Please people do this from the top.....I know it seems daunting to pull the intake but its really not, then everything is really easy to access. no jack, no lowering of transmission, no risk of dropping a car on yourself or the frustrations of try to reach up into that tiny space. and honestly its much faster. great job on the video and your tenacity is to be admired.

Just did it on an e82. Took the manifold out and did it from the top. Back bolt for the starter was tough but with a flatter flex head ratchet, I got it no problem with the intake completely out. Tried it with the intake just off but not fully removed. Pushed out of the way, and no…fully remove the intake manifold, and it’s pretty darn easy! I’m very mechanically inclined but never did this project before. Took me 4 hours or so, but that wasn’t me working super diligently. Took my time, took some beer breaks. Also tested my starter at the white junction box. Tested it with a multimeter. Told me we had proper power all through the system to that point, which only left the white wire running power to the starter. Not a fan of the tapping the starter method to diagnose it. Multimeter is a must on electrical issues!

The BMW E46 6-cylinder engine starter motor is located on the left side of the engine below the intake manifold. It is not the easiest part to access on your BMW and can be replaced a few different ways. On most rear wheel drive manual transmission models, you can access the starter from below. On rear wheel drive automatic transmission models, you can access it from below but there limited workspace. On all-wheel drive models, the sub frame has to be lowered to access the starter from below, so I prefer to pull the intake manifold . You should be aware that in all 6-cylinder models you can pull the intake manifold out of the way to replace the starter. You have much better access and can avoid lying on your back for hours. Great video , well appreciated the effort you took. keep up the great work.

At 19:06 we can tell that someone had removed the starter before and didn't bolt the cable hanger with the loop using the starter outer bolt. This is why it seems these two E12 bolts are not too hard to loosen. You should use a 24" long 1/2" externsion to remove these bolts working at the back of the tranny, not at the left side as you did.
