Hey man I wanted to say, my first vehicle I purchased is a 95' 325i BMW coupe convertible, I've had it for about a year now at 175k it died out yesterday, this was my first car trouble ever and granted I am an oil tech, I'm not a mechanic. So I watched this video seeing as the indications my car was giving me had seemed like a misfire, and today I tackled the project easy as pie, NOW my spark plugs were not dry, turns out it wasn't the ignition coils and my valve cover gasket is leaking oil into my cylinders, my spark plugs 1,2,3,4,5 were covered in oil. SO I ordered the parts and I'm having it overnight shipped, to hopefully tackle the task tomorrow after cleaning off my spark plugs and coil boots today. And if it weren't for this video I would of had a much, much harder time, very informative, very well made, thank you very much! I loved the camera angle and I also loved how you took the time to actually explain the process of everything as well as give your little tips you had in the beginning, fantastic man!

just swapped out all 6 plugs and 6 new bosch coils. took 1 hour 15 min for entire job including prep time. I had no problems removing any of the coils. They were all in decent shape. some fouling on my spark plugs. (specifically cylinder #2) looks like time to replace valve cover gasket again. my e46 has 210K miles. 5 of 6 were the original coils from 2000. Car was throwing misfires in cylinder 2 and 4. Car was lagging up hills and with heavy engine vibration in 5th gear under load. Now, engine is strong again. Thanks Cody (btw - removing the cabin air filter was way easy) also, use NGK Laser Platinum plugs - BKR6EQUP

I had my spark plugs changed on my '01 325i sedan back in July 2015, just got that "service engine soon" and the shaking/vibrating engine. Common culprit are the coil packs. Cheers for this video saving me some serious $!

Don't drop your plugs down into head you can close up gaps on electrodes causing mis fire use plug socket with rubber boot inside it holds the plug and you can place plugs into head cheers

In all my years of wrenching and building race motors ive never had one close the gap doing it that way. Ive had more issues of that boot getting the socket stuck on difficult plug areas and even the rubber part coming out of the socket causing a big pain in the butt by having to take it back out always seems to happen on the hidden plugs

It might help if you keep the oil cap on to avoid getting dirt or dropping a bolt into the engine.

Look at the cap...and then look at the engine cover... You half to remove the oil cap to remove the cover

that drives me nuts. the cover is right next to the hole. where did he learn? I would have been kicked up the arse if I did that :D at least some tape over the hole. But not only do you risk dropping the cap, you also risk dropping crp into the engine. can't watch. it

BMWs like NGK plugs too, my e36 likes the copper single electrode and my e46, like the one in this video uses the NGK BKR6EQUP Platinum plugs.

pro tip - put the oil cap back on while messing around with anything else. Kinda bothered me seeing it open the whole time. Of course it's very unlikely that anything gets in there that will do some damage, but the odds are a lot more likely with it off than with it on for certain. Barrie does bring a good point as well. It might not close the gap by dropping the plugs in, but again it certainly reduces the odds if you put the plug into the spark plug socket and put it into place that way. these are nit picky things but they are the right way of doing the job.

Looks like it needs new mounting isolators for the SAP!! Also, if 4-5-6 are hard to get at, the cabin filter tray comes out easily with only 4 screws. Nice video!

Yes, I paid £128 to get one coil changed but this included the diagnistics in the first place. However, I've now got recurrance of this, so I suspect another coil has lost its power.

Ooooh! I'm so excited to try this. I noticed you did not remove the cabin filter and all that stuff by the windshield wipers. If that's a shortcut that will work I'll do it. But I just tried to remove the engine cover to see what it is like and it seemed awkward not removing the top. I'm worried about breaking the engine cover.

Bosch is good but ngk is way better, bmw dealers have been changing most of there plugs to ngk, it's recommended but they'll still sell you a Bosch if that's all they have available at the time. Ngk5987 is a good plug for 2006 and up 3 series, not including m3

Hello, good video I had a question, with older style common spark plug and wires your supposed to push the boot of the wire to top of spake plug until it clicks. Now I know the coilpack to coilboot connection clicks but am I supposed to hear the click from the bottom of the coil boot to the top of the spark plug? Also have any suggestions on where to buy coil packs or just the boot?

Hi great video. I was changing plugs on a 01 Bmw 330ci and #4 and #5 plugs don't seem to want to turn to well to come out. It did turn some but it turns with some resist so I stopped trying I did not want to damage the threads the other plugs came out good... Any suggestions Thanks

My last two cylinders are under the plastic part that the windshield washer fluid runs through. Not very machanically inclined but would i have to remove that piece to get to the last two cylinders in the back?

Don't throw spark plugs in any vehicle. All plug's new r pre gapped,throwing in only either damages electrodes or faulty an so forth. Worse Case cylinders misfire ending in a big bang an big hole in ur poickket. Just use needle nose pliers or magnetic too! Of appropriate spark plugs socket.

Cody the Car Guy How would I be able to tell if I have a misfire? When I start the car its rough and I feel like something missteps but warms up and smooths out. But for the first 30 seconds it sounds like crap lol. It's a 99 323is e36. I'm changing all the plugs hoping that helps.

Hey Scotty. On my 2007 Bmw 328i it had a misfire on cylinder 3 I swapped the ignition coil with another and it gave me 3 misfires instead of one. I then ran it and then it gave me a misfire on cylinder 2 and the engine light stayed on I bought a new coil and put it on 2 I reset the code and now I have 3 stored codes. There's no pending codes only stored. What you suggest I do or is everything fine?

You have a short somewhere, could be no ground all the way to the ecu not working , try swapping a coil that you know is working and if it don't work then start tracing wires

printerandscanner the trick is to use two small extensions drop the first one in with the 5/8 socket and then put the second extension in there and then ratchet , i know its a pain but this is what it takes

Ok thanks. I was able to get the 2nd to the last spark plug in the back out with a lot of luck. Now it's about putting the new one in and then trying to get the very last one out way in the back of a tight space.

I Can't even get the plastic cover off my 2011 323i. BMW put half the engine under the cowl. Whats up with that. Cannot get my hand between the cowl and the plastic cover. It looks like the only way to change the plugs on this car is to drop the engine out the bottom.
