video is NOT Blues Traveler, they are a front. The band is playing behind the curtain, the girl is wearing ruby red slippers like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. The little dog Toto exposes the real band playing. This is a dig on Hollywood and the music industry which is more interested in selling looks than talent. They called the lead singer of Blues Traveler, John Popper, the biggest man in music because he was obese...

Blues Traveler along with Phish, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, Dave Mathew’s, Blind Melon and Big Head Todd were all part of the new wave hippie movement of the 90’s. Long stringy hair, tie dye, patchouli oil and flailing around while dancing.

Saw them open for the Stones in the late 90s and they did great. I was not familiar with them at that time. Opening for the Stones would be intimidating for any band.
