BMW 1 Series - Service Indicator Reset Procedure

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Shed!
In this video I am going to be carrying out a reset of the OBC Service interval indicator on my BMW 1 Series, This process is near identical for E9x models also.

Thanks for the video. Will this also work for an Airbag check light reset. It went on after a tire burst.

No mate, I’m afraid that you will need a diagnostic tool to reset the airbag light! A Carly adapter is highly recommended! 👍🏻

Kev i also have an issue that my dash keeps resetting. The car starts and drives absolutely fine. Its used to happen very occasionally before but now it’s happening all the time whilst driving and parked up stationary

Hi Kev I am new to BMW, just had my car serviced and reset using the buttons in the bottom line you have the overall Mileage then there is a warning triangle then the trip (what is the warning triangle there for, is there still something wrong) thanks for this video very helpful

The warning triangle can mean a number of things, it's usually an indicator of an error of some kind. For example, when my DPF was refusing to ReGen it would pop up or when the window in the drivers door failed, it also did it then too but it does also pop up when service elements are required, it could be that the car needs a brake service or a fluid change, you can cycle through these with the BC button and the jog wheel.

I had random alarm issues on my 7 series and it proved to be a battery problem. The battery was weak and the voltage drop caused the alarm to activate. Sometimes this happened at 3 or 4 in the morning!!! 👍🤓

Kev, my bmw 1 series (59 REG) is booked for a service next week, but the service light on dash has gone from yellow to red. I am worried that this will lead to engine shut down. Do I need to get it reset even though not had service yet? My mechanic is on holiday n I need to use car for next 4 days.

It just means it’s overdue, don’t worry, it’ll be fine for 4 days. No harm done.

Hi. It works pretty fine. I just have a doubt, I changed the oil in May 2022, the oil service was set to be changed in May 2023, I did the reset procedure and it changed to may 2024,is is a problem? Or the car will automatically revert to only one (1) year interval instead of two (2) years??????? How to reset it to one (1) year?!!?

It should be one year bud, it’s either mileage but based upon the manner in which the car is driven (CBS) or annually, whichever comes first.

hi kev ,can you give a update on your vfr mods ,I have a 03 bike and wondered if I can just do the snorkel and flapper mod ,also seen you did the pair mod but talked about putting it back for some reason ,many thanks

You can do anyone of the mods on their own, there is no need to do all of them, each has its own merits in theory, like I said in the video, they are all reversible so give them a go! I am not convinced by the PAIR valve if i'm honest but the snorkel and flapper made the bike sound so much gruntier! especially when the VTEC kicks in! :)

Hi Kevin, i have just had my Vehicle serviced by bmw and they have left the service light on! I cant go back to them due to work and have tried to follow your video, it shows that the service has been reset but the service light still shows when i press the start button, please help

If it still shows the service light then there must be another element of the service that requires resetting, check the brake fluid for example, this will be the problem 👌🏻

Yes buddy. That is the symbol for vehicle check, you will also need to separately reset that one as well, you can individually reset different systems, such as oil service, front brakes, rear brakes, brake fluid etc. For example, I did this service reset but now I’m being told that the brake fluid needs to be reset as it’s been 2 years since it was last changed, hope this helps, if not give me a shout and I’ll try to help.

Kevs Shed hi mate thanks for the quick response 👍🏼 this is what I’ve tried. But still nothing. If I hold the trip button in I don’t get that symbol of the the car and the 2 SS. It goes to this hidden menu with numbers and in German 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe if I take some pictures and send them over it would make more sense.

@@BackStabberJeff Ah right, got you! That means that there is either a fault or a service item outstanding. In the case of this video it was informing me that the brake fluid required changing if I remember correctly! 👍

Trying to find this answer from long now, hoping you can answer this. The check engine lights stay on without engine running but when you start the engine it goes away. Why is that? I'm sure that was not the case during a brand new car and it used to go away like all other lights after checks, I can see same issue with your car in this video. Do you know why is that and the solution to the same?

It should be like that, the ECU isn’t receiving any management signals, if it stays on once running then that’s when there is a problem.

I have similar issue. I had the codes reset by mechanic but the engine lights comes once a day and goes off after I restart the car after driving for like 5-10 mins. Did you got any further to the root cause for your car?

2011 128i. Won’t reset by this method or a scan tool. Reset every other light except the oil!

I was unsuccesful. I did do it when I first got the car. It goes into the hidden menu when I press the reset button.

@@heathersmith9427 I don't know. But personally if it was just a service light for the oil change I would still drive it. Any other light, I would decide depending on what fault light it was. But it's your choice what you want to do. I don't know anything about cars so I decided to get a bicycle instead. And it's better for my health.

@@PresidentDrive yes i actually got it fixed just reset the service using the button which the guy is showing turn the car off give it time it will disappear itself issue with my car was tht i forgot to put the air intake sensor back on 💀😂😂😂😂 that was the light was on i put it back together correctly it disappeared let me know if it helps i got some other tricks too
