Excellent video - very helpful. I was able repair my EGR valve after watching this. The motor housing has 5 point security torx which must have a non- standard centre pin as it was too large to fit my torx bits. Ended up cutting a slot in them and replacing with regular M4x20mm bolts. The cogs and valve arm were badly clogged up but after cleaning everything is working as it should.

@@bmwsolutions7880 thank you, that's some amazing stuff. I've seen somewhere where people have had good results using pipe cleaning brushes and carb cleaner and a regular vacuum cleaner for the loose carbon for the intake valves, but I have no clue about the correct brush hardness and how to crank the engine to shut certain cylinder valves in order to brush them. I suppose the plastic manifold itself can be put in a container and even submerged and cleaned way easier than the intake valves. Thanks again for the great content!

Hi, buying a new egr valve is an option of course👍 especially, if you don't want to open it and get your hands dirty. Hi AAron, thanks for the excellent video which gave me the condfidence to attempt this cleaning exercise myself. My car is actually an F11, B47, 2016 520D. I have managed to get the valve out but I can't separate the 2 parts of it for the cleaning. I have several types of keys and bits that are supposed to fit tamper-proof, Torx security screws but none of them fit. It looks to me as though the pin in the centre of the screws is a larger than the holes in my keys. Maybe a BMW special tool? Did you have a similar experience ? I would be grateful for any further advice you can provide. What worked for you and where did you acquire the right tool? Thanks in advance

Hi Gary, I'm glad I've been helpful. I remember having the same problem with screws on the egr valve, I think I already mention that in the video. You don't need a bmw special tools, just find a 5 point torx driver. If you cant, try to take them off and replace with ordinary torx screws which is what I did. I ordered some of the torx drivers from ebay and some from my local too shop. They're very cheap to buy and can be used in some other applications if they don't fit your egr valve. All the best 👍

@bmwsolutions78802 жыл бұрын
You can do it without ista, It's just a recommendation. However, when you place it back into the housing you need to align it very carefully and tighten the screws without losing that alignment, otherwise you can bend or even brake the egr tip or some other moving parts inside the valve which results in buying a new egr valve. As I said in the video,first time I did this without the activation but I had to pay great attention during work. Ista makes things much easier. All the best 👍

Thanks for your comment 👍 The software is called Ista Rheingold. I bought it online on ebay, they also installed it remotely on my laptop. Generally price is around £60-70. As for the error codes, I think there's a problem with your assembly because limp mode shouldn't happen after installation. I'd check the assembly again, including connections. However, it's difficult to say much without a scan. Watch my video on how to use ista kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHSzfnyEg71nqMk There's also a quick and relatively cheap option to scan your car. Another wonder of mine, as I managed to get to similar EGR valve, but on transversal engine as X1 has.. I would like to know if it necessary to remove coolant hoses as I probably can get to the mechanism inside without disconnecting the hoses.. is there any coolant running inside the case where the mechanism sits/runs..? Of course what not many might not be aware that the clamps of coolant hoses are yo be used once. After we remove them we either have to buy new clamps from dealer and buy dedicated tool for it or buy the screwing type like yours.. 12-14mm diameter which I have already. So, disconnecting the hoses does or does not effect (spill out) unscrewing the cover of the mechanism?
@bmwsolutions78802 жыл бұрын
Feom my experience, there wasn't any coolant inside the egr valve. Little bit of coolant came out of the hose, not the valve. However, it will be difficult to clean ot without taking out the hoses. You may have a hard time and a lot of back ache.

So The setting of the valve to open 20% for install, how can this be done with the man on a drive with no lap top software and lead?
@brarautorepairs2 күн бұрын
The service process requires the EGR valve to be retracted when it is removed or installed. This is to prevent it from being damaged during installation and removal. My experience has been that you don't have to use ISTA+ to retract it however it can get jammed with carbon. When you go to remove it, it will require force which can damage the valve. For this reason, I do not recommend cleaning the unit unless you have an issue with it. Even then, it is recommended to replace it. I tried cleaning these units and frankly they won't work properly. These are supposed to cycle (open/close) fast and the real time data shows a slow cycle on an old unit. The new unit is able to cycle quickly when there is a change in engine load.

Does brake cleaner or egr cleaner damage the rubber seals?
@ssss-df5qz10 ай бұрын
brake cleaner can damage rubber yes. Although saying that, if you have a seal you want to reuse and it is oily - I always use brake cleaner to quickly clean it then dry it and use silicone grease before refitting. I feel it's like any oil or solvent with rubber items - if it is in contact for a long period it will crack and damage the seal. If it's 10 seconds, I seriously doubt it will have any effect. EGR cleaner I'm not sure. I don't believe they have any rubber seals within the mechanical part of the valve that is in the high temp zone. Pretty sure the EGR shaft seal is a brass/bronze bushing with a tight tolerance to stop gases entering the electronics.

I understand now 👍 In most cases, cleaning the egr valve deletes many error codes, so I suggest you start with cleaning first. Also consider cleaning the egr cooler which holds crazy amount of soot and gunky residue inside. The mechanic should be able to see the condition of these components while cleaning. If you can, you also stay there and watch him and ask about the condition. After the cleaning, all you need to do is clear the error codes and take a drive for a few miles and see if same codes show up again. If don't, your problem is solved. If do, you need to check the error codes again and let me know. And remember this time you will have a clean egr and egr cooler that will serve you at least 40000-60000 miles without problem. You can buy a new egr valve but I would clean it and see the condition first.

To explain it better, is like I press "Start Engine", the engine starts and I feel a little tremble for 1 second, and when I stop the engine, I feel a tremble for 1.5 - 2 seconds. I tested other cars like mine and is not like this, they are smooth and fine. Have any ideea what it can be?

Hi there, just to clarify that cleaning egr valve doesn't give you more horse power. It's a preventative service. You lose power and run into problems if egr valve gets blocked. As for your problem, looks like something is not assembled properly after cleaning the valve, this can be the steel gasket, escape gas pipe on the valve or anything else you disassembled during this work. I suggest, you check everything you did on your car and carry out a final scan on Ista. I've done this cleaning twice and never had any problems. Keep us updated, all the best 👍

Can this cause coolant leak into the exhaust ?
@bmwsolutions78802 жыл бұрын
If you put a cloth over the egr cooler like I did, coolant wouldn't go into other parts. It was only a few drops anyway so it wouldn't cause any issues even if does go into exhaust.

Good video. Thank you. However, you have to take into account that everytime you unscrew the Motor housing from the aluminium housing (preassembled housing), you are "losing" the right programming of the valve (offset position) which later on could cause a car alarm due to the EGR valve position sensor NOK...

Hi, thank you for your comment. Long story short, I did this whole cleaning process twice (first one without ista activation) over the past 4 years and didn't have any problems so far. I'm sure what you indicate is partly correct but in worst case scenario, I can buy a brand new egr valve at £130 and replace it. My point is, if we don't try to help ourselves and each other, dealerships and mechanics will keep ripping off us all. Finally, if or when I notice any of the work i carry out don't make sense or doesn't reflect the real life experience, I delete or replace the video I published here (I deleted 1 video and replaced 1 other video already due to not giving consistent information to people). Thanks for your contribution again, all the best 👍

I see your point but I’m not so sure about that. The mechanical spring returns the valve to a default position when it is clean and fully functioning, so as long as the motor / actuator drive pinion isn’t moved, then it should be fine.

Hi Albert, thanks very much👍 I shared the procedure in the video, 13.48 min. shows the steps. As for the bleeding procedure, I replaced the entire coolant and did bleeding twice but couldn't record it as it was very messy process wanted to focus on egr video. 🤠

Maybe if you add some text to mention it it can help :) For the coolant its normaly easy on the B engin, the electrical bleeding work like charme

@@bmwsolutions7880 i have a question, before installing the new egr valve you need to retract it by 20% but once the egr valve is placed and instaled, do you need to release it to 0% or you just instal it retracted by 20% and leave it once you are done ? thanks

Hi, once you install it you need to go on ista software and click continue which brings the egr back to normal working position.

Hi, As I said in the video, it is optional to use the software. I would definitely use it if I had the software. If you don't have it, you need to be careful when placing it in the housing.

@bmwsolutions7880 Жыл бұрын
Carly can do simple things like reading and clearing error codes and some service functions. Ista is a dealer level native BMW software that shows every detail and how to solve them with pics, videos and clear guidance. So I definitely recommend ista if you can learn how to use it. It's also free and can be used on any BMW.

Hi, i tried to clean my egr valve today. After putting it back to place, my car starts its shacking and then the car turn off. Is it because the egr valve is maybe broken. I have the fault codes 255b00 and 272f00. Can you please help. Thanks

Hi, i can try to help you if you give me some info. what car do you have? How did you clean your egr and put it back? Where do those error codes come from?
@bekir283 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply, The car is a f34 318 150hp b47 engine. I took it out, but since i didnt had an 5star torx i only cleaned the valve and then put it back in place. I have by accident broke the "13718479957 Pipe" black very fragile besides the egr valve. I temporary ducktaped it. Maybe this is causing the problem. When i start the car its shaling and the rpm is not stabe and then after 10sec the car is stopping. Is the shaking an stopping of the car a sign of not working egr valve?
@bmwsolutions78803 жыл бұрын
I suggest you take out the egr valve and check that the valve tip is not broken. If it's not broken, probably the broken pipe is the problem.
@bekir283 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, I fixed the problem the egr was stuck in open position and this was causing the shaking and shutting the car off. I brought an new egr valve and put it on place and the car is back to normal. Thank you really for your time and help! Very appreciated.

EGR 11718594492 VS EGR 11718513132 I need to change EGR on my F34 318dGT from 2017 so I'm wondering is there any difference in these two EGR valves. Both are OEM parts but the first one (11718594492) is like half the price of the second one (11718513132). It says that both of them could fit into my car, but I would like to see if any of you have any experience with changing it and which one you got.

Thanks for informative video. I have 2016 UK reg f30 with B47. Could you please let me know the part number of the gasket. Also my breather pipe was so brittle that is broke to 3 pieces. This pipe part number I think is 13717823517 with one end right angled. I am wondering if I can fit straight angled 13717803842
@bmwsolutions78802 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome 👍 I tried to find the part number in my ebay purchase but couldn't, sorry. I normally buy parts on ebay without part numbers, sellers are very helpful and they can confirm if the part fits your car. As for the pipe, again I can't recommend something I haven't tried or done on my car 😖

Don't know about the other question but part number 11718597652 is a set of 3 gaskets for EGR system, one of which is the one you need.
