This video is incredibly helpful! I no longer feel like changing my battery would be a problem.

Thanks man 👍. Yep, for the price of having a shop or BMW dealer register the battery just once (even if you buy the battery from an auto parts store), the software and cable can be purchased and then it’s available for future battery changes as well as diagnosing the car for any issues that might come up. All the best ! Steve

Did you use AGM battery? Or same spec as the original? Thanks
@StevesDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hello, yes…in order to just register the battery with INPA it has to be the same type (AGM) and specs (amps, CCA) as the OE battery. You can change out to a battery with different specs, but it requires coding software to change the settings so the Intelligent Battery System won’t damage it.

@StevesDIYs I have INPA software. Do you know exact oem AGM for 2005 645ci?
@StevesDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@thewhitestar206 hey again, I looked up your year and make on RealOEM BMW and it looks like yours had two options…either a 92Ah (6121235381) or a 110Ah (61212357334). Here’s the notes indicated to check which battery your specific VIN has if you also have ISTA as well as INPA: “Standard batteries can always be replaced by AGM batteries with the same specifications. Following either type of replacement, the vehicle registration process in ISTA/P must be supplemented by a vehicle coding procedure, which is carried out as follows: ---------------------------------------- Read out battery size and registration from onboard electrical system: ISTA->Service functions->Body->Voltage supply->Register_battery replacement->Test plan” I have not actually looked at the size coded into any of mine prior to registering with the above ISTA path as I’ve always just changed them based on which part number was on the original, but if you do have ISTA as well and try the above to obtain the currently registered battery let me know hows it goes 👍. Hope this helps a bit and all the best ! Steve

Hello. I hope all is well! Any idea why “Power Management” is not displayed as an option in INPA? Your help is greatly appreciated!
@StevesDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hey ! Thanks…hope all it well with you and yours as well 👍. It seems that some versions of INPA have the power management function in different menus so it’s sometimes hard to find. Occasionally I have to select a different engine than what’s actually in the car to get to a specific function that should have been there, but was somehow left off that particular INPA revision. If you also have the ISTA software, it will do the battery registration if you are unable to find it in INPA. I haven’t used it to reset one since INPA makes it easy (if the function is listed), but the procedure lists out as this: Following replacement, the vehicle registration process in ISTA/P must be supplemented by a vehicle coding procedure, which is carried out as follows: ---------------------------------------- Read out battery size and registration from onboard electrical system: ISTA->Service functions->Body->Voltage supply->Register_battery replacement->Test plan” Hope this helps a bit and all the best ! @@StevesDIYs thanks so much! I looked at your other comment and saw you mentioned doing the process from RealOEM. I did it and got it registered my new battery using (ISTA). I have a 2004 645ci (E63). My IBS issue still remains (even after a new replacement) lol. I believe it’s the alternator, or wiring to DME (I also have a “Communication with Alternator” error code.

Click on Engine and then click on your engine type. Once the screen opens up click IBS - Power Management. After click on either "exchange" or "b replace". Those were the options i got for my E70. As the others have said, check various engine types.

Thanks man 👍. The car’s Battery monitoring system changes how the car charges the battery as it gets older (it charges it a bit harder as it gets weaker and also remembers that it was getting older so it turns the radio off quicker if you have the ignition off and are playing the radio it seems). I never read anything that says it will hurt the car if not re-registered, but the new battery’s life might be shortened due to the incorrect charging level. I had to replace my battery one time when I was away from home years ago and drove it for several weeks before registering it. It didn’t seem to bother anything and the battery still lasted over 3 years. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve.

How do you check in the software what your current battery settings are?
@StevesDIYs11 ай бұрын
Hello, I’m not sure if INPA will tell you the current settings for the battery, but ISTA should be able to if you have that software from the downloads for the communication cable. ISTA is a bit more complicated to use though.

how about when you need to change values?
@StevesDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hello, to swap to a different battery rating you would need to have a coding software (like NCS Expert) to change the vehicle coding. It’s more in depth as you need to download the cars program then modify the battery codes and then reload it into the car.

How to setup icom with INPA
@StevesDIYs2 жыл бұрын
Hey man ! I believe the ICOM interface uses ISTA or ISTA+ versus INPA (I may be wrong though). ISTA has many more features than INPA (I have both on the PC), but I mainly use INPA as it is much faster to initialize and runs the simple diagnostics. I use ISTA on my e63 M6 since it can purge the vanos, recalibrate the SMG clutch as well as diagnose the systems. If you use ISTA, be sure to connect a battery charger to the battery as it demands a lot of power to run the diagnostics if the car is not running. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve

Hi im I have the same car and I just changed the starter had to disconnect the battery now having a problem with the ews can you help reset it
@StevesDIYs4 жыл бұрын
alex infanzon , hey man ! So does it just crank and crank now, but not fire like the immobilizer is preventing fuel? It seems odd that just disconnecting the battery would cause the car to disable (I’ve disconnected mine for several days while working on things many times and it has never had an issue remembering it’s coding and staying in sequence to the rolling key code). If it doesn’t do anything when the fob is put in the ignition and the start button is pushed (no cranking ) it might be that the starter relay is not pulling down (gone bad or a fuse is blown). INPA (the software) will let you resync the DME to the immobilizer, but it is a bit tricky and requires you to select a different model vehicle from the menu that has the function enabled, then go back to the e6x series and sync the DME immediately after.

@@StevesDIYs I just got the car the guy that sold it to me just told me that the starter was bad the car didn't crank so I changed it and now it does i put my scanner and it gave me the ews code I dont know what caused the ews to engage but this is kicking my ass lol 😅

@StevesDIYs4 жыл бұрын
alex infanzon , I know the feeling, lol. I thought I bricked my car when I reset the body control module due to a convertible top issue and it got the other modules out of sync and all it would do was crank (thus me knowing INPA will resync them, lol). I’ll pop my PC open and see if I can remember where I found the resync for the other car model that I had to use and let you know if I can find it 👍. Might take me a day or so if that’s all right.

I thought that if it’s the same size and cranking amps that you would t have to
@StevesDIYs4 жыл бұрын
BAims , if you changeout to the same size, amp hours, and cranking amps you only need to register it (like the vid using INPA or similar). If you swap to a different rated battery you actually have to go into the battery settings using a coding program or the car will ruin the new battery by over/under charging it. The registration actually resets the charging rate that the car does...if it’s not registered the car thinks it still has the old battery so it charges harder. I don’t think it hurts the car, but seems to shorten the battery life some by charging it too harshly.

BAims , I’ve always used INPA and ISTA on my cars since it covers most all of the interactions needed to really dig deep into an issue (like looking at the individual cylinder spark quality to find intermittent coil problems). For the 650i convertible, INPA is really good for being able to see each Hall effect sensor activate. The only thing I don’t like is that the menus and error codes are half English / half German so I end up on google translate quite frequently, lol. Thanks and same to you for your BMWs as well 👍

How do you reprogram used ecu on e60
@StevesDIYs3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had to reprogram one yet, but I believe it is done with the NCSExpert software. I’ve resynched the modules with INPA, but that’s much less risky than reprogramming as I’ve heard stories of messing up the program and then having to take it to BMW to be programmed (for a high fee of course). Sorry I couldn’t help, Steve
