Forgot to mention, I got those Infini Model sanding sponges and sticks off NewtypeHQ. Dude, thank you for covering them they've actually turned sanding and polishing into a joy, rather than a hassle. You're the man.

Bruh, love the progression! I'm super hyped to see you begin working with these! They're the katanas of gunpla combat. If your paintjobs are any indication, you'll do great. They blow the Tamiya scriber II and the Tamiya engraver (similarly priced) out of the water. I started using them a couple months ago, and man, they are cleeeaaaan. (It's great how they darken near the tip.) Happy scribing! Be prepared though, your build time is going to triple to finish a kit. Painting is quick. Scribing is... it takes 80 hours to take one limb from bare to scribed, sanded and polished for painting. Copying it to the other limb takes half as long, for clear reasons. Oh by the way, the other tape brand for those curious is HIQ Parts Guiding Tape, both in 3mm width and 6mm. Great stuff as well.

Someone may have said this but polystyrene sheet is the same a ploplay, also easier to find aty hobby shops.
@EvilhomerNZ5 жыл бұрын
Polysytrene sheet is what everyone refers to as 'Pla-plate' because tamiya made a version in the 80's called "Pla-Plate" But they are essentially just styrene sheets. Plasticard, Polysheet, Styrene sheets etc. Many names and available everywhere and at very different price points. :)

While I do like BMC’s chisels, Madworks is a great alternative. Lower cost (still expensive tho, $25 a piece) with a cheaper version ($16 chisels without the diamond hardening) and they are xacto blade style, so the techniques you use for your hobby blades can 100% translate into using them. I recommend buying like a 0.1 and 0.15 Madworks as babysteps, then buying a full set of BMC after getting used to scribing if you want to really commit to the hobby

I got a cheap set on ebay just to start testing a few weeks ago. They came in and they weren't sized properly and the front edge of the chisel wasn't straight/ flat so the panel lines I was making were angled in the plastic even when I was holding the chisel straight. I have a couple of madworks chisels coming in and one from an independent maker of chisels so hopefully those will be better

thanks for the the heads up G, i have bookmarks all over ebay tracking down various sizes of Sujiborido's. I was dreading the postage of so many individual parcels. I have only started scribing recently -- using 'Platz' holly scribers for work less than 0.3mm (airplane builders use them for panel lining wings i believe). I'm thinking i will try wrapping my bmc chisel in surgical tape for some comfort.

Me being west coat based, Newtype seems to be the better for me. They always have tools in stock with a wider selection of tools + more stock on kits. The site loads faster on mobile (the USA Gundam Store sucks on mobile) and the free shipping is only $59 or above (USAGS is $200 or above). To me, if you don’t care about the subscription, USAGS’ only advantage is the rewards, which is still low ($20 off on the next purchase after spending $800). I’ll be supporting papa Gundam from now on! :D

If you want to get into scribing I suggest snipping off the top of a hobby knife and using that to scribe some simple lines to practice the techniques on an old HG or something. It's pretty good for the amount of money you pay for it, which is nearly nothing if you just use an old spare blade. If you then want to really get into it buy some good quality chisels.

Great video man! I have always been interested in trying my hand at making my own panel lines; this was some really good information to help me start in the right direction. Also I can't fucking wait to see what you come up with for the GBWC even thoughI know it probably won't be anytime soon since you said at this stage you're still getting comfortable practising panel lining with plaplate, and I'm sure that won't be the only thing you end up teaching yourself to incorporate into your custom. I don't know if you will see this comment or not but on the off chance you do.. what mobile suit are you gonna use as your base? Or if that hasn't been decided, are you leaning towards a Gundam or something Zeonic? I can't really see you doing something from outside UC but who knows, maybe you'll surprise me; either way I'm looking forward to it. Keep up the good work man, sorry for this long ass comment lmao

These chisels are so fucking expensive though. I really want some as I only use the Tamiya scriber (used it on the small Rx78 water diorama) which is not that great if you want to do the panel lines with differing width. I bought a cheap 1mm chisel for doing small wider details and so far it has worked fine for me but I can tell its going to lose its edge if I use it too much.
@tradfave94745 жыл бұрын
Ive been keen to get these, more specifically the smallest one as it suits my needs the most. By only concern is that while theyre great if youre making your own panel lines, if youre re-scribing lines after sanding to remove a seam line then the sharp, square trench line the chisels create may not match the softer molded ones. If you want an in-depth video on scribing and other tools used, try this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4WrcpafmMh9oMk Unfortunately its a VERY long video and he is VERY long winded. He broke his back doing motorcross stuff or something and got into modelling to re-learn his hand motor skills which only makes it harder. But he definitely covers almost everything, especially tools.
@bourbonbear2185 жыл бұрын
Buy once cry once. Don't buy cheap ass tools no matter what you're doing. Cheap shit will always give you worse quality work and the tool itself won't last long and you'll have to replace it anyway. So buy once, cry once.
