Your comment and warning about possible damage to aluminum surfaces from extended contact with oven cleaner was appropriate and reasonable. That said, the brief, scrubbing contact you demonstrated did a perfectly acceptable job. Thanks for the video.

Excellent down to earth video and great idea using using the oven cleaner. At the end of the day carbon is carbon and the oven clearn is spot on. I'm a trained engineer of 25years in industrial equipment and machinery and I think what you have done and how you have done it is spot on. Great video and thank you. Doesn't matter how much experience you have behind you, there is always something new to learn and try!

At a large industrial rail workshop an apprentice once left a 16cyl diesel aluminium engine block in a (very) hot, concentrated caustic bath over a long weekend - it was totally dissolved. However, in this application - no issue at all!!!

2007 combo van 1.3 cdti, money light on, non starter. Bought cheap code reader (£17). Code P0400 EGR flow problems. Given difficulty of access to EGR solenoid, valve and attached water cooler, definitely replace with OE. Having got it off saw was jammed fully open, and had to be tapped shut with a hammer. It looked cleanable, so had a look and found your video. In short, with nothing to lose, I dug out my pretty strong bottle of gel oven cleaner. I kid you not, after half an hour I could have sold the part as brand new. After first brushing with gel, valve actually popped free. By time of third brushing it was smooth and so clean. Having found another video whereby they found out that this model of combo van wont run if EGR valve is stuck open, I chanced to not buy OE and put back the cleaned valve. Started first turn. Amazing, saved me and son (its his van) probably around £500? Its all round the back of engine. Coolant had to be drained, exp bottle off, fuel filter off, turbo pipes off, EGR coolant system off.....Thanks BMAC Cars & Mods.

Like it!! If you don't try, you won't win. I think the biggest problem is access to the EGR valve to remove it. I would love it if all car designers were made to remove and refit these high maintenance parts so that they never design in the nightmare problems of routine maintenance. Some manufactures get this right, but so many just don't.

I have had my SAAB break down because of carbon build up. Was not just in the EGR Valve, but my Swirls flaps also wore their holes so badly, that I needed a new inlet manifold and swirl flaps and so, if your carbon build up is THAT bad, I wqould suggest that you also check your inlet manifold and swirl flaps also because it almost killed my engine as the previous owner obviously saw how bad it had got and did nothing to sort it, just sold it off, and I was left witt a car that cost me 5 grand to buy and after only 3 months, I was left with a car that was in permanent limp mode until I had it rebuilt. Its now smooth as silk mind you and I am in love with her at long last.

A brass wire wheel on a cordless angle grinder and a universal socket can shine up an entire engine bay in 45 mins. Just learn fast what gets cleaned in situ and what really needs to be removed for a bench polish with the grinder clamped in a vice if needs be. Two strips of split hosepipe work great as padded jaws there but make sure the grinder can still draw cooling air over its motor and the motor housing isn't deformed when clamped in position for use as a bench polishing wheel. What need hours to soak and scrub can be mechanically obliterated quite safely with the correct choice of cutting wheel. Don't ignore the pressure washer, the steam cleaner and the ultrasonic or bead/shot/sand blasting options either. Most are cheap and effortless to use if maybe just as time consuming.

If you live in an area where you can get away with it... I find the best cleaning method is had by removing the EGR valve and placing it in the garbage. Block off plate and ecu reflash to get away from it throwing the egr fault code. 555,555km on my pd tdi this week.

@@davidwarren4569 If you do an egr delete, your ecu will throw a egr fault code when you start back up...Your engine lite will come on. Theres no harm done to anything if you continue driving the vehicle if its throwing the fault, but if you want to get permanently rid of the check engine lite, you'll need to take your car or ecu to tdi tuner...someone whose like a franchisee to Malone or Kerma tuning. They plug into your ecu and tell it to not throw a fault code when it recognizes that the egr valve is no longer there. This is also usually a complementary flash if your getting a tune.
@hughmarcus1
@hughmarcus1 5 жыл бұрын
That works fine on older diesels, but the modern ones with electronic EGRs can’t be sorted this way. For some you can still put a blanking plate in & fool the ECU into thinking the EGR is working ( when all it’s doing is opening & closing). There are now vehicles out there with sensors that measure the gas flow through the EGR. They can’t be blanked.

My cel was still on. So, I started driving it only difference in my driving was. Now I drive it using the transmission. I run it up in the rpm’s much higher. About a mile down the road the cel went out on its own. I drove it for a day like that. Then I started driving it just in drive. The light came back on. Then I went back to shifting it myself. For what it's worth. In spite several pro versions of mechanical workshop products. There's 2 household products that have a permanent space in my garage. Oven cleaner and air spray! Both on the cheapest option/brand I can find. AND no, I don't have an oven in the garage, neither an hair salon! LOL 😂 Oven cleaner is excellent for anything involving removal of carbon and grease (ex. heads, valves, EGR). The air spray is for assembling tires! Lubricate the bead during assembly and "glue" it temporarily. Leave no marks, don't make a mess, easily applied (spray) and come out with plain water (rain, wash...) ;-)

Great video thanks. I clean mine about every six months as the valve stuck open once and the car died as it was essentially running on exhaust gas. What I do is unbolt the motor from the back and push the sprung valve in and out to clean the shaft too. What happens is the carbon sticks to the valve stem and stops the spring from closing the valve again. Be careful though and make sure you only press the middle of the valve stem. If you press on the retaining plate the split collects can come off. It's then a fiddly two person job to fit them back on and trapping them back under the plate. Dismantling it like this is the best way to clean it but isn't for the feint hearted. If you lose one of those collets you could be looking at a new valve ££££.

That's "right nice"! Splendid job. I'm the same as you, "if a job's not right; it's wrong". I want to take mine off, just to have a look and give it a clean..... Yes, I'm going to do it!! 👍😁👍

i also used Mr Muscle for my Turbo on my 1.6 tdci focus mk2... the VNT veins were sticky and making a whining noise.. i popped the exhaust off, sprayed Mr Muscle in, and left it for a couple hours.. started the car up, All the junk came out the exhaust, and Whining noise went completely :D

Would this work on my 2.0 diesel x type?
@crpth1

Short answer: Yes! ANY component that's failing due to soot accumulation will benefit from cleaning. EGR's included, as seen in this video. Point being, that if the failure has electronic, pneumatic, etc. causes. Than cleaning will do nothing for it. By far and wide the soot accumulation is the main failure point of EGR's! ;-)

petrol will do it, also there are sprays for EGR valve cleaning and there is also the brake cleaner that will work, but you need to work a little to get it out

It can still happen when you crank it too. More bypass when theres more boost and higher airflow. No way around it, just manage it. Maybe a catch can?

Ok people. I've been a auto technician for Toyota for 24 years now. Their are actual cleaners made for this repair. Don't use oven cleaners use parts cleaner and perform an induction service. Also do a throttle body cleaning using carburetor cleaner and while your at it do an e.f.i flush! E.f.i is an acronym meaning electronic fuel injection! So now you know the proper way to maintain a fuel efficient, smooth running automobile. Don't half ass it!
