A tip. If you have a gearwrench set they come with those spinning 3/8 wheels, put your wheel in your 13mm wrench and your torx socket on it and it gives it just enough clearance to get that back bolt out! Hope that helps someone 👍. Great vid man.

Thanks for this video! Out of all the difficult things in this tutorial I had the most trouble with the two screws that hold the harness bracket to the runners. I ended up losing one screw as it fell into oblivion while putting it all back together. FYI, Harbor freight sells a flex head ratchet that is thin and long with 3/8 and 1/4 inch on either ends that does the job for the back bolt holding the starter.

This is an excellent video with great details. I found that the job was well within range of an average mechanic. It was really helpful to find the white wire for testing. Be careful of the screws that hold the wiring harness to the intake manifold they are hard to get to and the torx heads strip easily. I got the difficult PCV hose off by sticking a screwdriver in from either side to push the tabs.

Thanks for a very well-done and helpful video. It gave me the courage to do the work myself and all worked out fine. Personally, I found the most frustrating part of the work was removing and re-installing the screws holding the wiring interconnect harness below the manifold. Partly, this was because I didn't have tools that worked well in that close area. So, I decided to remove the throttle body (4 easy bolts) to improve access to (and being able to see) the screws. A bonus was that the breather hose that you said was the hardest to disconnect - the one sitting in the middle of the curved manifold tubes - became accessible from the side and, so, was much easier to grab and disconnect with the fingers. The whole thing took me about 3 hours yesterday and 2+ today. If I had to do it again I guess it would still take 4 hours. Again, many thanks to Nicoya.

Finally a youtube video that gives proper advice on tools to use for this job! The only recommendation I have is to get the craftsman swivel ratchet with the bent handle like the snap-on ratchet he shows first, model # 44835. Never use an 11mm on an E14 or 10mm on E12, especially in such a tight situation. Stripping this bolt will guarantee a VERY BAD day.
@TakamiWoodshop6 жыл бұрын
Big thanks to Nicoya - this is the best guide I've found. For other people who come after me. There is a gotcha - some models have a different crankcase vent system from the one shown in this vid. Instead of just a hose coming out there is a large padded box kind of thing that fills the whole area between the starter and the top of the intake manifold. I wasn't able to figure out how to get it off as it is attached to the manifold and has additional hoses going down which have their own clips etc. I thusly had to choose the more difficult "adventurous" option - which actually wasn't that tricky. This meant that I didn't need to take off a lot of plugs and stuff on the air filter side. Just a heads up for other people who follow this excellent guide.

Great video man! I am having an issue with my 2006 330i. No crank no start. I tested the battery at autozone and it’s good still. Then I used a voltmeter like you showed in the video and it’s showing 11.5 V. I bought a new starter but I don’t want to move forward with the repair until I know that’s what it is. A 1 V drop is concerning to me. I removed the green clip and used a copper wire to touch the B post to the bottom of the green clip where the solenoid wire is so it could receive the 12.5V and the starter just clicks really loud and nothing else. Do you think this is the starter or should I check the CAS module as well?

For anyone who is willing to take on this task - it's not that hard. No special tools are required to get to the starter. BUT, my tip to you (from my personal experience) go and buy this this ratchet from Harbor Freight (3/8 In. Drive T-Bar With Flexible Ratchet ), it worked like a charm after unsuccessful tries with flex-head ratchet. This tool was recommended by another mechanic in one of the e90 starter replacement videos. Save yourself some time with a good preparation. Bolts on my 2009 335i Xdrive were E12, not E14 but it seems to vary by model/year, be ready with both sockets. Good luck!

Important note: The torque specs presented in this video for the starter bolts are not 100% correct. The rest of the video is great, but I partiallly snapped a bolt head off following the instructions here. The proper torque is 20Nm plus 180 degrees for the long bolt (correct in the video) and 20Nm plus 90 degrees for the short bolt (not so much). Luckily in my case it snapped in such a way that I can't get a socket back on it but the bolt still holds, but it's gonna be that much harder if I ever need to change the starter again. I was about to blame NAPA for selling me shoddy bolts, but I looked it up in the manual and 90 degrees is what's listed there.
@tomtamshen72774 жыл бұрын
How long did it take you to do starter and put back together?
@kevinandrewlipscomb919Ай бұрын
@michaelCappiello, you're exactly right about the documented torque instructions for the starter mounting bolts, however, I followed those instructions and in the process, snapped off the top of the long bolt's head trying to give it that extra 180 deg. (Thank goodness it was the easy-to-extract long bolt. I just left it for now.) Either stage 2 of the torque instructions (the extra 180 deg turn) is a poor recommendation from BMW, or the bolts that ECS Tuning provided with the Bosch starter are substandard. You might try ordering BMW OEM bolts separately, or you might try quitting after accomplishing the stage 1 torque (the 20Nm).

The PVC hose can also be unplugged from the back of the valve cover and you can pull it al out without uncliping the two from the bottom of the intake.

Great video. I struggled with a few things. My bolts for the starter were E16 not E14, it took me a bit too long to figure this out… frustrating. That said, the replacement stretch bolts from ECS were E14. Also, I couldn’t get the front (shorter) bolt off by just moving the intake out of the way, the intake had to be completely removed to get enough room to finally break it free, it was too tight! Also, the wiring harness screws underneath are at an angle and hard to see, I needed a size reference for the Torx (It ended up being T27, for mine), I had to peer at the rear one underneath the throttle body with an LED light placed just right. I’m not sure how or if I will get the rear screw back in. All the connectors were much more difficult than shown in the video to remove. Large hose pliers work pretty well for all of the pinch-to-remove hoses. Lots of blood from sharp plastic, metal crap, bruises and cussing. It usually takes me an hour or two to change a starter. I may finish this weekend, well we’ll see.

The main challenge I had was disconnecting the hose connectors, since they are so fragile. After replacing it today the car starts but cranks for more time (2-3 seconds) than it should. Not sure why that is the case, when none of the fuel lines were taken apart at all. The other issue is much more severe where the transmission will not shift from 1st gear now. Never had this issue before so I'm wondering if someone would be able to guide me here. Im thinking since I disconnected multiple connectors, could there be one that would cause this issue?

@InitechAuto Жыл бұрын
Not sure what part are you referring to. It must’ve been something that you removed. But here’s what I found. Bracket that holds the fuel injector into the cylinder head on N54 and N54T engines

My 2006 325i has a Maroon connector where your green one is in the junction box, and the bigger white wire was on the right-hand side instead of left. I did get 12 volts with a meter when pressing the ignition however my test light never lit up (not sure if it was all the way in even though I tried multiple times). How did you find out which wire to test (schematic)? Update: I made a wire (4 in copper wire stripped at both ends) to probe and then attached my test light to it and that worked. Make sure you have a good ground. For 2006 325i the starter wire is in the maroon plug (same location as shown in video), however, the thicker white wire is on the top right not left.

The wiring schematic I used came from the BMW service manual by Bentley Publishers.

@@InitechAuto Did the job, however on 2006 325i the manifold is different, I would highly recommend for anyone with the 06 325i to do the quick job. As much as I wanted to take off the manifold I couldn't, do the hoses you would have to take off in the back. Your video however did help me immensely, thank you.

that back bolt, you can use a 3/8ths, yes 3/8ths gearwrench, and you can ratchet it too

great video. it is helping right now to try to replace my starter and crankshaft position sensor. Nicoya , did you remove the tube at the back of the manifold near the fire wall or is that not necessary? I have all the bolts and other connectors off except the tricky one you used the spark plug tool on
@InitechAuto4 жыл бұрын
If you are completely removing the manifold then you have to disconnect everything. If not, just pull the manifold back enough to give you clearance to remove the starter.

I have opened for my ECU box of 320i e90. I can't find the green color plug that was tested in this vdo. Could you please recommend for my starter testing? What is plug color in my e90,320i to supply electrical to starter ? Thank you for your kind support.

Great video! It helped me get the starter of a 2007 328i! One note, I didn't have to remove the strut bars completely. I just loosened one end of the driver's side strut bar. Also, just curious, what tool did you use to measure the torque you applied to the starter bolts? Thanks
@InitechAuto5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Salguero On the starter bolts I did not use a torque wrench. I just tightened them just lightly snug. Then turned them 180 degrees and that’s it!

@@InitechAuto Great thanks! I noticed you mentioned tightening them up snugly but wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something. I was afraid that I was going to have to find a way to get a torque wrench between the firewall and the engine block. Glad I dont have to do that!

Great video, putting mine back together today, how did you connect the lower CCV hose that runs to the oil pan? Did you connect it from underneath, by removing the metal cover? Or from up top, I cannot get it connected, maybe I am not positioning the intake just right, or there is a method I have not seen?
@InitechAuto2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly. I did it from the top. While the manifold was loose.

Can you disclose the manufacturer of the "spark plug pliers" (seen at the 21:02 minute of the video) and where it can be purchased? I have at times separated the wire from connector inside the boot when removing a spark plug wire. And thanks!

There are several on the market now. Here is one on Amazon www.amazon.com/MAG-MATE-PLS100-Angle-Spark-Pliers/dp/B019Z09JHU/ref=sr_1_2?crid=F4C7921GOHVE&dchild=1&keywords=spark+plug+wire+puller&qid=1588031911&sprefix=spark+plug+wire%2Caps%2C208&sr=8-2 The one in the video is from Snap-on tools. Hi @Nicoya. Very nice video. I followed exactly how you detailed but I accidentally cracked the “Evaporation Hose” and I broke the rear hose under the manifold (1 of the two that you squeeze and work to get off. Any idea where I can find diagrams helping me figure out what i need to order?

Nicoya Ok. That suck. Hey I just ran into another problem. There is one last wire connection on the lower back of the manifold. Looks like 3 fittings side by side with 1-2 wires on each. Do you know how that comes out? I have a 2006 325i.
